Morais, Normanda Araujo de;Leito, Hilmeri da Silva;Koller, Sílvia Helena;Campos, Herculano Ricardo;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722004000300006
Abstract: this work investigates the positive and negative aspects of the experience of living in a boarding school to the psychological development of students, the influences of the collective experience on the school performance and the conception of an ideal boarding school. five semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15-22 year-old students. data was analyzed through content analysis. both positive and negative aspects of the boarding school experience were pointed out from the group-gathering category (possibility of making new friends versus fights and arguments). the limitations of the boarding school concerning facilities and physical structure, as well as the stressful routine, were the main implications of the collective experience on the school performance. the interns' concept of an ideal boarding school depended on facilities and structure improvements, and on the quality of the relationships. the results are important to educative context comprehension's that received little attention in the literatura.

Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212002000100007
Abstract: in may 1987, a female of bothrops jararaca (wied, 1824), from carazinho, rio grande do sul (rs), brazil, was placed in the same vivarium with a male of bothrops neuwiedi wagler, 1824 coming from guaíba, rs. there, they stayed for aproximately ten months. in march 1988, it was observed a delivery of five live and two still born, among them six presented morphologic characteristics of b. neuwiedi and one of b. jararaca. after the female died, in april 1988, through necropsy, two fetusus were found, one near the cloaca and, both identified as b. neuwiedi. the morphologic analysis and the origin of the progenitors suggest the hypothesis that the litter was resulted of cross-breeding.

Progressive muscular dystrophy: Duchenne type. Controversies of the kinesitherapy treatment
Leito, Ana Valéria de Araujo;Duro, Luiz Alves;Penque, Glória Maria Cardoso de Andrade;
Sao Paulo Medical Journal , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-31801995000500007
Abstract: the authors carried out a study of children with progressive muscular dystrophy of duchenne type (dmd), giving special attention to physiatrical follow-up, having in mind that the practice of exercises has been debated very much in the specialized literature. the goal of this study is to try to settle the limits for the utilization of kinesitherapy which should be applied only in specific situations, such as: after skeletal muscular trauma or when the respiratory system is at risk. in this situation the physiatrical procedure would be to restrict physical activity, with early use of wheelchairs and the exclusion of the use of orthoses for orthostatism. dmd, at present, has been considered a result of duplication (60%), deletion (5 to 6%) or point mutations at gen xp21 (zatz, 1994), that codifies a protein called dystrophin ( hoffman et al., 1987). dystrophin is a cytoskeletal sarcolemmic protein that constitutes about .002% of the total protein of the muscle, present in skeletal fibers concentrated in muscle tendinous joints, which supplies mechanical reinforcement to the surface of the membrane during stretching and shortening physical activity. this protein is absent in dmd cases, wherefore, the sarcolemma undergoes a segmentary necrosis losing its contractile property during eccentric and concentric physical activity. the importance of physiatrical follow-up for dmd patients is to avoid deformities and tendon shortening, to ameliorate the patient's quality of life, to provide respiratory assistance and general couseling to members of the patient's family. the objective of this study is to try to clarify the risks and possibilities of kinesitherapy applied to dmd cases.

Abstract: although male and female snakes are born with the same size, growth rates and age of sexual maturation may be different, thus determining sexual dimorphism in the later stages of life. we evaluated the incidence of sexual and ontogenetic morphometric variation in bothropoides jararaca (wied, 1824), exploring relationships involving body size and sexual maturity through 14 morphometric variables. we analyzed 142 specimens from the state of rio grande do sul, southern brazil. morphometric data - head length, snout-vent length, tail length, total length; head width, ocular width, nasal-loreal width, tail width; nasal-ocular distance, ocular-loreal distance, loreal-nasal distance, ventral-sinfisal distance and rostral-labial distance - and length/diameter of ovarian follicles, were taken in millimeters by simple rule and analogical caliper, precision 0.05 mm. sex determination was performed by inspection of the gonads. age was associated to sexual maturity. for the statistical analysis the analysis of variance (anova) with tukey's post hoc test was used with, linear regression and canonical discriminant analysis (cda). most measures indicated sexual dimorphism (anova, p<0.05) only in adults (tukey, p<0.05). regression analysis showed that snout-vent length explains the behavior of other variables (p< 0.001) and in all measures, females grow more than males. the adc has been successful in separating the genders and age groups, with biological meaning, whereas 79.2% of cases were correctly classified.
Adolescentes em situa??o de vulnerabilidade social e o continuum risco-prote??o
Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana , 2012,
Abstract: a multiple case study design was applied to data collected through ecological engagement in developmental contexts of adolescents in socially vulnerable situations. four adolescents were selected from a larger study of 98 brazilian adolescents in two distinct groups (g1 - youth in street situations and g2 - impoverished youth living with their families). the selected adolescents had the highest and lowest adjustment scores in their respective groups. quantitative data and observational field notes were used to describe the four youth on indicators of adjustment and risk and protective factors. results indicated points of convergence and divergence between the cases and the existence of a continuum of social vulnerability that was strongly related to how risk and protective factors interact in the life of each adolescent, rather than being strongly related to living situation (street or families).

Universitas Psychologica , 2012,

Abstract: purpose: investigate the effects of a single electroacupuncture (ea) session at acupoints zusanli (st-36) and zhongwan (cv-12) combined in regulating oxidative stress in liver and kidney in anesthetized rats. methods: eighteen healthy rats randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=6) were anesthetized intraperitoneally with ketamine (90mg kg-1 body weight) + xylazine (10mg/kg body weight): g-1: control (anesthesia), g-2: anesthesia+ea10hz and 10 ma, 10 hz) applied to right st-36 and cv-12 acupoints for 30 minutes. g-3 was likewise treated, using a tenfold higher frequency (100 hz). g6pdh activity, malondialdehyde (mda) and glutathione (gsh) levels were assayed spectrophotometrically. results: liver mda and gsh concentrations increased significantly in rats submitted to ea 10hz (p<0.01) and ea 100hz (p<0.001), compared with control g-1. liver and kidney g6gph activity decreased significantly in g-2 (p<0.01) and g-3 (p<0.001) compared with g-1 in ea100hz rats. a similar pattern was found in kidney g6pdh activity in ea10hz rats. conclusion: single 30-minute ea 10/100hz session enhances lipid peroxidation and simultaneously reduces oxidative stress in liver and kidney tissues in a rat model.
Fatores de prote??o relacionados à promo??o de resiliência em pessoas que vivem com HIV/AIDS
Carvalho, Fernanda Torres de;Morais, Normanda Araujo de;Koller, Sílvia Helena;Piccinini, Cesar Augusto;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000900011
Abstract: the aim of this theoretical review was to articulate the resilience concept with key aspects in the lives of people living with hiv/aids. we emphasize the analysis of protective factors traditionally related to resilience (personal characteristics and social and affective support networks). the reviewed studies show important protective factors that contribute to the health and well-being of people with hiv/aids, such as cognitive coping and acceptance of their hiv status, family participation in treatment and family support, the role of governmental and nongovernmental institutions, and religious beliefs. the concept of resilience defined as a dynamic process that allows human beings to overcome adversities is essential for understanding hiv infection and treatment of aids patients. it helps decrease stigmatization and prejudice towards the disease and patients. it also helps alter the notion that living with aids is incompatible with well-being and quality of life and fosters the creation of new hiv/aids prevention and treatment perspectives.
