Simulated Estimates of Pre-Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in the US: 1980 to 2008

Abstract: Purpose To simulate national estimates of prepregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in non-Hispanic white (NHW) and non-Hispanic black (NHB) women. Methods Prepregnancy diabetes and GDM were estimated as a function of age, race/ethnicity, and body mass index (BMI) using South Carolina live singleton births from 2004–2008. Diabetes risk was applied to a simulated population. Age, natality and BMI were assigned to women according to race- and age-specific US Census, Natality and National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) data, respectively. Results From 1980–2008, estimated GDM prevalence increased from 4.11% to 6.80% [2.68% (95% CI 2.58%–2.78%)] and from 3.96% to 6.43% [2.47% (95% CI 2.39%–2.55%)] in NHW and NHB women, respectively. In NHW women prepregnancy diabetes prevalence increased 0.90% (95% CI 0.85%–0.95%) from 0.95% in 1980 to 1.85% in 2008. In NHB women from 1980 through 2008 estimated prepregnancy diabetes prevalence increased 1.51% (95% CI 1.44%–1.57%), from 1.66% to 3.16%. Conclusions Racial disparities in diabetes prevalence during pregnancy appear to stem from a higher prevalence of prepregnancy diabetes, but not GDM, in NHB than NHW.

Abstract: The long-term properties of continuous fiber reinforced composite materials are increasingly important as applications in airplanes, cars, and other safety critical structures are growing rapidly. Although a clear understanding has been established for initiation, growth and accumulation of damage, it is still unclear when and how the interactions of these local events lead to the development of a “critical” fracture path resulting in a sudden change of global properties and possible rupture. In the present paper, we simulate damage development in a neat polymeric resin using X-FEM analysis, and conduct concomitant dielectric response analysis with a COMSOLTM simulation model to study the collective defect structure as it develops in a model system. Our studies reveal inflection points in the predicted global dielectric response vs. strain that are related to changes in local damage growth rates and modes that clearly indicate impending fracture and capture the progressive change in material state.
Stationary Flow of Blood in a Rigid Vessel in the Presence of an External Magnetic Field: Considerations about the Forces and Wall Shear Stresses  [PDF]

Abstract: The magnetohydrodynamics laws govern the motion of a conducting fluid, such as blood, in an externally applied static magnetic field B0. When an artery is exposed to a magnetic field, the blood charged particles are deviated by the Lorentz force thus inducing electrical currents and voltages along the vessel walls and in the neighboring tissues. Such a situation may occur in several biomedical applications: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic drug transport and targeting, tissue engineering… In this paper, we consider the steady unidirectional blood flow in a straight circular rigid vessel with non-conducting walls, in the presence of an exterior static magnetic field. The exact solution of Gold (1962) (with the induced fields not neglected) is revisited. It is shown that the integration over a cross section of the vessel of the longitudinal projection of the Lorentz force is zero, and that this result is related to the existence of current return paths, whose contributions compensate each other over the section. It is also demonstrated that the classical definition of the shear stresses cannot apply in this situation of magnetohydrodynamic flow, because, due to the existence of the Lorentz force, the axisymmetry is broken.
RADIOLARIOS POLYCYSTINA (PROTOZOA: NASSELLARIA Y SPUMELLARIA) SEDIMENTADOS EN LA ZONA CENTRO-SUR DE CHILE (36°- 43° S)

Abstract: the radiolarians are planktonic marine protozoans, which although be only one cell, are sophisticated and complex organisms. the subclass radiolaria is formed by two superorders: trypilea and polycystina, this last is the most studied, because its skeleton from opal is resistent to the sea water disolution and for this reason are preserved in the fosil record. the radiolarians have been used like a useful oceanographic, biostratigraphic and paleoambiental tool for their silica skeleton and large geologic range. in our country the knowledge of this group is poor, for this reason the present work has the objective to contribute with the indentification and description of polycystins radiolarians not described and recorded before for this particular zone. the material used was obtained to the puck r/v sonne cruise so-156 valparaíso-chiloé-talcahuano expedition realized in may of 2001. the 20 samples were obtained with a multicore between 125 and 3.485 m depth distributed from concepción to chiloé (36°-43°s). were idientified 28 species appertaining to 20 genus and 9 families. the major amount of individuals was found in the station 3 in front of concepción to 789 m depth, this could be associated at the seasonals upwelling periods and process to sedimentation of the shells and opal disolution relatively short. southward decrease the abundance of the two orders studied.

Abstract: Los radiolarios son protozoos planctónicos marinos, los cuales, a pesar de ser sólo una célula, son sofisticados y complejos organismos. La Subclase Radiolaria está formada por 2 superórdenes: Trypilea y Polycystina, siendo el último el más estudiado, pues su esqueleto de opal es más resistente a la disolución en agua de mar y por ende, más comúnmente preservados en el registro fósil. Los radiolarios han sido usados como una útil herramienta oceanográfica, bioestratigráfica y paleoambiental, gracias a su esqueleto de sílice y a su gran rango geológico. En nuestro país el conocimiento de este grupo es muy escaso, es por esto que el presente trabajo, tiene como principal objetivo, aportar con la identificación y descripción de especies de radiolarios Polycystinos, no antes registrados para esta zona en particular. El material fue recolectado por la Expedición PUCK R/V Sonne Cruise SO-156 Valparaíso-Chiloé-Talcahuano realizada en mayo de 2001. Se analizaron 20 muestras tomadas entre 125 y 3.485 m de profundidad, distribuidas desde Concepción hasta Chiloé (36o-43oS). Se identificaron un total de 28 especies pertenecientes a 20 géneros y a 9 familias. La mayor cantidad de individuos fue encontrada en la estación 3 frente a Concepción a 798 m de profundidad, lo que se asocia a los periodos de surgencias estacionales y a procesos de sedimentación de las testas y disolución del opal relativamente cortos. Hacia el sur disminuye notablemente la abundancia de ambos órdenes estudiados. Abstract: La création d’une image de marque d’un pays est égalementune question actuelle et difficile. Nous présentons ici les premières tentatives,lesquelles copient d’une manière facheuse sur le style occidental ouaméricain, ce qui a pour conséquence l’uniformisation. Une image deCOMMUNICATIO marque doit faire, au contraire, la différence. On y analyse, avec ses mérites et ses déficiences, l’expérience Sibiu – capitale culturelle européenne – uneréussite pour l’image du peuple roumain, même d’un point de vue financier. L’histoire de cette aventure roumaine au plus haut niveau, a prouvé lacapacité du pays de dépasser l’humble condition de fournisseur horror . Selon nous, l’accent fut porté avec trop d’insistance sur le divertissement et la relaxation, en grossissant le portrait d’une destination de vacances commune. Attendu qu’il est possible que la ville de Iasi soit capitaleculturelle en 2019 et vu que, cette année, on célèbre 600 ans d’attestion documentaire, nous proposons non pas une sorte de campagne d’image de marque du pays, mais on souligne la nécessité de mettre les nations en relief. Sans sentimentalismes et attitude patriotarde, nous ponctuons quelqueséléments capables de sortir de l’anonymat, de sorte que les zones grises ne restent pas définitivement recouvertes par des clichés. L’infusion culturelle, la particularité réelle de la nation roumaine peuvent créer une diversité bien dosée, susceptible de contenter, d’améliorer l’infrastructure, en fructifiant simultanément le capital humain.

Abstract: La autora aborda los malos tratos en la infancia, desde una perspectiva contextual-sistémica. Expone los diferentes tipos de malos tratos, así como los diferentes niveles de sensibilidad de una sociedad a cada uno de ellos, cuestionando la actitud, a veces irresponsable, de los profesionales en contacto con los contextos maltratantes. Propone como alternativa, la creación de una red funcional de intervención (equipo), en la que se definan claramente las jerarquías (jurídica y técnica) y en la que se expliciten los objetivos terapéuticos, los medios a utilizar, las tareas específicas de cada profesional de la red, los contactos dentro de ella y el calendario de evaluaciones.

The delivery of palliative care is often complex and always involves a group of people, the team, gathered around the patient and those who are close to them. Effective communication and functional responsive systems of care are essential if palliative care is to be delivered in a timely and competent way. Creating and fostering an effective team is one of the greatest challenges for providers of palliative care. Teams are organic and can be life giving or life sapping for their members.

Abstract: the chemical components of the coffee beans are fairly well studied, however very little is known about the factors affecting the coffee beverage. in the present report are discussed the results obtained in a trial to determine the variability in the acidity, soluble solids and cup quality in samples of pulped coffee of several selected strains of 'mundo novo', 'bourbon amarelo' and 'bourbon vermelho' cultivars. the samples were collected from a yield trial which contains replications protected by shade trees and others grown without shading. the total acidity of the 'bourbon vermelho' strains beverage, of 1.3 either for shaded or without shade replications, is higher than that obtained for the 'mundo novo', which attained the value of 1.2 for both series of replications. the average percentages of soluble solids for the 'bourbon amarelo' 29.19 and 29.49 for the replications without and with shade are higher than those found in the samples of 'mundo novo' strains, of 28.90 and 28.58, respectively. the soluble solids content for the 'bourbon vermelho' strains is also higher (5 per cent probability) than those obtained for the 'mundo novo'. the cup quality analysis revealed that all examined samples are similar to the standard of the soft type, with exception of the samples of the 'mundo novo' strain lcp 391 from the replications without shading and lcp 379-19 under shade, which furnished a better cup quality. the 'mundo novo' strains gave on the average, a better cup quality thant that of 'bourbon vermelho'. the total acidity values of the 'bourbon vermelho' strains are similar to those of 'bourbon amarelo' and 'mundo novo'. the results obtained indicated also that the coffee produced under shade trees does not differ from that harvested in the replications without shade in relation to the total acidity, percentage of soluble solids in the beverage, and also to cup quality.
