Proen?a, Nelson Guimares;Michalany, Nilceo;
Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0365-05962006000900002
Abstract: the authors present two cases of epidermolytic acanthoma of the scrotum in two men who are 52 and 68 years old, with 21 and 5 lesions, respectively, all asymptomatic. pathological analysis was characteristic, showing epidermal hyperplasia with epidermolytic alterations of the superior layers of the stratum spinosum, extending up to the granular layer. such cases have not been published in brazil. they were registered with the purpose of calling attention of dermatologists and urologists to a disease that does not seem so rare as it has been claimed to be.
The taxonomy of Brazilian insects vectors of transmissible diseases (1900-2000) - then and now
Papavero, Nelson;Guimares, José Henrique;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762000000700019
Abstract: a brief historical overview is given of the most relevant taxonomic studies of insect groups vectors of transmissible diseases in brazil, from the "heroic" times of the foundation of the instituto oswaldo cruz in rio de janeiro up to the present. the following orders are considered: phthiraptera (anoplura, amblycera and ischnocera), hemiptera (reduviidae: triatominae), siphonaptera and diptera (culicidae, ceratopogonidae, psychodidae: phlebotominae, simuliidae, tabanidae, chloropidae and muscidae). the most important brazilian collections of each group are cited.

Abstract: a microepidemic outbreak of american mucocutaneous leishmaniasis occurred at the beginning of 1978 in the "serra da cantareira", s. paulo, brazil. the persistence of some of the niche is commented on.

Brito, Benito Guimares de;Filippsen, Laerte Francisco;Mores, Nelson;
Ciência Rural , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84781995000300018
Abstract: the main risk factors that interfered on the performance of post weaning piglets were identified in nine farms from southwest of paraná state, brazil, during the summer and winter of 1991. all the herd were evaluated, with at least 30 piglets per farm, from weaning up to 21 days after weaning. the software ecopor was used to evaluate three target variables (mortality, diarrhea and average daily gain), and seven explanatory variables (average weaning weight, weight variation coefficient, thermal amplitude, sow energy consumption, water potability, diahrrea in the suckling period and housing density). the risk factors with higher frequency were daily thermal amplitude higher than 6°c, bacterial contamination of the drinking water, and the occurrence of diarrhea in the suckling period. im more than 50% of the farms, low mean gain and differences in litter size were observed. based on the analyses of the risk factors, a map classifying regions with different risk of post weaning diarrhea was constructed and the farms were allocated.
As miíases na regi?o neotropical (identifica??o, biologia, bibliografia)
Guimares, José Henrique;Papavero, Nelson;Prado, ?ngelo Pires do;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 1982, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81751982000400001
Abstract: data are given on the identification, biology, ecology, hosts, geographical distribution, control, and other aspects of the myiasis-producing flies in the neotropical region. the bibliography contains almost 2400 references, mainly related to cochliomyia (ca. 1170 references), cuterebridae (with the exception of dematobia hominis (over 390 references), and to dermatobia hominis (over 520 references). for cuterebridae and cochliomyia the bibliography covers the américas; for ali other groups it is restricted to the neotropics.

Abstract: background: chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory disease, which albeit relatively frequent, has been the object of few studies. objective: to characterize the epidemiological and clinical aspects of patients with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, with a view to comparing the data obtained with the world literature. patients and methods: a retrospective study was done on 290 patients with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus from 1982 to 1996, attended at the dermatology clinic of hospital santa casa de sao paulo. results: the mean age at onset of the disease was 32.3 years, there was a female prevalence in relation to males (3.4:1), most of the patients had lesions located in the cephalic segment (58.3%). regarding the clinical types, there was a prevalence of the typical discoid plaque in 90.4% of cases, followed by the verrucous or hypertrophic forms (7.9%), erythematous lupus pernio (1.4%) and tumid (0.3%). lesions in the mucous membranes or transition epithelia occurred in 27.2% of the patients. conclusions: chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus is a disease more frequent in adult women and the most common lesion is the typical discoid plaque. mucous lesions occurred in approximately one fourth of the cases.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2002000100025
Abstract: we report the case of a white male infant, 2 months-old, with tremor and hypertonia since 15th day of life transferred to our service and diagnosed as seizures. investigation showed hypocalcaemia (4 mg/dl) and hypomagnesemia (1.6 mg/dl) and the infant's serum metabolic disturb was corrected by intravenous calcium gluconate and magnesium sulphate, but attempted to "wean" him from intravenous treatment led to a relapse of hypocalcemia. at this time hypoparathyroidism was suspected and the additional investigation confirmed this suspect ion. the neurologic examination revealed an irritable patient with marked extensor hypertonia and opisthotonos. cranial ct and mri scans were normal, but the eeg exam showed severe abnormalities. the infant was given the oral calcium gluconate, magnesium chloride and colecalciferol daily to maintain a normal calcium concentration, but the control was very difficult. the patient had an extend hospitalization of 6 months and death was due to repetitive infection. we discuss the clinical findings, imaging, eeg exam, differential diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.
Influence of a protein concentrate used as a fat substitute on the quality of cheese bread
Clareto, Silvia Silveira;Nelson, David Lee;Pereira, Accácia Júlia Guimares;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132006000700020
Abstract: the effects of the use of a protein concentrate as a fat substitute on the quality of cheese bread were investigated. based on a 10% basic fat formulation, the substitution of 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the oil in the formula was tested. physical characteristics were measured, and sensorial parameters were determined. the products with lower levels of fat substitute had higher levels of acceptability. with the increase in the degree of substitution, the cheese bread products were harder, had a thicker crust and presented a less pleasant appearance, less pronounced cheese flavor and a lower degree of acceptance. the use of a fat substitute resulted in a product with a significantly lower fat content and a caloric reduction greater than 25%.
