Smoking Cause Specific Lung Cancer—Evidence from Non-Smoking Lung Adenocarcinoma  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Smoking and non-smoking lung cancer have many differences in clinical feature. But those may be the result of interference due to differences in pathological type, as most smoking patients suffer squmous cell lung cancer and non-smokings tend to get adenocarcinoma. This study was conducted on the specific histological type-lung adenocarcinoma-to avoid histological bias and to reveal the true effect of smoking. Methods: A total of 2222 patients with lung adenocarcinoma confirmed by histological or cytological evidence were enrolled from January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2004. Differences in clinical features and prognosis between non-smoking and smoking patients were analyzed.Chisquare test was used for univariate comparisons. Univariate probability of survival was computed using Kaplan-Meier estimate and compared to using the log-rank test. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk of death. Results: There were 777 current smokers (34.96%), 197 former smokers (8.87%) and 1248 non-smoking patients (56.17%). 860 non-smoking patients (68.91%) were female, compared with 6.31% among current smokers and 4.06% among former smokers (p < 0.001). Non-smoking patients had an earlier age at diagnosis (p < 0.001) and a better response to chemotherapy (p < 0.001) compared to current smoking patients. Current smoking correlated with lower cell differentiation (p < 0.001) and worse prognosis (p = 0.0024). After multivariate analysis, smoking was identified as an independent negative prognostic factor (HR, 1.302; 95% CI, 1.011 - 1.6780, p = 0.041). No difference in prognosis was observed according to smoking conditions in smoking patients. Conclusions: Significent differences exist in clinical features and prognosis between non-smoking and smoking lung adenocarcinoma patients. There is a strong evidence that non-smoking lung adenocarcinoma should be regard as different disease.
Uncommon cavernous malformation of the optic chiasm: a case report

Abstract: Intracranial cavernous malformations (CMs) are not uncommon in the clinic and account for 10 to 20% of intracranial vascular diseases [1]. CMs are usually found in the brain parenchyma, and CMs of the optic chiasm are extremely rare, accounting for <1% of intracranial CMs [2]. The clinical symptoms of chiasmal CMs depend on the lesion size and amount of bleeding. If the CM is large or the volume of bleeding is high, then the chiasmal CM usually elicits stroke symptoms (that is, headache, vision loss and visual field defects) [3,4]. CMs involving the optic chiasm typically cause bilateral temporal visual field defects [5,6]. Here, we describe a case with a CM located on the right side of the optic chiasm, in which the patient presented with bilateral left homonymous hemianopsia in the visual field examination. After definitive diagnosis, the CM was removed surgically with a satisfactory outcome. We further review pertinent literature on the clinical and radiological features and surgical treatment of CMs.A 28-year-old male complained of blurred vision in his right eye, which started 2?months before presentation and had worsened about 10?days before. He was otherwise healthy and had no negative past medical history or history of ocular trauma or surgery. Two months before presentation, the patient visited the Department of Ophthalmology, First Hospital of Jilin University, due to a sudden onset of blurred vision. Eye examination showed no obvious abnormalities, and no exact diagnosis was made. The patient did not return to the clinic until the sudden worsening of blurred vision with forehead pain 10 days before presentation. His best-corrected visual acuity was 0.5 in the right eye and 0.4 in the left eye. Anterior segment slit-lamp examination showed no obvious abnormalities. Abstract: In order to make up for the performance defects of UMP BP-Based decoding algorithm relative to LLR BP decoding algorithm, this paper proposed a modified decoding algorithm.Parameters of the proposed algorithm which combined the advantage of Normalized BP-Based decoding algorithm and Offset BP-Based decoding algorithm were calculated according to minimum mean square error rule. The simulation results show that the LDPC decoding performance of modified UMP BP-Based decoding algorithm is more effective than that of UMP BP-Based decoding algorithm, Normalized BP-Based decoding algorithm and Offset BP-Based decoding algorithm under the same condition of bit error rate.

Abstract: It is necessary to model photovoltaic generation system based power system electromechanical transient time scales for large-scale PV connected to power system stability analysis. The model should reflect the non-linear output characteristics, fault ride-through response characteristics and output limits of photovoltaic generation system. A PV model used to meet these demands is proposed in this paper. Base on a 3-generator, 9-bus power system, the comparison and verification of the model is carried out in both DIgSILENT/PowerFactory and PSASP simulation environment.

Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is the fastest growing part of distributed generation technologies. Large-scale PV power connected to the grid is bound to the safe operation of the grid to bring new problems and challenges in China. Based on PSASP, combined with large-scale PV power access to the actual grid, this article establish PV model, do research on the characteristics of large-scale PV power stations and network system. In this article, the characteristics of PV grid-connected systems, stability and other issues accessing to large-scale PV system are discussed.

Photonic bandgap fiber bundle spectrometer

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber spectrometer consisting of a photonic bandgap fiber bundle and a black and white CCD camera. Photonic crystal fibers used in this work are the large solid core all-plastic Bragg fibers designed for operation in the visible spectral range and featuring bandgaps of 60nm - 180nm-wide. 100 Bragg fibers were chosen to have complimentary and partially overlapping bandgaps covering a 400nm-840nm spectral range. The fiber bundle used in our work is equivalent in its function to a set of 100 optical filters densely packed in the area of ~1cm2. Black and white CCD camera is then used to capture spectrally "binned" image of the incoming light at the output facet of a fiber bundle. To reconstruct the test spectrum from a single CCD image we developed an algorithm based on pseudo-inversion of the spectrometer transmission matrix. We then study resolution limit of this spectroscopic system by testing its performance using spectrally narrow test peaks (FWHM 5nm-25nm) centered at various positions within the 450nm-700nm spectral interval. We find that the peak center wavelength can always be reconstructed within several percent of its true value regardless of the peak width or position. We believe that photonic bandgap fiber bundle-based spectrometers have a potential to become an important technology in multispectral imaging because of their simplicity (lack of moving parts), instantaneous response, and high degree of integration.

Abstract: The influences of W doping at Mn site on the charge order and spin order were studied by measuring M-T curves, M-H curves and ESR spectra of La0.3Ca0.7Mn1 x WxO3 (x = 0.00, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.15) system. The results showed that: When 0.00 x 0.08, the system exhibits charge ordering (CO) phase, and its spin order experiences the change of paramagnetism (PM)-charge ordering (CO)-antiferromagnetism (AFM) with decreasing temperature; when x 0.12, the charge ordering (CO) phase melts, part of charge ordering (CO) phase remains in the paramagnetism (PM) background, the spin order of the system is mainly paramagnetism (PM), and ferromagnetic (FM) clusters appear at low temperature.
