Soluble Isoform of the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End Products as a Biomarker for Postoperative Respiratory Failure after Cardiac Surgery

Abstract: Purpose Postoperative respiratory failure is a major problem which can prolong the stay in the intensive care unit in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We measured the serum levels of the soluble isoform of the receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE), and we studied its association with postoperative respiratory failure. Methods Eighty-seven patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery were enrolled in this multicenter observational study in three university hospitals. Serum biomarker levels were measured perioperatively, and clinical data were collected for 7 days postoperatively. The duration of mechanical ventilation was studied for 28 days. Results Serum levels of sRAGE elevated immediately after surgery (median, 1751 pg/mL; interquartile range (IQR) 1080–3034 pg/mL) compared with the level after anesthetic induction (median, 884 pg/mL; IQR, 568–1462 pg/mL). Postoperative sRAGE levels in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (median, 1193 pg/mL; IQR 737–1869 pg/mL) were significantly lower than in patients undergoing aortic surgery (median, 1883 pg/mL; IQR, 1406–4456 pg/mL; p = 0.0024) and valve surgery (median, 2302 pg/mL; IQR, 1447–3585 pg/mL; p = 0.0005), and postoperative sRAGE correlated moderately with duration of cardiopulmonary bypass (rs = 0.44, p<0.0001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis demonstrated that postoperative sRAGE had a predictive performance with area under the curve of 0.81 (95% confidence interval 0.71–0.88) for postoperative respiratory failure, defined as prolonged mechanical ventilation >3 days. The optimum cutoff value for prediction of respiratory failure was 3656 pg/mL, with sensitivity and specificity of 62% and 91%, respectively. Conclusions Serum sRAGE levels elevated immediately after cardiac surgery, and the range of elevation was associated with the morbidity of postoperative respiratory failure. Early postoperative sRAGE levels appear to be linked to cardiopulmonary bypass, and may have predictive performance for postoperative respiratory failure; however, large-scale validation studies are needed.

It has the advantages of both contact and noncontact wide-angle viewing systems.
Excess Liquidity and Commodity Boom

Abstract: This paper presents an investigation of whether excess liquidity has been serving as a driving force for the increase in international commodity prices. This study uses a structural VAR model including two global liquidity indicators and the world production index to examine the determinants of international commodity prices. The lending of tolerant international bankers promoted commodity price might increase before the global financial crisis while the international liquidity squeeze brought about their decline after the Lehman Shock. Among commodities, the prices of industrial metals are more attributable to funding liquidity, and the price of crude oil, with a market believed to be more vulnerable to speculative money inflows, has been less dependent on liquidity. Gold is exceptional. It acted as a safe haven during the period of international financial dysfunction.
Risk-Sharing Externalities and Its Implications for Equity Premium in an Infinite-Horizon Economy

Abstract: This paper examines asset prices when risk-sharing externalities are incorporated into an infinite-horizon model where consumers are exposed to the endogenous income risks. It is shown that there exist multiple types of equilibria depending on the degree of market participation. Under incomplete participation, income risks cannot be fully diversified as they induce higher precautionary savings, which are conducive in turn to higher asset prices. However, the exposure to additional dividend risks can lead at the same time to a lower demand for risky assets. The aggregate effect is an increase in the equity risk premium and a decrease in the risk-free rate. Thus, the evidence suggests that the equity premium and risk-free rate puzzles can be partly explained by infinite-horizon models with incomplete market participation.

Roles of eIF2α kinases in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease

Abstract: Cell signaling in response to an array of diverse stress stimuli converges on the phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor-2α (eIF2α). Evidence is accumulating that persistent eIF2α phosphorylation at Ser51 through prolonged overactivation of regulatory kinases occurs in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), leading to shutdown of general translation and translational activation of a subset of mRNAs. Recent advances in the development of gene-based strategies and bioavailable inhibitors, which specifically target one of the eIF2α kinases, have enabled us to investigate pathogenic roles of dysregulated eIF2α phosphorylation pathways. This review provides an overview of animal model studies in this field, focusing particularly on molecular mechanisms by which the dysregulation of eIF2α kinases may account for synaptic and memory deficits associated with AD. A growing body of evidence suggests that correcting aberrant eIF2α kinase activities may serve as disease-modifying therapeutic interventions to treat AD and related cognitive disorders.
Quarkonium correlation functions at finite temperature in the charm to bottom region

Abstract: Quarkonium correlation functions at finite temperature were studied in a region of the quark mass for charmonia to bottomonia in quenched lattice QCD with $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks. Our simulations were performed on large isotropic lattices at temperatures in the range from about 0.80$T_c$ to 1.61$T_c$. We investigated quarkonium behavior in terms of temperature dependence as well as quark mass dependence of the quarkonium correlation functions and related quantities at both vanishing and finite momenta.

Abstract: We investigate pairwise quasi-orthogonal subalgebras in $M_{p^{kn}}$ which are isomorphic to $M_{p^{k}}$ for $k \ge 1$, $n \ge 2$ and a prime number $p$ with $p \ge 3$. We prove there exist $p^{2kn}-1/p^{2k}-1$ such subalgebras and they span $M_{p^{kn}}$.

Abstract: In this paper, the Euler characteristic formula for projective logarithmic minimal degenerations of surfaces with Kodaira dimension zero over a 1-dimensional complex disk is proved under a reasonable assumption and as its application, the singularity of logarithmic minimal degenerations are determined in the abelian or hyperelliptic case. By globalizing this local analysis of singular fibres via generalized canonical bundle formulae due to Fujino-Mori, we bound the number of singular fibres of abelian fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds from above,which was previously done by Oguiso in the potentially good reduction case.
