Abstract: purpose: to analyze the results obtained with a new phacoemulsification teaching method in the specialization course of hospital de olhos do paraná. methods: a retrospective study evaluated the results of a "reversal" method used in the cbo/alcon teaching program at the hospital de olhos do paraná. the method is based on the student progression through five checkpoints starting from the end of the surgery towards the beginning and analysis of intra- and postoperative complications at each one of the checkpoints. results: of 84 operated eyes, 77 (91.67%) presented final visual acuity of 20/40 or better. among the complications, the main one was the posterior capsular rupture and occurred in 11 (13.09%) of 13 (15.48%) eyes with complications. conclusion: the "reversal" teatching method used in the cbo/alcon teaching program is appropriate to the student, his instructor, as well as to the patient.
Negócio, política, ciência e vice-versa: uma história institucional do jornalismo médico brasileiro entre 1827 e 1843
Ferreira, Luiz Otávio;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702004000400005
Abstract: this analysis of brazil's first medical newspapers - propagador das ciências médicas (1827-28); semanário de saúde pública (1831-33); diário de saúde (1835-36); revista médica fluminense (1835-41); revista médica brasileira (1841-43) - shows how rio de janeiro's socio-cultural context made it possible for this type of publication to emerge within the city's dynamic, troubled environment of the 1820s and 30s. i argue that the distinguishing feature of brazil's early medical journalism was a symbiosis between business (local publishing houses' commercial interests), politics (struggles for political hegemony during the consolidation of the imperial state), and science (the movement to institutionalize medicine and affirm it as a science).
Os periódicos médicos e a inven??o de uma agenda sanitária para o Brasil (1827-43)
Ferreira, Luiz Otávio;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701999000300006
Abstract: in this contribution to the debate on the institutionalization of medicine in brazil, special focus is placed on the role that the first brazilian medical periodicals played in endeavoring to establish and broaden the medical audience. the success of these efforts meant that physicians belonging to rio de janeiro?s sociedade de medicina and, later, to the academia imperial de medicina needed to make scientific periodicals an effective means of exchange among members of rio de janeiro?s cultured elite. the attention devoted by these periodicals to the nation?s sanitary issues underscores the importance of the hygienist discourse, viewed as the prime way to bring medicine into public life.
O uso energético da madeira
Brito, José Otávio;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142007000100015
Abstract: in the last ten years, an important restoration of wood consumption for energy production purposes in brazil has been taking place, going against a decline tendency initiated in the mid 1900s. for that reason, energy production still represents the greatest demand of wood for a determined application: 61% of the total volume. however, there is still a lot to conquer in the definition and implantation of pragmatic actions for the valorization of this practice in the country. in this paper, quantitative aspects of this application will be discussed, as well as its strategic scope and the request for the definition of actions and plans. long-felt needs for the consolidation of this important and fundamental application of wood that haven?t been fulfilled are also pointed out, considering the current debate in which the use of fossil energy sources is being challenged.
A Model of the Growth of Copper Selenide Thin Films Controlled by Diffusion and Chemical Reaction
Bottecchia, Otávio Luiz;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50531998000600002
Abstract: a model of the growth of thin films of copper selenides is proposed. a mathematical equation that describes the kinetics of the growth is derived. simulated results and a discussion on the results of the model are presented. a fitting procedure of literature data with the derived equation is carried out. the diffusion coefficient of copper(i) ions in copper selenide is roughly estimated.
Políticos, representa??o política e recursos públicos
Bezerra, Marcos Otávio;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832001000100008
Abstract: having as a starting point that the "politics" constitutes a relational universe where the "local" and the "national" are social planos (fields?) on which certain relations objectify themselves, and not autonomy spheres which are comprehensive in themselves, this article tries to demonstrate that we can understand certain political practices much better if we don't get stuck in one of these poles and to the presuppositions which they are articulated to them, of oppositions like this one between the local and the national. para isso (so / having this intent) , it takes the elaboration and execution steps of the annual federal budget law as a privileged moment of the politics exercise that allows to exam some of the relations and conceptions that link the politics professionals situated in the different spaces of political authority (in the city and the country). in this analysis, i follow two argumentation lines: 1) that the interests around the federal recourses, and the practices and conceptions associated to them, are subscribed in a complex system of mutual and asymmetric relations and dependencies, that is constituted, among others, by municipal leaders, parliamentary and governmental authorities and private agents; and 2) that the action of these last agents leads to a specific conception of political representation.
Coreografias de evas?o: segrega??o e sociabilidade entre os jovens do break dance das favelas da Maré
Etnográfica , 2012,
Abstract: in maré, a neighbourhood of rio de janeiro composed of sixteen slums (favelas), the constant confrontations between drug deal-ing groups limit, or sometimes prevent, the free circulation of people in the streets. such conflicts impose territorial divisions and force residents, especially younger ones, to avoid areas dominated by groups that are hostile to the one ruling the area where they live. however, a group of young breakdancers (style of dance evolved as a part of hip hop culture) has been able to breach this segregation dynamic; they are changing not only their own way of living the neighbourhood but also the way society sees people who live in favelas. breakdancing enables them to extend their friendship networks beyond the geographical limits imposed by drug dealing activities, thus allowing them to conquer the legitimacy required to circulate around the entire neighbourhood. simultaneously, they have started to go to other city neighbourhoods, getting in touch with young people from different origins and social classes. in this process, the “breaking style” becomes an instrument to access the city and an informal arena that subverts the category “favelado” (slum dweller), enabling young people to forge positive and affirmative identities.
Os novos sentidos da interdisciplinaridade
Velho, Otávio;
Mana , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132010000100009
Abstract: this paper suggests that from the mid 20th century onwards a new paradigm umbilically associated with interdisciplinarity began to gestate within the scientific field. it explores the consequences of the birth of this paradigm for the social sciences and for scientific and technological activities in brazil, as well as its political implications and its effect on our present-day common sense.
Velho, Otávio;
Mana , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132001000200005
Abstract: gregory bateson?s most important book, steps to an ecology of mind, was finally re-edited in 2000. in the same year, tim ingold?s book, the perception of the environment, which takes up many of bateson?s preocupations, was released. this essay proposes that these two events represent important steps towards an "ecological paradigm", which attempts to answer some of anthropology?s dilemas, and open up perspectives for interdisciplinary dialogue on new terms.
Globaliza??o: antropologia e religi?o
Velho, Otávio;
Mana , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93131997000100005
Abstract: this article approaches the theme of globalization through a framework of anthropological references, especially the notion of myth. meanwhile, it explores the relations between globalization as perspective and globalization as myth (as opposed to globalization as object), with a "spirit of epoch" manifested transversally in various domains, both in forms of knowledge and social practices in general. it focuses on the field of religiosity and anthropological practice itself as points of entry for capturing this "spirit of epoch".
