Quantitative Microbiological Evaluation of Salmonella Typhimurium Shed in Diarrhea, Loose, and Normal Stools of Infected Pigs  [PDF]

Abstract:

Control of within-herd transmission of Salmonella is important for reducing the prevalence of this organism on pig farms and for preventing Salmonella-contamination of pork. At the farm level, understanding the within-herd transmission of Salmonella can lead to more effective control. Salmonella infection is dependent on the inoculation dose; hence, quantitative evaluation of Salmonella shed in feces would provide useful information for developing effective measures. In this study, to reproduce and evaluate the number of Salmonella shed in diarrhea, loose stools, and normal feces, weaned pigs were inoculated with 3.2 × 109, 3.2 × 107, and 3.2 × 105 cfu of Salmonella Typhimurium, respectively. The number of S. Typhimurium shed in the feces peaked within 1 week post-inoculation in every group and the most amount of diarrhea and loose stools were observed within 2 weeks post-inoculation. Diarrhea occurred 10 times (six pigs), and loose stools were observed 25 times (11 pigs). The average concentration of S. Typhimurium shed in diarrhea, loose stools, and normal feces was 1.0 × 108, 1.6 × 104, and 7.1 × 10

Abstract: In order to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Mentholatumò AP Soft Lotion (APA), which is a Vaseline-based preparation that has been converted to nanoparticles by high-pressure emulsification technology, we conducted a study of 4-week continuous use on the atopic dry skin of patients with minor to moderate atopic dermatitis (AD). The results showed that improvements in the skin findings (dryness and scaling) and itching were observed beginning one week after starting to apply APA and that the symptoms had almost completely resolved at 3 to 4 weeks after the start of application. In addition, a significant increase in the degree of high-frequency conductivity, which is an indicator of the amount of moisture in the stratum corneum, and significant decrease in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were observed, and improvements in skin functions were observed. The results for overall degree of improvement showed “improvement” or better in 100% of the subjects, and no side effects were observed in any of the cases. Based on the above results, it was concluded that APA is a preparation that has excellent efficacy and safety as skin care for atopic dry skin, in which reduced stratum corneum function is observed in the skin, and as a supplemental method of treatment of AD or treatment method to maintain remissions.

Abstract:

We propose a valuation for the bond in which an issuer and a holder are simultaneously granted the right to exercise a call and put options. As the term structure model of interest rate, we use the Generalized Ho-Lee model that is an arbitrage-free binomial lattice interest rate model. The issuer and the holder play a series of stage games in each exercisable node on the lattice whose payoff structure is dependent on the nodes. We formulate the valuation problem as a stochastic game or a Markov game. Our stochastic games possess saddle points in pure strategies for each stage game. We derive the optimality equation to solve backwardly the bond values and the exercise strategies from the maturity to the initial time. Our numerical results are useful to intuitively understand the risk to a change of interest rates for options embedded in bond.

Abstract: Structural characteristic of surface soil ground has great effect on the ground motion amplitude when earthquake happens. Recent studies in Japan on seismic zonings use a database that covers entire Japan with 1 km mesh size, which is useful for prefecture scale researches. However, it is hard, even with 500 m or 250 m mesh sizes to consider a city, a county or award as scale studies. Kanagawa Prefecture is highly urbanized and vulnerable to seismic disaster. The prefecture suffered a wide spread damage during the 1923 Kanto earthquake. In this paper, we deploy a very fine mesh 50 × 50 m mesh to develop a general seismic intensity map useful for micro scale disaster management for local governments and educational information for earthquake preparedness promotion. In this paper, first we prepared two detailed databases for 50 × 50 m mesh size over entire Kanagawa Prefecture. One was for geologic formations and the other the geomorphologic condition. Then these databases were used for preparation of high-resolution digital soil classification maps for 15 categories of micro landforms of prefecture. The later database was used for mapping the site amplification factors for 50 × 50 m mesh by applying the empirical relations for AVS30. We could create a GIS platform with sufficient accuracy to consider potential risk analysis.

Abstract: We present an extended version of max-plus algebra which includes the inverse operator of "max". This algebra enables us to ultra-discretize the system including subtractions and obtain new ultra-discrete equations. The known ultra-discrete equations can also be recovered by this construction.
Multi-Instanton Effect in Two Dimensional QCD

Abstract: We analyze multi-instanton sector in two dimensional U(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere. We obtain a contour intregrals representation of the multi-instanton amplitude and find ``neutral'' configurations of the even number instantons are dominant in the large N limit. Using this representation, we calculate 1,2,3,4 bodies interactions and the free energies for $N =3,4,5$ numerically and find that in fact the multi-instanton interaction effect essentially contribute to the large N phase transition discovered by Douglas and Kazakov.
Neutral Multi-Instanton as a Bridge from Weak to Strong Coupling phase in Two Dimensional QCD

Abstract: Using a contour integral representation we analyze the multi-instanton sector in two dimensional $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a sphere and argue the role of multi-instanton in the large $N$ phase transition. In the strong coupling region at the large $N$ , we encounter ``singular saddle point''. Because of this situation, ``neutral'' configurations of the multi-instanton are dominant in this region. Based on the ``neutral'' multi-instanton approximation we numerically calculate the multi-instanton amplitude , the free energies and the Wilson loops for finite $N$ . We also compare our results with the large $N$ exact solution of the free energy and the Wilson loop and argue some problems. We find the ``neutral'' multi-instanton contribution bridges the gap between weak and strong coupling phase.

Gapless surface states in a three-dimensional Chalker-Coddington type network model

Abstract: We present the emergence of gapless surface states in a three-dimensional Chalker-Coddington type network model with spatial periodicity. The model consists of a ring network placed on every face of the cubic unit cells in the simple cubic lattice. The scattering among ring-propagating modes in the adjacent rings is described by the S-matrices, which control possible symmetries of the system. The model maps to a Floquet-Bloch system, and the quasienergy spectrum can exhibit a gapped bulk band structure and gapless surface states. Symmetry properties of the system and robustness of the gapless surface states are explored in comparison to topological crystalline insulator. We also discuss other crystal structures, a gauge symmetry, and a possible optical realization of the network model.
