The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of one or two doses of the anti-rabies vaccination on the serum concentration of cortisol and the humoral immune response in cattle as well as the correlation between serum cortisol concentrations and the titers of rabies-neutralizing antibodies. Nelore cattle were randomly assigned to one of three groups, which were vaccinated with one dose of rabies vaccine (group GVSR, N = 15), two doses of rabies vaccine (group GVR, N = 15) or were not vaccinated (group Gc, N = 15). A commercial liquid inactivated rabies vaccine was used. The stressors imposed on the cattle were vaccination, corral handling and the presence of people. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 30 and 60 post-vaccination. Serum cortisol concentrations were determined using a solid-phase radioimmunoassay, and rabies antibody titers were determined using a serum neutralization test with BHK21 cells (RFFIT). Both serum cortisol concentrations and antibody titers increased after the second (booster) vaccination (P < 0.05). In all the groups, the serum cortisol concentrations increased after the cattle were handled in the corral (P < 0.05). No correlation was observed between the serum cortisol concentrations and the antibody titers with any treatment or on any observation day. In conclusion, booster vaccination is indispensable for primovaccinated cattle in achieving high and protective levels of rabies antibodies. Although booster vaccination and frequent cattle handling in corrals are stressors, the response is not strong enough to cause immunosuppression in cattle.

Abstract: the purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of carbon and nitrogen in 17%cr ferritic stainless steels (16%cr-0.04%c-0.032%n; 17.2%cr-0.02%c-0.0062%n; 18.5%cr-0.008%c-0.0213%n) on the degree of sensitization (dos). these steels were solution annealed at 1200°c and quenched in water. isothermal treatments were carried out at 600°c between 5 minutes and 16 hours. the double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation test (dl-epr) was carried out in a 0.5m h2so4 solution at (25 ± 2)°c. the dos was evaluated using a ratio between maximum anodic current density in reversion, ir, and activation, ia. the microstructural examination of specimens was carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy after metallographic etching with vilella's reagent. the results showed a dos variation with time. maximum values of dos were obtained for each steel, followed by its reduction. the intensity of dos and its kinetics vary in function of the carbon and nitrogen content in steels.

Abstract: the deleterious effects of mn stress on many species have been studied, mainly concerning biochemical, physiological and growth parameters of plants. however, there are few studies relating the anatomical and ultrastructural changes in response to manganese (mn) nutritional disorders, this study examined the leaf ultrastructure of mn-inefficient (iac-15, santa rosa) and mn-efficient (iac-foscarin 31) soybean (glycine max l.) genotypes in response to three rates of mn (0.5, 2 and 200 μmol l-1) in the nutrient solution. symptoms of mn deficiency developed 12 days after transplanting in iac-15 and santa rosa, followed by iac-foscarin 31 on the 15th day. only iac-15 and santa rosa leaves showed symptoms of mn toxicity. the mn concentration in leaves ranged from 8.6 (deficiency) to 886.3 mg kg-1 d.w. (toxicity). there were no changes either in stomata length or stomata number per unit of leaf surface. cytoplasm disorganization was observed in iac-15 under mn-excess. in this case, the cytoplasm was amorphous, densely stained and extensively disorganized, with increased vacuolation. mn effects were not found in mitochondria and nucleus in any of the genotypes tested. under all mn concentrations, many lipid globules were observed in the iac15 chloroplasts. there was an increase in the number of plastids as well as in the size of starch grains within iac-foscarin 31 chloroplasts as mn concentration in the nutrient solution increased. genotypes had marked differences in the ultrastructure organization, mainly in leaf chloroplasts grown under conditions of both mn deficiency and toxicity (the most sensitive genotype was iac-15).
Simulium (Psaroniocompsa) tergospinosum new species (Diptera: Simuliidae) in siolii group from the southern part of the State of Amazonas, Brazil
Hamada, Neusa;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762000000600012
Abstract: the larva, pupa, male and female of simulium tergospinosum n. sp. are described and illustrated. the adults of this new species share many characters with species in the subgenus psaroniocompsa, where it is placed. the larva of this species bears dorsal and lateral triangular tubercles on the abdomen and multiply branched scale-like setae on the body, suggesting that it belongs to the s. siolii species group. s. tergospinosum n.sp. was collected along the juma river, apuí county, in the southern part of the state of amazonas, brazil. the juma, a black-water river, is a tributary of the aripuan? river in the madeira river hydrographic basin, on the southern part of amazonas. females were collected biting humans along the water courses during the sampling period (in the dry season).
Aspectos ecológicos de Simulium goeldii (Diptera: Simuliidae): rela??o entre substrato e densidade de larvas
Hamada, Neusa;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1989, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761989000800046
Abstract: the distribution of larvae of simulium goeldii was studies in four streams in upland tropical forest near manaus, amazonas, brazil. in each month 32 points were sampled, each with an area of 30 x 50 cm. the areas of all substrates available were measured at each point. the larvae of s. goeldii were collected and later counted for all substrate types where larvae of this species were found. the available substrates were classified into eight types: dry leaves, green leaves, branches, fruits, detritus, rocks and sand; anly the first four types had larvae present. the kruskal-wallis test and analysis of variance indicated that the larvae occupy these substrates differently; the newman-keuls identified the following differences in intensity of occupation of the susbstrates: branchs differ from roots, dry leaves and green leaves, and green leaves differ from roots and dry leaves. the highest density of larvae was observed on green leaves. however, because the most abundant substrates in the study area were roots and dry leaves, i suggest that the latter two substrates are the most important ones for the esteblishment of this population of s. goeldii.
