Spacial and Temporal Variation of Degradation of Organic Matter by Benthic Macroinvertebrates  [PDF]
Ana Ribeiro, Natividade Vieira
Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2013.411A001

Leaf litter input from riparian landscapes has been identified as both a major energy flow to stream ecosystems and as a food source for stream macroinvertebrates. In this study the benthic macroinvertebrate community was used to evaluate the decomposition of organic matter in river systems. The aim of this work was to study the decomposition of organic matter using the benthic macroinvertebrate colonization. The research was developed over five months (January 2011 to May 2011) in four different sites, distributed along the River Ferreira terminal area, northern Portugal. A litter bag experiment was used to examine the role of macroinvertebrate communities in the processing of organic material on the river. Litter bags were placed in the water and collected every 7, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. In litter bags was observed a high abundance of Oligochaeta and Chironomidae, which are characterized by being detritivorous-herbivores and filtering collectors, respectively, indicating the benthic macroinvertebrate more involved on the decomposition of organic matter. These results contributed to increase current knowledge about benthic macroinvertebrate communities and may serve as incentive for future research works.

Artisanal salt production in Aveiro/Portugal - an ecofriendly process
Carolina M Rodrigues, Ana Bio, Francisco Amat, Natividade Vieira
Aquatic Biosystems , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1746-1448-7-3
Abstract: It is, however, possible to generate revenue from salinas at several levels, not merely in terms of good quality salt production, but also by obtaining other products that can be commercialized, or by exploring their potential for tourism, and as research facilities, among others. Furthermore, with an adequate management, biodiversity can be restored to abandoned salinas, which constitute important feeding and breeding grounds for resident and migratory aquatic birds, many of which are protected by European Community Directives. The aims of this manuscript are to present a brief overview on the current state of sea salt exploitation in Portugal and to stress the importance of recovering these salinas for the conservation of this particular environment, for the regional economy, the scientific community and the general public. The Aveiro salina complex is presented in detail, to exemplify salina structure and functioning, as well as current problems and potential solutions for artisanal salinas.Portugal, with its extensive coastline exposed to hot and dry winds and constantly high temperatures during summer, has always shown favourable conditions for the development of salinas that use the renewable eolic and solar energies to produce salt. The country has a privileged geographical situation for salt production, in comparison to other European and even non-European countries [1]. In Portugal, salt production through solar evaporation of sea water was introduced by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC [2] and, during the Roman period, salt must have been intensively exploited, as there are abundant archaeological remains of fish salting settlements in several places in southern Portugal. In the beginning of the 10th century, the exploitation of salt, along the northern coastline, between the Minho and Vouga rivers, was already prospering [3]. In the 12th century, even before the Portuguese maritime expansion, Portuguese salt was regarded as a high-quality product in v
Uma homossexualidade santificada?: Etnografia de uma comunidade inclusiva pentecostal
Natividade, Marcelo;
Religi?o & Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-85872010000200006
Abstract: this article examines the movement of churches in brazil that call themselves "inclusionary", and identified in the media between 1990 and 2000 as "gay churches." it focuses on the rise of the metropolitan community church in brazil - a well-known activist denomination created in 1968 in the united states and its transformation into the contemporary christian church. it analyzes how this church established itself based on local influences and a dialog with ideas from hegemonic religious systems. the paper argues that the implantation of this group encompasses regional variations provided by notions that come from the passages and mediations realized by the subjects between their communities of origin and their adhesion to a new religious alternative. it examines some models and images of homosexuality cultivated and produced in this plural movement.

Abstract: this article discourses the configuration of the professional identity of the military firemen from the region of the greater florianópolis, sc. to contemplate such general objective, the specific objectives and the theoretical referencial focused on: characterization of the profession, identity, work, professional choice and quality of life. as method, the research was defined as exploratory and descriptive, delineated as a survey. an half-open questionnaire was used. the data was analyzed in a qualitative and quantitative form. participated in the research, 266 "pra?as" of the 1st firemen battalion. with this research, it was possible to conclude that these professionals feel themselves carried through with their profession although complaints exist, which are not on the content of the profession, but on the lack of conditions to fulfil it and on organizacional aspects. these citizens "live" the profession even outside their working hours. it was also possible to verify that, as well as the theories affirm, the work is a constituent factor of the identity of the citizen.

Best approximation with wavelets in weighted Orlicz spaces
Maria de Natividade
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: Democracy functions of wavelet admissible bases are computed for weighted Orlicz Spaces in terms of its fundamental function. In particular, we prove that these bases are greedy if and only if the Orlicz space is a Lebesgue space. Also, sharp embeddings for the approximation spaces are given in terms of weighted discrete Lorentz spaces. For Lebesgue spaces the approximation spaces are identified with weighted Besov spaces.
