Abstract: nursing professionals working in emergency care suffer from the physical symptoms of stress in their everyday activity. the objective of this study was to characterize these symptoms using the occupational stress indicator, a semi-structured instrument. to do this, the authors created open questions that were applied in interviews that were recorded and analyzed. the researchers listed the following physical symptoms: headache, a sensation of fatigue, leg pain, and tachycardia. according to reports form the workers, pain always resulted from emotional stress or appeared after providing emergency care, which suggests the workers find it very difficult to differentiate physical from mental stress. the investigation found that there is a need for measures to follow workers in their working activity. a manual was created, containing basic suggestions to improve the quality of life of the health team.

Abstract: Objective: to search the history of hospital accreditation in Brazil; define the concept of hospital accreditation, analyze data on hospital accreditation. Methodology: this is a literature review. The articles were selected through the title and abstract, checking their suitability to the theme proposed in this study. Held reading and rereading the articles and books found, allowing reflection on the meanings attributed to the hospital accreditation. Results: Florence Nightingale deployed the first model of continuous quality improvement in health. The first edition of the Brazilian Manual of Accreditation was manufactured in 1998, this has been improving culminating with the release of the latest edition published in 2006 in a sample that has seven volumes. We see this approach to study the history of the first Brazilian Manual of overlaps with the emergence of the ONA, so that part of the common goal. Conclusion: believe that qualifying is paramount in the pursuit of excellence in service which is the essence of caring, building trust and good reputation so important to the pursuit of customers become increasingly demanding about the quality of their lives.

Abstract: schistosomiasis mansoni is a tropical disease and remains as an important public healthy problem in northeast - brazil, where it is highly endemic. this disease has the liver as the major focus of its histological lesions, physiopathological alterations and clinical manifestations. previous studies have shown alteration on lipid metabolism in the hepatosplenic form of schistosomiasis. one of the main alterations is the reduction on lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (lcat) activity, an hepatic enzyme that catalyze the esterification of cholesterol in plasma in this work, we evaluate the lcat activity in plasma from patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni who were subjected to a new surgical treatment, which consists of splenectomy followed by auto-transplantation of spleen tissue. lcat activity was detected by using a radioactive substrate. both [14c]free and esterified cholesterol produced by the lcat reaction were separated by thin layer chromatography, and the sample radioactivity was counted in a liquid scintilation analyzer. lcat activity from plasma of patients subjected to splenectomy and spleen tissue implantation were reduced by 32 %, in comparison to the control group. however, in schistosoma mansoni patients who were only clinically treated the reduction on lcat activity was twice (64%) as much as that found in plasma of patients subjected to splenectomy and spleen tissue implantation. these results suggest a significant improvement on lcat activity after the surgical treatment of patients with the hepatosplenic form of schistosomiasis mansoni.

Abstract: this paper investigated the effects of modified atmosphere packing (60% n2 and 40% co2) and irradiation (with a 1.5kgy dose) either used alone or combined on the shelf life of fillets of refrigerated nile tilapia. a total of 120 fillets were used in the experiments in order to test four different treatments and included samples: packed in air (control), packed in modified atmosphere, packed in air and irradiated, and finally, packed in modified atmosphere and irradiated. regular monitoring of physicochemical parameters (tvb, ph, ammonia and tbars), bacteriological conditions (heterotrophic aerobic mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria) and sensory acceptance were performed. the results consistently indicated an increasing deterioration of the fillets with time, however those treated with irradiation, modified atmosphere or both combined had longer shelf lives (around two weeks) in comparison with the control (4 days only).

Abstract: the purpose was to translate the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis severity scale (alsss) into portuguese, to validate it and assess its reliability. the scale was submitted to bilingual translators, its abbreviation in portuguese being egela; three physical therapists were trained for its application. twenty-two patients (5 women, 17 men, mean age 45.9) were evaluated by the egela and by the functional independence measure (fim); 11 of them were assessed for dysphagia classification. in all alsss domains the intraclass correlation coefficients were over 0.89; high internal consistency was found in all scale domains and for each examiner. strong correlations were found between motor fim and spinal alsss (r=0.87; p<0.0001), alsss swallow domain and both dysphagia classifications (r=-0.88; p=0.0015), and alsss speech domain and expression fim (r=0.76; p<0.001). the portuguese version of alsss showed significant inter-examiner reliability and internal consistency, as well as strong correlations with fim scores, thus proving a valid and reliable tool for assessing patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Abstract: mucoid burkholderia cepacia morphotype emerged within a nine year follow-up of a cystic fibrosis patient. clinical data suggested a linkage between the mucoid phenotype isolation and the deterioration of the patient's condition. despite of the phenotypic variation, molecular typing showed that the patient was chronically infected with b. cepacia complex isolates belonging to a same genetic clone.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the activity of essential oils (EOs) against Streptococcus mutans biofilm by chemically characterizing their fractions responsible for biological and antiproliferative activity. Twenty EO were obtained by hydrodistillation and submitted to the antimicrobial assay (minimum inhibitory (MIC) and bactericidal (MBC) concentrations) against S. mutans UA159. Thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry were used for phytochemical analyses. EOs were selected according to predetermined criteria and fractionated using dry column; the resulting fractions were assessed by MIC and MBC, selected as active fractions, and evaluated against S. mutans biofilm. Biofilms formed were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Selected EOs and their selected active fractions were evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against keratinocytes and seven human tumor cell lines. MIC and MBC values obtained for EO and their active fractions showed strong antimicrobial activity. Chemical analyses mainly showed the presence of terpenes. The selected active fractions inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation (<0.05) did not affect glycolytic pH drop and were inactive against keratinocytes, normal cell line. In conclusion, EO showed activity at low concentrations, and their selected active fractions were also effective against biofilm formed by S. mutans and human tumor cell lines.
