Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2013.43092
Abstract:

Background: This document includes recommendations and guidelines issued by a group of Mexican researchers and specialists gathered in the First National Colloquium for the Diagnosis and Management of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) by initiative of Instituto Nacional de Cancerología and with the support of the Leukaemia Department of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Mexico lacks of updated information taken from its own reality on the diagnosis and treatment of CML and other haematological disorders; besides, there are no national guidelines. Aim: To publish a consensus document with guidelines for the management of CML adjusted to the national environment and overall characteristics. Method: The participants answered a DELPHI questionnaire about the overall aspects of the disease, aiming to target controversial topics, discuss them in the colloquium, and to agree on the best ones. After those meetings, a final document was drawn up. Results: The group presents recommendations for definition, diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and treatment of CML in Mexico. Conclusions: Having consensus guidelines for the clinical management of CML in our country will enable the consensual practice of Mexican specialists regarding the clinical approach to CML, as well as optimize the resources which allow the rational planning of the medical care strategies.

The Effect of Social Trust on Citizens’ Health Risk Perception in the Context of a Petrochemical Industrial Complex

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/ijerph10010399
Abstract: Perceived risk of environmental threats often translates into psychological stress with a wide range of effects on health and well-being. Petrochemical industrial complexes constitute one of the sites that can cause considerable pollution and health problems. The uncertainty around emissions results in a perception of risk for citizens residing in neighboring areas, which translates into anxiety and physiological stress. In this context, social trust is a key factor in managing the perceived risk. In the case of industrial risks, it is essential to distinguish between trust in the companies that make up the industry, and trust in public institutions. In the context of a petrochemical industrial complex located in the port of Castellón (Spain), this paper primarily discusses how trust — both in the companies located in the petrochemical complex and in the public institutions — affects citizens’ health risk perception. The research findings confirm that while the trust in companies negatively affects citizens’ health risk perception, trust in public institutions does not exert a direct and significant effect. Analysis also revealed that trust in public institutions and health risk perception are essentially linked indirectly (through trust in companies).
Spanish researchers’ perceived difficulty writing research articles for English-medium journals: the impact of proficiency in English versus publication experience

Ibérica , 2012,
Abstract: Previous quantitative studies suggest that the burden researchers who use English as an additional language perceive when writing research articles (RAs) for publication in English (as L2) is 24% greater than the burden they perceive when they write RAs for publication in their L1. It remains unclear precisely which aspects of research article (RA) writing in English present these writers with the greatest challenge and just why they perceive this increase in difficulty. A structured questionnaire comprising thirty-seven questions about researchers’ publication experiences in scientific journals in English and in Spanish was designed and sent out to all (n = 8,794) Spanish postdoctoral researchers at one research-only institution and four universities in Spain, yielding responses from 1,717 researchers. Our first results show that the discussion is the section that is perceived as more difficult to write for English-medium journals, across the four broad knowledge areas in a way that cannot be fully explained by their lower level of proficiency in English (as L2). This article proposes the rhetorical transfer hypothesis as a possible explanation for their additional difficulty. Our results also reveal that their increased perceived difficulty writing RA discussions in English (as L2) does not decrease noticeably until Spanish researchers report high or very high levels of proficiency in English (as L2) for academic or general purposes or have published on average at least 37 RAs as corresponding author in English-medium journals over the last ten years. Implications for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) research and pedagogy are discussed.
EFECTO DE LA DENSIDAD DE SIEMBRA SOBRE EL CRECIMIENTO Y SUPERVIVENCIA DE NODIPECTEN NODOSUS (BIVALVIA: PECTINIDAE) EN UN NUEVO ARTE DE CULTIVO

Abstract: as a contribution to determine the biological and technological feasibility of the culture of n. nodosus in the colombian caribbean, the effect of two cover densities (30 and 50 %) upon growth and survival was evaluated between april and november 2007. in cages suspended in the sea at 5 m depth juveniles between 60 and 65 mm length were placed. shell lengths and survival were measured each 15 days. in the same manner, temperature, salinity, seston and particulate organic matter were measured in order to determine relationships with these factors; n. nodosus reached a length of 84.7 and 87.9 mm at densities of 30 and 50 %, respectively. treatments affected growth but did not affect significantly survival. a direct relation between growth and organic matter and between growth and total seston were detected. survival maintained a similar trend until july at both densities, presenting in turn a direct relation to particulate organic matter. results demonstrate that n. nodosus presents a good development at high densities, which allow to have a greater utilization of the culture art, hence increasing its productivity.

Abstract: the high prevalence of hypophyseal macroadenomas worlwide motivated us to carry out this research, whose fundamental aim was to demonstrate the value of ct in the presumptive diagnosis of the histological variety of hypophyseal macroadenomas, as well as of other less frequent tumours of the sellar region, considering the clinical picture. to this end, 124 patients operated on with a clinical and tomographic diagnosis of hypophyseal macroadenomas and other tumours were studied. age, sex, hospital stay, tomographic signs, and postsurgical anatomopathological results were registered. the highest incidence was found in the hypophyseal adenomas (110), with predominance of the non-secreting adenomas (41.1 %). most of the patients were 30-50. the female sex prevailed in the adrenocorticotropic adenomas and meningiomas, and the male sex in gonadotropin and prolactin-producing adenomas. within the tomographic signs the erosion of the clinoid and sellar dorsum, and hydrocephalus, predominated in the non-secreting adenomas and in the non-adenohypohyseal tumours. the gonadotropin-producing adenomas stood out in the erosion of the floor and in sellar ballooning as well as the adrenocorticotropic adenomas. the calcifications were more common in teratomas and craniopharyngiomas, as well as and the non-homogenous capture of the contrast agent, which was characteristic in these cases, as in rathke's pouch cysts. ct showed its great diagnostic value in hypophyseal macroadenomas, and other tumours of the sellar region, taking into account the patient's clinical picture.

Abstract: the high prevalence of hypophyseal macroadenomas in the world motivated us to conduct this research aimed at demonstrating the value of computerized tomography and its usefulness to define the surgical technique in these cases. to this end, 124 patients operated on with the clinical tomographic diagnosis of hypophyseal macroadenomas and other tumors of the sellar region that were less common were studied. 100 % of the tumors with c-e and c-d growth were approached by transcranial route, whereas in the other 99 with a, b or c growth, it was used the transsphenoidal route. the tomographic and clinical complications were higher in the first route, and the tumor debris (40 %), the relapses (28 %) and the damage of the cranial nerves (28 %) stood out. the postoperative clinical improvement attained was significant the same as the degree of control of the adenomas, which showed the high diagnostic value of computerized tomography and its usefulness to establish the suitable surgical strategy. this shows a high sensitivity in the detection of some postoperative complications that may be assessed by using this method.

Theoretical and Conceptual Approaches to Co-Regulation: A Theoretical Review  [PDF]
Javier Moreno, Luis Sanabria, Omar López
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.713153
Abstract: During the last two decades, interpersonal regulation in natural and digital learning environments has gained importance. Ever since the first conceptual and methodo-logical precisions regarding collaborative learning were made, educational psychology has focused its interest on analyzing collective regulation of motivation, cognition, and behavior. Despite the fact that the body of research on co-regulation has grown, emerging epistemological frameworks evidence a lack of conceptual and theoretical clarity. In response to this situation, the authors propose a conceptual approach in order to address interpersonal regulation in four aspects: first, they describe three learning theories which have been used to study co-regulation. Second, the authors recommend a conceptual delimitation of terms regarding the learning theories on social regulation. Third, they highlight diffuse boundaries between theoretical ap-proaches and terms used in the literature on co-regulation. Finally, the authors suggest some challenges the researchers in this field face.
