Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922011000300010
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate physical fitness of le parkour practitioners in the city of curitiba-pr. 13 male subjects (19.46 ± 2.82 years) who have been practicing the activity for more than six months participated in the study. anthropometry and tests of physical fitness (back-and-forth 20-meter running, 1-minute abdominal, flexion and extension of the arms, vertical and horizontal push, sit-and-reach test and wingate) were performed. the results were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and are classified based on the reference tables for each test. after evaluating the vo2max, 53.85% of the practitioners were considered "low fitness" and 46.15% presented adequate cardiorespiratory fitness. regarding strength /abdominal resistance, 46.15% of subjects were classified as "low fitness" and 53.85% as "recommended range". the peak power and average power were considered as "regular" in all subjects. the fatigue index was greater than or equal in 54% of subjects. flexibility was assessed as "low fitness" in 69.23% of the sample. assessment of strength / endurance of upper limbs presented 84.62% in the "recommended range". the results from this study suggest that le parkour, as an acyclic activity with emphasis on jumping and activities of strength in arms, led best values on tests of dynamic horizontal, vertical and strength of upper limbs. meanwhile the other variables were below average, which should be considered in the prescription of exercises and the monitoring of individuals during the activity's practice. further studies with larger samples and training control le parkour practitioners are suggested.

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2015.62019
Abstract: Critical situations that cannot be solved by conventional approaches (traditional air quality monitoring networks), have the possibility of being managed quickly by a wide network of portable systems with sensors. The purpose of this research was to calibrate and validate low-cost sensors. Pilot indoor and outdoor areas, in the central area of Brasilia (Brazil’s capital city) were chosen for corporative performance evaluation of the sensors. The CO at 99.999% volumetric injection method has been used in a gas test box, among two MiCS-5521 (CO/VOC) sensors, one being new and the other one with a short useful life. The number of injections adopted to each volume (from 1 ml to 6 ml) was 10, rising each sensor’s confidence interval mean. A increase of the injected volume (ml) of CO resulted in significant decrease in a resistance (Ohms), as shown by a good inverse relationship on the interaction of these two variables (r = 0.88), with good measurement accuracy, when compared to the manufacturer’s reference datasheet. Finally, a geospatial management system was built for the pollution data measured by the low-cost sensors.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of aquatic exercise and nutritionalguidance on the body composition of obese children and adolescents. Thirty obese childrenaged 10 to 16 years, with a body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile according to theclassification proposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2000), weredivided into two groups: the first group started learning to swim (GSwim, n = 10) and the secondgroup underwent a deep water running program (GDeep, n = 20). Weight, height, BMI, BMIZ-scores, relative and absolute fat, and relative and absolute lean body mass were evaluated atbaseline and after 12 weeks. The program consisted of 12 meetings for nutritional guidance (oncea week) and 36 sessions of exercise (three times per week). MANOVA and Fisher’s exact testwere used for statistical analysis, with the level of significance set at p < 0.05. After 12 weeks,GDeep showed a significant reduction in BMI, BMI Z-scores and relative and absolute fat,and an increase in relative and absolute lean body mass. Significant differences were observedbetween GDeep and GSwim in terms of the reduction in body fat (p = 0.014) and the increasein lean mass (p = 0.006). A program of deep water running together with nutritional guidancemay promote significant changes in the body composition of obese children and adolescents dueto the cyclic characteristic of this physical activity.
