The Comparison of the Levels of Leukotriene B4, TGF-β1, Collagen in Keloid Fibroblasts and Normal Skin Fibroblast  [PDF]

Abstract:
Keloid pathogenesis occurs due to the longer duration of inflammation and the increase in the production of several factors such as TGF-β1 that causes the increase of fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. The role of B4 Leukotriene (LTB4) in keloid pathogenesis particularly in the inflammation phase and tissue proliferation has not been clearly elucidated. The present study was to analyze the levels of LTB4, TGF-β1 and collagen in keloid fibroblast and normal skin fibroblast. Fibroblasts were cultured by applying explant method to the keloid and normal skin of the petient with the keloid. The measurement of the levels of LTB4, TGF-β1 and collagen was conducted by using Elisa method and triplicate was conducted subsequently. Statistic testing was performed through unpaired t test. The experiment was carried out in cell culture laboratory of The Faculty of Medicine Padjajaran University Bandung. The levels of LTB4, TGF-β1 are higher in keloid fibroblast, despite the fact that it does not show statistically significant difference. The level of collagen 1 is higher than that of collagen 3 in keloid fibroblast. Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) is one of the derivative of arachidonic acid that plays the role as lipid mediumtor of inflammation and fibroblast chemoattractant. The levels of LTB4, TGF-β1, collagen 1 and collagen 3 increase in keloid fibroblast. Such a result shows the role of LTB4 in the inflammation process that stretches in keloid pathogenesis.

Abstract: A smart hybrid conversion coating has been developed. Modifications of coating solutions with poly-hydroxyl organic materials to reduce the usual mud cracking pattern characteristics of chromate conversion coatings (CCCs) and improve its ability to release inhibitors to corroding sites have been achieved. The smart functionalised chromate conversion coating (SFCCC), developed on aluminium substrate has undergone laboratory checks and commercial runs under factory conditions confirmed its potency in improving corrosion resistance and paint adhesion to metal surfaces. In-service performance of the coating in the past three years is excellent.
Relationship between Turbid Water and Coral Damage Distribution Using ALOS AVNIR-2 Images and Diving Survey Data Immediately after the Heavy Rain Disaster of the Amami-Oshima Island, Japan  [PDF]

Abstract: To understand the relationship between turbid water and coral damage caused by the heavy rain disaster at the end of October 2010 in Amami-Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, turbid water and coral damage distribution monitoring was attempted using satellite imagery and a diving survey immediately after the disaster. ALOS AVNIR-2 images (spatial resolution: 10 m) on October 6 (before the disaster), October 24, October 30, and October 31 (after the disaster) were obtained as satellite data in 2010. The red-silt deposition index (RSI) map based on the method by Nadaoka and Tamura (1992) was also created. Moreover, a diving survey was conducted via the spot check method on December 18, 2010. As a result, comparison between the high turbidity (RSI) areas estimated using AVNIR-2 data and the coral damage areas judging from the field survey was considered relatively light. It is shown that satellite data such as AVNIR-2 can be a powerful tool to monitor damage distribution of coral reefs after heavy rain.
Corrosion Inhibition of Mild Steel in Hydrochloric Acid by Tannins Rom Rhizophora Racemosa  [PDF]

Abstract: Studies on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel electrodes in inhibited hydrochloric acid are described. Conventional weight loss measurements show that a maximum concentration of 140 ppm of tannin from Rhizophora racemosa is required to achieve 72% corrosion inhibition. Similar concentration of tannin: H3PO4 in ratio 1:1 gave 61% inhibition efficiency, whereas efficiency obtained for phosphoric acid as inhibitor in the same environment was 55%. Corrosion rates obtained over six hours of exposure in 1M HCl solution at inhibitor concentrations of 140 ppm are 2 mA/cm2, 2.4 mA/cm2, 2.6 mA/cm2 and 6 mA/cm2 for tannin, tannin/H3PO4 and H3PO4-inhibited and uninhibited specimens respectively. Natural atmospheric exposure studies revealed that specimens treated in H3PO4 resisted corrosion for three weeks, while tannin treated specimens suffered corrosion attack after one week of exposure tests.
Why is the Ratio of Reflectivity Effective for Chlorophyll Estimation in the Lake Water?

Abstract: The reasons why it is effective to estimate the chlorophyll-a concentration with the ratio of spectral radiance reflectance at the red light region and near infrared regions were shown in theory using a two-flow model. It was found that all of the backscattering coefficients can consequently be ignored by using the ratio of spectral radiance reflectance, which is the ratio of the upward radiance to the downward irradiance, at the red light and near infrared regions. In other words, the ratio can be expressed by using only absorption coefficients, which are more stable for measurement than backscattering coefficients. In addition, the band selection is crucial for producing the band ratio when the chlorophyll-a concentration is estimated without the effects of backscattering. I conclude that the two wavelengths selected must be close, but one must be within the absorption range of chlorophyll-a, and the other must be outside of the absorption range of chlorophyll-a, in order to accurately estimate the chlorophyll-a concentration.

Abstract: Technetiiim-99m is an ideal radionuclide with optimum decay characteristics. It can be obtained in sterile, pyrogen-free and carrier-free condition, as sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4), from 99Mo/99Tc generator. Because of its six-hour physical half-life and monochromatic 140 keV photons free of -radiation, administration of small amounts of 99mTc solution is possible, without a significant radiation damage to the patient. Technetium eluted from the 99Mo/99mTc generator is in the highest oxidation form (+7). It can be used for diagnostic purposes alone, but it is often used for labeling different organic and inorganic compounds. As it is unreactive, reduction with a chemical reductant, (+1), (+3) and (+5) oxidation are necessary before use. Nowadays almost 80% of radiopharmaceuticals are based on 99mTc. Radiopharmaceuticals. Radiopharmaceuticals are radionuclides or radioactive compounds used in diagnosis and therapy of human diseases. A pharmaceutical is chosen based on its localization in the organ, or its participation in its physiological function. Radiation emitted from a radionuclide is detected by a radiation detector. The ability to incorporate available radionuclides into tracer molecules has been the main goal in developing radiopharmaceuticals. As radionuclides with nuclear characteristics used as either diagnostic or therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, are predominantly metals, they can be designed as metal essential, whereby biological distribution is determined by coordination compound, or metal tagged, in which case the properties of the carrier molecule (ligand system) determine the biological distribution. This paper reviews the development of 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals. .
Morbus gaucher: A report of two cases

Abstract: Backround. Clinical features of inherited glucocerebrosidase deficiency were first described by Phillippe Charles Ernest Gaucher, French physician (1854-1918). Deficiency of glucocerebrosidase leads to the accumulation of the lipid glucocerebroside within the lysosomes of the monocyte macrophage system. Lipid-laden cells, known as Gaucher cells, lead to hepatosplenomegaly, multiorgan dysfunction and sceletal deterioration. Case report. We reported a 36- year-old male and a 42-year-old female admitted for the clinical examination due to hepatosplenomegaly. The Clinical diagnosis was provided by a bone marrow examination and demonstration of the characteristic Gaucher cells. Both of the patients had type I Gaucher's disease (a mild form of the disease), which is distinguished by the lack of central nervous system involvement and striking phenotypic variation. We had not a possibility of testing β-glucocerebrosidase activity in peripheral leukocytes (a definitive diagnosis of Gaucher's disease). Also, enzyme replacement therapy had not been available in our country. Conclusion. Althoungh rare, Gaucher's disease is also present in our country. Both molecular genetic, and the enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase activity testing in peripheral leukocytes are needed for the definitive diagnosis of this disease.
