Mild hypothermia alone or in combination with anesthetic post-conditioning reduces expression of inflammatory cytokines in the cerebral cortex of pigs after cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Abstract: Thirty pigs (28 to 34 kg) were subjected to cardiac arrest following temporary coronary artery occlusion. After seven minutes of ventricular fibrillation and two minutes of basic life support, advanced cardiac life support was started according to the current American Heart Association guidelines. Return of spontaneous circulation was achieved in 21 animals who were randomized to either normothermia at 38°C, hypothermia at 33°C or hypothermia at 33°C combined with sevoflurane (each group: n = 7) for 24 hours. The effects of hypothermia and the combination of hypothermia with sevoflurane on cerebral inflammatory response after cardiopulmonary resuscitation were studied using tissue samples from the cerebral cortex of pigs euthanized after 24 hours and employing quantitative RT-PCR and ELISA techniques.Global cerebral ischemia following resuscitation resulted in significant upregulation of cerebral tissue inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression (mean ± SD; interleukin (IL)-1β 8.7 ± 4.0, IL-6 4.3 ± 2.6, IL-10 2.5 ± 1.6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α 2.8 ± 1.8, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) 4.0 ± 1.9-fold compared with sham control) and IL-1β protein concentration (1.9 ± 0.6-fold compared with sham control). Hypothermia was associated with a significant (P < 0.05 versus normothermia) reduction in cerebral inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression (IL-1β 1.7 ± 1.0, IL-6 2.2 ± 1.1, IL-10 0.8 ± 0.4, TNFα 1.1 ± 0.6, ICAM-1 1.9 ± 0.7-fold compared with sham control). These results were also confirmed for IL-1β on protein level. Experimental settings employing hypothermia in combination with sevoflurane showed that the volatile anesthetic did not confer additional anti-inflammatory effects compared with hypothermia alone.Mild therapeutic hypothermia resulted in decreased expression of typical cerebral inflammatory mediators after cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Abstract: This paper explores the effect of teaching mathematics performed with the help of Computer-Supported Concept Maps (CSCM) on the conceptual learning. To achieve this end, CSCM were developed and used in the process of teaching probability subject. Within the true-experimental research method, a pre- and post-test control groups study was conducted with 39 seventh graders—20 in experimental group, and 19 in the control group. Each group was taught three times/week, 40 min/session, for 4 weeks. A 12-item instrument was used to collect data. After the teaching intervention, the same instrument was re-administered to both groups as post-test. The results suggested that students in the experimental group performed significantly better than those in the control group, in terms of conceptual learning.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to compare the effect of activity-based teaching on remedying probability-related misconceptions of students at different grades. Thus, a cross-sectional/age study was conducted with a total of 74 students in 6th-8th grades. Experimental instructions were given to all the groups three times/ week, 40 min/session, for 2 weeks. Students’ progress was examined by pre-test and post-test measurements. The results of the analysis showed that, as a result of the intervention, all graders’ post-test scores regarding all the concepts (PC: Probability Comparison, E: Equiprobability and R: Representativeness) showed a significant increase when compared to pre-test scores. It was found out that this increase did not create a significant difference based on age in PC concept, but that in 8th grade students, it showed a significant difference in E and R concepts compared to 6th graders. On the other hand, it was also assessed that the increases observed between 7th and 8th graders with regard to E and R concepts were not significant. In summary, the implemented intervention can be suggested to have different effects depending on age and the concept.

Abstract: The paper presents ethnological studies of two rural settlements in umadija with the characteristics of agricultural, industrial and mining production. They are typical settlements with all significant elements of traditional Serbian culture, but are undergoing significant changes and modernization. The greatest part of the research was carried out from 1971 to 1975, with the additional researches in 1981 and 1982; the researches deal with the period of the first eight decades of the 20th century. The topics of the research are marriage, family and households, rural cooperatives, village as a socio-economical and ceremonial-religious community, elements of law related to rural life. Since 1980, the phenomena of retraditionalization have been observed in rural life.
SO2 oxidation products other than H2SO4 as a trigger of new particle formation – Part 1: Laboratory investigations

Abstract: Mechanistic investigations of atmospheric H2SO4 particle formation have been performed in a laboratory study taking either H2SO4 from a liquid reservoir or using the gas-phase reaction of OH radicals with SO2. Applying both approaches for H2SO4 generation simultaneously we found that H2SO4 evaporated from the liquid reservoir acts considerably less effective for the process of particle formation and growth than the products originating from the reaction of OH radicals with SO2. Furthermore, for NOx concentrations >5×1011 molecule cm 3 the formation of new particles from the reaction of OH radicals with SO2 is inhibited. This suggests that substances other than H2SO4 (likely products from sulphur-containing peroxy radicals) trigger lower tropospheric new particle formation and growth. The currently accepted mechanism for SO2 gas-phase oxidation does not consider the formation of such substances making a revision necessary.
The Effectiveness of the Functional Magnetic Stimulation Therapy in Treating Sciatica Syndrome  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Degenerative or traumatic causes are most common in generating sciatica syndrome, which is normally treated with well-known physical therapy methods. A relatively new way of treating sciatica problems is so-called functional magnetic stimulation (FMS), whose principle is based on electromagnetic field inducing electrical field inside the body. Electrical field triggers action potential of nerve cells and that way stimulates peripheral motor nerve system. Aim: Aim of this study is to measure and estimate the effectiveness of implementing therapy with functional magnetic stimulation in regular physical treatment of sciatica syndrome. Materials and Methods: 28 male patients aged between 30 and 55 with back problem were recruited on an outpatient basis. FMS therapy was performed with TESLA Stym? device (Iskra Medical d.o.o., Slovenia) treating lumbosacral region equally on both sides of the spine. Physical examination was performed to evaluate tree parameters: the mobility of the lumbar spine in flexion and extension, together with the straight leg raise test (Lasegue sign). We estimated patients’ progress, comparing angle values of mobility from the first examination day with other examination days. Results: In FMS treated group of patients, lumbosacral flexion, extension and Lasegue test angle were significantly higher compared to day 0 on the first physical examination day (day 3) (p < 0.05). In control group such increase of a measured angle was not noticed until a second physical examination day (day 5) or a third physical examination day (day 8) (p < 0.05). Discussion: Results in this study showed that applying FMS therapy along with other standard physical therapy methods rapidly increased effectiveness of the treatment of sciatica syndrome (lat. ischialgia). It suggests that functional magnetic therapy could be suggested as a regular physical therapy method in treating this kind of pain syndromes.

Dépassant l’opposition fiction-réalité, le Nouveau Cinéma Latino-américain promeut un cinéma de critique sociale grace à des récits dont les formes varient, mais qui tous contestent la réalité de la domination impérialiste et plaident pour une réhabilitation des cultures et des identités réprimées. Ces nouveaux créateurs, engagés dans la lutte de libération de leurs peuples, sont à l’origine d’ uvres ouvertes , destinées à être poursuivies et achevées par l’action des nouveaux spectateurs latino-américains. El artículo aborda la incidencia del documental en el Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de las décadas del ’60 y principios de los ’70. Superando la dicotomía ficción-realidad, y en una gran diversidad de discursos, el Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano impulsó un cine crítico, de sentido social, en relatos que niegan la realidad de la dominación imperialista y proponen recuperar culturas e identidades colectivas avasalladas. Estos nuevos enunciadores comprometidos con las luchas de liberación de sus pueblos, crearon “obras abiertas” que se completarían y articularían con la acción de nuevos espectadores latinoamericanos.

Abstract: Infrastructures, businesses, end-users and services offered in the digitally integrated environment are exposed to a wide range of risks such as denial of service, hacking, phishing, ransomware, viruses, etc. Consequently, along with their physical life, individuals and organizations have to secure their digital life as well. Digital threats may have a major economic impact both on the individuals and the society, through the direct loss of income and/or property or even an indirect reduction of the individuals’ contribution back to the society and the state. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of cyber-attacks to the economy, to price the associated cost and to recommend possible measures that internet service providers (ISPs) and policy makers can apply in order to mitigate these risks. In order to achieve that, we employ insurance (actuarial) pricing techniques to calculate the cost of cyber-attacks for an individual and for the economy of a country in total. We are therefore at the same time in place to recommend insurance coverage solutions that can assist in protecting the entity of interest from cyber risks. This resembles to the calculation of a risk premium, as the premium is calculated taking into account only the probability of occurrence of a cyber-attack and the interest rate and not any other loadings. In this context, we mimic the pricing of a policy that provides coverage for the cyber-attack, as well as the calculation of the amount that has to be set aside in order to compensate for the one-off economic loss suffered by the individual, as a result of its occurrence. Here lies our contribution to the scientific research in the field of cyber security insurance, as we employ insurance-based actuarial techniques in order to quantify the relevant loss.
