Abstract: sweet potato is a versatile vegetable which can be used both as human and animal food. the relatively easy and inexpensive cultivation of this vegetable associated with the crop adaptability to several conditions of soil and climate enable the production of sweet potato by family farmers. the objective of this research was to evaluate production of fresh and dry mass of vines for animal nutrition and productivity and storage quality of roots for human food of sweet potato clones. the experimental design was randomized blocks, containing twelve clones and four replications. sweet potato clones from ufvjm germplasm bank were tested along with the control cultivars brazlandia rosada and brazlandia roxa, harvested six months after planting date. we evaluated the productivity of fresh and dry matter of vines and yield and quality of roots. the best clone was bd-45 with a high yield of fresh mass, dry matter and total and commercial roots, with values of 19.7; 3.3; 32.9 and 29.5 t ha-1, respectively. most genotypes presented roots near the ideal format for the market and good resistance to soil insects, with values near to grade 2.0. significant differences were observed among genotypes for the content of starch, total and reducing sugars. the genotypes showed similar chemical composition, except for the ash content. clones bd-67 and bd-56 showed higher levels of ash than cambraia, and similar to other clones.
Uma brasiliana médica: o Brasil Central na expedi??o científica de Arthur Neiva e Belisário Penna e na viagem ao Tocantins de Julio Paternostro
Lima, Nísia Trindade;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702009000500011
Abstract: the article addresses the role played within the social imaginary of brazil by the scientific voyages of physicians in the first half of the twentieth century. two texts are analyzed: a report by arthur neiva and belisário penna published in memórias do instituto oswaldo cruz and another, by julio paternostro, released in 1945 in viagem ao tocantins. the former contributed to singling out pathology as the defining mark of national identity during the first republic (1899-1930), a fact that had repercussions in the following decades, as apparent in paternostro's book, which at the time of its publication was presented as an indictment of national problems. these portraits of brazil highlight as attributes of the country not only disease but also the geographic and, primarily, cultural distance separating the coast from the sert?o.
Miss?es civilizatórias da República e interpreta??o do Brasil
Lima, Nísia Trindade;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701998000400010
Abstract: the article discusses how journeys into the brazilian interior during the first three decades of the republic played a role in constructing interpretations of brazil underpinned by the notion of contrast between sert?o and coast. this missionary movement heavily imbued with symbolism accompanied official projects in boundary definitions, sanitation, settlement, and economic and political integration. closely associated with the expansion of government presence, it included among its leadership intellectuals informed by scientism and by the ideals of progress identified with the new regime. bearing in mind their impact in the process of casting brazilian social thought, the article discusses representations regarding euclides da cunha?s journey to the region of canudos, immortalized in his classic os sert?es, as well as the representations found in reports by the rondon mission and scientific expeditions sponsored by the instituto oswaldo cruz.

Viana, Daniel José Silva;Andrade Júnior, Valter Carvalho de;Ribeiro, Karina Guimar?es;Pinto, Nísia Andrade Villela Dessimoni;Neiva, Ir? Pinheiro;Figueiredo, José Altair;Lemos, Vinícius Teixeira;Pedrosa, Carlos Enrrik;Azevedo, Alcinei Místico;
Ciência Rural , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782011000800027
Abstract: the objective was to evaluate the potential of silage derived from different clones of sweet potato for animal feed. the study was conducted at forquilha farm located in batatal district, mg diamantina in the period from 23/12/2007 to 23/06/2008. the experiment was conducted in split plot design in a randomized complete block. it was evaluated the green and dry matter yield, the chemical composition and the fermentative profile of silage harvested on three dates (days 120, 150 and 180), of eight clones of sweet potato. the dry matter yield did not vary according to the harvest time of the branches, resulting in an average of 6.01t ha-1. the dry matter content in the stems increased with the growth cycle, and there are average levels of 11.94, 12.16 and 19.62% on days 120, 150 and 180 after cutting, respectively. the raw potato silage showed high protein content and adequate energy fermentation and therefore, potential for use in animal feed, regardless of clones.
Ciências sociais e educa??o sanitária: a perspectiva da Se??o de Pesquisa Social do Servi?o Especial de Saúde Pública na década de 1950
Lima, Nísia Trindade;Maio, Marcos Chor;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702010000200014
Abstract: the article transcribes and comments on three papers published by sociologist josé arthur rios in the boletim do servi?o especial de saúde pública in the early 1950s. these texts stand as valuable references in understanding a period in which projects for cultural change guided health programs and especially health education initiatives. the article begins by portraying the backdrop against which the special public health service conducted its activities following its 1942 creation as the result of a cooperation agreement between the brazilian and u.s. governments. aspects of josé arthur rios' professional trajectory and intellectual influences are also examined, and the role of the social scientist in non-academic areas and in the shaping of public agencies and policies in brazil is discussed.
Os valores e a prática institucional da ciência: as concep??es de Robert Merton e Thomas Kuhn
Kropf, Simone Petraglia;Lima, Nísia Trindade;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701999000100002
Abstract: while robert merton approached the issue from the perspective of "scientific ethos" and thomas kuhn, from the perspective of "paradigm/normal science," this comparative analysis of these two author?s conceptions of the social nature of science suggests that their views merged particularly when they argued that taking values into account was essential to understanding scientific activities. placing prime importance on the notion of scientific community, these authors both analyze science as a practice which is defined and developed out of a set of beliefs, principles, and norms shared by a given collectivity. while there were some substantive differences between merton?s and kuhn?s outlooks - each had his own unique way of defining ?social? in the context of science - a comparison of their work underlines the importance of seeing institutionalized beliefs and values as essential in guiding the concrete actions of scientists.

Fórum: o desafio SUS: 20 anos do Sistema único de Saúde. Introdu??o
Maio, Marcos Chor;Lima, Nísia Trindade;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2009000700019
Abstract: this introduction presents the forum on the 20 years of experience with the unified national health system (sus), consisting of 3 articles and a postscript. the first article provides a historical overview of the implementation of the sus, in light of the constitutional provisions pertaining to health. it discusses the context and main issues underlying the creation of the sus in brazil and proposes a renewed linkage between health sector policies and an expanded project for brazilian society. the second article analyzes the sus' dynamics; strides in access to and comprehensiveness of care; and challenges for the achievement of its objectives, in light of factors that are external to the system, involving the need for greater politicization of analyses on the issue. the third article approaches social and political processes that developed from 1988 to 2008. it mainly analyzes the history of two collegiate bodies under the sus at the federal level: the national health council and the tripartite inter-managers' commission. despite the complexity identified by the authors and the important obstacles they identify, the reflections indicate that the sus has been a successful social policy, besides contributing to the consolidation of democracy in brazil.
