Antimicrobial capacity of Aloe vera and propolis dentifrice against Streptococcus mutans strains in toothbrushes: an in vitro study

Abstract: objectives: this study evaluated in vitro the efficiency of aloe vera and propolis dentifrice on reducing the contamination of toothbrush bristles by a standard strain of streptococcus mutans (atcc 25175; sm), after toothbrushing. material and methods: fifteen sterile toothbrushes were randomly divided into 5 toothbrushing groups: i (negative control): without dentifrice; ii: with fluoridated dentifrice; iii: with triclosan and gantrez dentifrice; iv (positive control): without dentifrice and irrigation with 10 ml of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate; v: with aloe vera and propolis dentifrice. in each group, 1 sterile bovine tooth was brushed for 1 min, where the toothbrush bristles were contaminated with 25 μl of sm. after toothbrushing, the bristles were stored in individual test tubes with 3 ml of bhi under anaerobiosis of 37°c for 48 h. then, they were seeded with sterile swab in triplicate in the mitis salivarius - bacitracin culture medium. the samples were kept under anaerobiosis of 37°c for 48 h. scores were used to count the number of colony forming units (cfu). the results were submitted to the mann-whitney statistical test at 5% significance level. results: there was statistically significant difference (p<0.05) for the reduction of bristle contamination comparing groups ii, iii, iv and v to group i. conclusions: it may be stated that after toothbrushing, the aloe vera and propolis dentifrice reduced the contamination of toothbrush bristles by sm, without differentiation from the other chemical agents used.

Abstract: Religious freedom has been always considered as a strong indicator democracy and institutional set up in a country. Ex- communist countries in their efforts to set up a state of law and foster democracy, particularly, are more sensible toward indicators such as religious freedom, tolerance and diversity considering them strong components of their social tissue necessary to set up a functional democracy. Their past legacy and history, are strong factors influencing their present and future. Analyzing the past, present and future of a country’s religiosity, religious freedom and tolerance, represent a valid contribution not only in terms of social assessment. They also compound a first layer for policies and strategies to create open societies and reinforce the institutional set up and rule of law. Albania, among these countries, represents a very unique case of variation in attitudes and relation toward religion along history. But a strong tolerant component characterizes the overall perception and behavior toward religious diversity. A historic, politic and social analysis of the Albanian case of religious tolerance and co-existence, necessary to understand the real western inspiration of the country and its democracy’s future, is the biggest contribution of this paper.

Abstract: this article is focused on the characteristics and aims of the chemistry of natural products analyzing the required knowledge from other fields to carry out research. through a brief historical development, it can be observed that it is related with various branches of chemistry, including organic chemistry, biological chemistry and bioanalytical chemistry as well as clinical biochemistry, among others. prospects in this field are provided, showing trends in research and in the international chemical industry. a multidisciplinar approach is evident in the research projects shown herein.

Abstract: En este trabajo se detallan las características y objetivos de la especialidad de Química de Productos Naturales, analizando los conocimientos requeridos de otras especialidades para realizar investigación en la misma. A través de un breve desarrollo histórico se puede observar la vinculación con varias ramas de la Química, como Química Orgánica, Química Biológica y Química Bioanalítica, así como Bioquímica Clínica, entre otras. Se brindan las perspectivas de esta especialidad, mostrando las tendencias en la investigación y en la industria química internacional. El trabajo multidisciplinario se evidencia en las aplicaciones presentadas en investigación. Neste trabalho sáo detalhadas as características e objetivos da especialidade de Química de Produtos Naturais, analisando os conhecimentos requeridos de outras especialidades para realizar pesquisa na mesma. Através de um breve desenvolvimento histórico é possível observar a vinculagáo com vários ramos da Química, como Química Orgánica, Química Biológica e Química Bioanalítica, bem como Bioquímica Clínica, dentre outras. Sáo oferecidas as perspectivas desta especialidade, mostrando as tendencias na pesquisa e na indústria química internacional. Abstract: a variety of methods have been developed for determination of drugs of abuse in urine, plasm/serum, bilis, hair and others in clinical and forensic samples. relevance of the application of the technique of gas-liquid chromatography and different types of mass spectrometry are discussed in this paper, being sample preparation emphasized. amphetamines, cannabinoids, cocaine and benzoylecgonine, morphine and metabolites, phenciclidine, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, opiates, local anesthetics and methadone were properly analysed and quantified by means of this methodology.

Abstract: Se han desarrollado varios métodos para determinar drogas de abuso en orina, plasma/suero, bilis, pelo y otros en muestras clínicas y forenses. En este trabajo se discute la importancia de la aplicación de la técnica de cromatografía gas-líquido y espectrometría de masa en sus diferentes tipos, con énfasis en la preparación de la muestra. Anfetaminas, canabinoides, cocaína y benzoílecgonina, morfina y metabolitos, fenciclidina, benzodiazepinas, antidepresivos tricíclicos, barbitúricos, opiatos, anestésicos locales y metadona se han analizado y cuantificado adecuadamente mediante esta metodología. Abstract: ambient mass spectrometry is a useful and rapidly growing new field that provides high sensitivity mass spectra directly from surfaces at atmospheric pressure. various ionization techniques, including desorption electrospray ionization (desi), direct analysis in real time (dart), plasma assisted desorption ionization (padi) and extractive electrospray ionization (eesi) have been used. this paper refers particularly to the fundamentals and applications of desi-ms based on imaging mass spectrometry. among other applications, desi is used for direct analysis of drugs and pharmaceutical formulations, samples of biological fluids, forensics, fingerprints, food, cultures of bacteria, identification and spatial distribution of chemicals in animal and plant tissues, and molecular biomarkers. it highlights the possibility of combination with thin layer chromatography and electropherograms to identify the compounds by mass spectrometry. this technique requires no sample preparation, and does not involve the use of matrix of ionization. it simplifies greatly the experimental procedure and avoids the redistribution of analytes during matrix deposition. the forensic analysis carried out by desi-ms and desi-ms/ms is discussed, including the detection of explosives and chemical warfare agents on solid surfaces near or at a distance from the mass spectrometer, analysis of fabric or clothing for explosives and drugs, image analysis for verification of documents, analysis of human skin, gunshot residue analysis, analysis of toxic gases and industrial warfare agent simulants, petroleum distillates and synthetic polymers. aplications in the field of lipidomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are analyzed. finally, current information on the quantitative analysis performed by desi-ms is provided.

Abstract: fruits and vegetables are a rich source of carotenoids, which provide health benefits reducing the risk of several diseases, including certain cancers, cardiovascular and eye diseases, supported by extensive epidemiologic observation. carotenoids that have been studied in this regard are b-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin. the rapid and large amount of experimental evidence has established that a diet containing tomato or products based on tomato results in a decrease of several types of cancer. this fact has stimulated extensive laboratory and clinical research as well as much commercial and public enthusiasm. however, evidence is controversial. the work of these authors on antioxidant compounds, especially in structural and bioactivity terms, has led to analyse whether the beneficial effects of lycopene are primarily due to its antioxidant properties or other possible mechanisms may be involved, such as the modulation of gap junctional intercellular communications, hormonal and immune systems, and metabolic pathways. in this paper, structural points of view, the antioxidant activity of lycopene, its content in tomatoes, other bioactive components, the possible mechanisms of action and their impact on prostate, colon, breast and endometrium cancer are discussed, according to case-control, cohort and epidemiological studies.

Abstract: La espectrometría de masas (MS) en condiciones ambientales es un campo nuevo de gran utilidad y de rápido crecimiento que provee espectros de masas de alta sensibilidad directamente a partir de superficies a presión atmosférica. Para ello se utilizan diversas técnicas de ionización, entre ellas: la ionización por desorción con electrospray (DESI: desorption electrospray ionization), el análisis directo en tiempo real (DART: direct analysis in real time), la ionización por desorción asistida por plasma (PADI: plasma assisted desorption ionization) y la ionización extractiva por electrospray (EESI: extractive electrospray ionization). Este trabajo se refiere en particular a los fundamentos y aplicaciones de DESI-MS con espectrometría de masas de imágenes. Entre otras aplicaciones, DESI es utilizado para el análisis directo de medicamentos y formulaciones farmacéuticas, muestras de fluidos biológicos, análisis forense, impresiones digitales, alimentos, cultivos de bacterias, identificación y distribución espacial de compuestos químicos en tejidos de origen animal y vegetal, y análisis de biomarcadores moleculares. Se destaca la posibilidad de combinación con cromatografía en capa delgada y con electroferogramas a fin de identificar mediante espectrometría de masas los compuestos presentes. Esta técnica no requiere preparación de las muestras y no implica el uso de matrices de ionización. Esto simplifica enormemente el procedimiento experimental y evita la redistribución de los analitos durante la deposición de la matriz. Se discute el análisis forense realizado con DESI-MS y DESI-MS/MS, respecto a: la detección de explosivos y agentes simulantes de guerra química en superficies sólidas cerca o a distancia del espectrómetro, análisis de telas o vestimenta en busca de explosivos y drogas, análisis de imágenes para la verificación de documentos, análisis sobre piel humana, análisis de residuos de disparos, análisis de gases tóxicos industriales y de agentes simulantes de guerra, de destilados de petróleo y de polímeros sintéticos. Se analizan las aplicaciones efectuadas en el campo de la lipidómica, proteómica y metabolómica. Por último, se brinda la información existente sobre el análisis cuantitativo realizado mediante DESI-MS.
