Can the Interspinous Distance Predict Kyphosis in Conservative Treatment in Thoracolumbar Burst Fracture? A Retrospective, Diagnostic Study  [PDF]
Robert Meves, Osmar Avanzi
Open Journal of Orthopedics (OJO) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojo.2016.61002
Abstract: Study Design: Retrospective, diagnostic study. Objective: To verify if the interspinous distance is able to predict the risk for kyphotic collapse in thoracolumbar burst fractures treated conservatively without neurological deficit. Summary of Background Data: In patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures, the association between the amount of comminution, by using load-sharing classification (LSC), and kyphotic collapse is presented in the literature. However, LSC does not include the interspinous distance as an indirect sign to suggest biomechanical instability due to posterior ligamentous disruption in these patients in order to predict kyphotic collapse. Methods: We added the interspinous distance to the load-sharing classification (MLSC) in 50 consecutive patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures (according to Denis criteria) treated conservatively. Results: The LSC score was correlated to kyphotic collapse in the patients treated with TLSO (r = 0.312, p = 0.027; Spearman test; A = 0.668). The MLSC was similarly correlated to kyphotic collapse among TLSO-treated patients (r = 0.295, p = 0.038; Spearman test; A = 0.652). Conclusions: The interspinous distance did not contribute to the identification of worse radiographic outcomes, represented by the kyphotic collapse. This may suggest that the amount of comminution pointed out by the LSC is enough and more important than the interspinous opening in order to predict kyphotic collapse in thoracolumbar burst fractures. Possibly, the interspinous distance is much too heterogenous and multifactorial to be useful, since it reflects vertebral body height, preinjury anatomy, as well as posterior element disruption.
Los orígenes del populismo latinoamericano: Una mirada diferente
GONZALES,OSMAR;
Cuadernos del Cendes , 2007,
Abstract: in this article the author proves that the antecedents of populism precede the politics of industrialization via replacement of importations and that the traditional latin-american populisms cannot be understood without these. he maintains that the consolidation of populism as a political strategy lays the foundations for a new dominance pact that establishes novel modes of relationship between state and society. in establishing his assertions, the author undertakes a critical review of the most important literature on latin-american populism, and outlines some tentative conclusions aimed to draw out the theoretical consequences of his approach.
Método para avaliar desenvolvimento sustentável: técnicas para escolha e pondera??o de aspectos e dimens?es
Siena, Osmar;
Produ??o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65132008000200012
Abstract: materialize the concept sustainable development is a complex problem, therefore the conceptual bases on the involved questions are not consolidated. there is no consensus on what to measure, how to measure and, principally, on as to ponder and combine data. this work argues and tests method for evaluation of the development in the perspective of sustainable development, considering the system to be evaluated composed of subsystems (people and ecosystem), eight dimensions and two categories. the dimensions contemplate aspects that are characteristic of the system that must be considered for the evaluation. consultation to system evaluated key actors precedes the choice and balance of the aspects and dimensions. it is argued the adoption of the factorial analysis as the technique for reduction of the number of aspects for evaluation. indices aggregate for dimensions, subsystems and for the system are calculated. for test of the approach proposal is carried through an application having as reference the state of rond?nia (brazil).

El Estado peruano durante el siglo XX. Aspectos teóricos y periodización
Gonzales, Osmar
In this article the author proves that the antecedents of populism precede the politics of industrialization via replacement of importations and that the traditional Latin-American populisms cannot be understood without these.
La crisis de los partidos peruanos. Apuntes para una lectura socio-histórica
Osmar Gonzales
Espacio Abierto , 1999,

Searching for Active Learning Methods for New Product Development Purposes  [PDF]
Anderson Dalmaz, Osmar Possamai, Aaron J. Armstrong
American Journal of Industrial and Business Management (AJIBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ajibm.2015.512082
Abstract: Individual learning is the base of the company learning. And learning on product development contexts is related to product success [1] [2]. Improving effectiveness of individual learning in a new product development (NPD) context could bring results to the company. Active learning (AL) is largely studied in literature and shows promising results to improve learning. Its objective is to increase learner engagement [3], having its fundamentals based on cognitive aspects of humans, as attention [3]. But what are the existing approaches? Could they be used in NPD contexts to increase efficiency of learning? The objective of this article is to address the first question (i) identifying approaches considered AL from literature. This article presents the list of approaches found and its descriptions. This descriptions will be used for the next steps of this research to be presented in future articles (i) identifying AL approaches already used in industry and (ii) suggesting a method aiming to increase learning in NPD context.
Lightning Enhancement in the Amazon Region Due to Urban Activity  [PDF]
Osmar Pinto Jr., Iara Regina Cardoso de Almeida Pinto, Osmar P. Neto
American Journal of Climate Change (AJCC) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajcc.2013.24026
Abstract:

Urbanization has an increasing contribution to anthropogenic climate forcing. The impact arises mainly from the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and aerosol anthropogenic emissions. An important but not completely understood consequence of this forcing is its effect on local lightning activity. Changes in lightning activity may result in a feedback on the climate system. In this article, it investigates changes in the lightning activity in the city of Manaus, located in the Amazon region of Brazil. It is found that, over the city, the lightning activity is larger than in the regions around it and it has been increasing in the last four decades simultaneously with the increasing of its urban area. Our results suggest that such changes are caused by the UHI effect. The observations reported here are unique and relevant because Manaus is located in the central part of the Amazon rainforest and inside one of the three global lightning chimneys in the world.
