Pneumococcal endocarditis of subacute evolution
Uemura, Laercio;Grassi, Newton César;Cazarin, Luciane;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2001000400006
Abstract: with the development of penicillin, streptococcus pneumoniae has become an uncommon cause of bacterial endocarditis in adults. subacute manifestation of pneumococcal endocarditis has been reported a few times in the literature, but most reports define the disease as acute, severe, and having a high mortality rate. we report the case of a 58-year-old male with subacute bacterial endocarditis due to streptococcus pneumoniae. we stress the low frequency of this agent as a cause of endocarditis and the atypical evolution of this case. the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and evolution, and the therapeutical options for this type of infection are also discussed.
Universidade Corporativa: (Pré-) tendência do Ensino Superior ou amea?a?
Silva, Marco Wandercil da;Balzan, Newton César;
Avalia??o: Revista da Avalia??o da Educa??o Superior (Campinas) , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-40772007000200004
Abstract: the purpose of the present paper is to reveal some ideological implications of the recent phenomenon called corporate university (cu) relating to the formal higher education, within a setting of political, social and economical transformations intrinsic to neo-liberalism. the expansion of this modality of education indicates a demand for a new educational model and, at the same time, seems to reveal, as will be presented here, an underlying aspect of competition, since the cu wishes to attract to itself a "clientele" of students, creating programs exclusively dedicated to the labor market. thus, emerges a silent battle in which are opposed, on one hand, the companies, through the cus, and on the other hand, the traditional universities. therefore, our main question would be: how will this traditional university react to the requirements and changes originated by corporative education, clearly contradictory to its own functions? we ponder that the knowledge spread by cus does not contemplate the human being in a broader educational sense, and is but another lucrative strategy of the business organizations, in which the term "university" is privileged instead of "training center" - a designation that seems to be more appropriate to the cus studied in this research - and the knowledge is trivialized, without taking into account, during the education of each worker-student, the awareness of his role in society.
Avalia??o de projeto político-pedagógico pelos funcionários: espa?os e representatividade

Avalia??o: Revista da Avalia??o da Educa??o Superior (Campinas) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-40772008000300007
Abstract: research based on different purposes and focuses suggest that the formal education process cannot be reduced to the classroom environment and must also take place through articulated action between all educational participants. concerned with the low level of participation of staff members in the elaboration of a political-pedagogical project and taking into account the fact that discussions have not focused on peripheral aspects of the pedagogical process, this paper was originated from a broader quali-quantitative research in the field of institutional evaluation and aims at reflecting about the space of the political-pedagogical project in a university and its academic units, based on the representation and evaluation of this project by the staff.

Abstract: this article offers some evaluative considerations of the results of a doctorate thesis entitled "programa de forma??ocontinuada para docentes do ensino superior: um estudo de caso" (continuing education program for higher education teachers: a case study), carried out at the universidade do vale do itajaí (university of vale do itajaí) - univali, in itajaí, santa catarina, and presented at the school of education of the universidade estadual de campinas - unicamp, in campinas, state of s?o paulo, in november 2007. the methodology used in the research was a case study, by means of a narrative. the article is divided into four sections. the first section outlines the context of the institution that developed the program and the program itself in its first edition. the second presents the research methodology used and the data analysis. the third addresses the results of the case study, and the fourth section evaluates the results obtained. at the end, some considerations are made that point to the importance of further studies on the state- of- the- art in the area of continuing education for higher education teachers, seeking to characterize the identity of the teaching professional, at the national level, particularly based on the knowledge and activities of these programs.

Accrual Anomaly in the Brazilian Capital Market

BAR. Brazilian Administration Review , 2012,
Abstract: This paper analyzes the phenomenon known as accrual anomaly in Brazil. In particular, we examine two hypotheses: (a) that the earnings expectation included in the stock price fails to reflect the difference in persistence of the earnings components (accruals and cash flows); and (b) that the construction of a hedge portfolio by taking a long (short) position in assets with low (high) accruals generates consistently abnormal returns. The data set includes nonfinancial firms listed on the BM&FBOVESPA between 1990 and 2008. The empirical tests required conducting panel data regressions to identify the persistence of earnings and theircomponents; the Mishkin test to identify whether the market rationally prices earnings; and the composition of a zero-investment (hedge) portfolio to analyze whether a trading strategy based on accruals consistently provides abnormal positive returns. The results indicate that the accrual component is not mispriced by the Brazilian market, and that a trading strategy based on accruals does not provide consistently positive returns. Although this evidence does not encourage arbitrage, the results are relevant from various perspectives. The methodology applied permitted identifying the quality of earnings and of their components, as well as association between the components of earnings and returns.
Is there a relationship between accounting and stock market returns in Brazil?
Newton Carneiro Affonso da Costa Jr.,Roberto Meurer,César Medeiros Cupertino
Revista Brasileira de Finan?as , 2007,
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between accounting and stock market returns of Brazilian companies on a quarterly basis. The sample consisted of 97 companies with stocks traded in the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange from January of 1995 to March of 2007. A Granger causality test was applied to the two return series for each of the sampled companies. The results of the causality tests suggested that there is weak evidence that accounting returns lead stock market returns rather than the reverse.

Abstract: the diversification of cultivars and purposes of wheat crop may alter the information management system of crop-livestock integration. therefore, this research has the objective to verify the performance of dual purpose wheat with different cutting regimes and seeding density. the whet cultivate used were: 'brs figueira', 'brs guatambu', 'brs tarum?' and 'brs umbu'. the seeding density was of 50, 200, 350, 500 and 650 seeds for square meter. the phitomorfological and production variables have a different performance depending on as cultivar, management and seeding density. the cultivar 'figueira' has the highest productive potential yield within the range of densities analyzed for dry mater production in relation to other cultivars the grain yield had significant interaction between cultivars and management (with and without cutting). the cultivars with higher grain yields were, respectively, 'figueira', 'umbu', 'tarum?' and 'guatambu' in managing blunt, already in the court system the cultivar 'tarum?' was the one that had the highest grain yield, differing from the others. the most high and significant correlations occurred in plots with and without cutting. the court dropped all values of yield components, and grain yield of all cultivars.
Domínios geomorfológicos na área de ocorrência dos depósitos de espongilito da regi?o de Jo?o Pinheiro, Minas Gerais, Brasil

Abstract: important erosive processes that took place after the cretaceous era were responsible for the evolution of the landscape in the jo?o pinheiro region where spongillite deposits occur. the progression of these erosive processes on the carbonate rocks led to the development of negative karstic features where the ponds present formed the spongillite deposits. based on field studies and analysis of multispectral images, four geomorphological domains were identified: i) domain 1, represented by a plateau related to sandstones from the areado group that present the highest altitudes in the area; ii) domain 2, that constitutes a desiccated area related to pelites from the areado group; iii) domain 3, comprising a karstic planation surface associated with carbonate rocks from the bambui group and pré-bambuí unit covered by cenozoic sediments where the ponds occur; iv) domain 4, composed of gutter shaped valleys enclosing meandering of underfit streams (of the prata and paracatu rivers). these valleys cut through the karstic planation surface (domain 3) where pleistocene sediments occur and characterize the more recent morphological domain.
