Revista de Saúde Pública , 1990, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101990000200010
Abstract: certain characteristics - biological, demographical, social and institutional - based on data collected from the recorded case histories of 2,588 women suffering complications after abortion, attended in a hospital of santo andre, an industrial urban area of greater s. paulo, state of s. paulo, brazil, in the period from january 1978 to december 1982, are identified data show a two-fold increase in the number of women with complications after abortion over the period studied, rising progressively from 302 in 1978, to 672 in 1982. however, the number of births attended at the same hospital underwent an increase of only 14% in the same period, resulting in an average abortion/birth ratio of 1:3.6 and 1:1.8 in 1978 and 1982, respectively. the majority of the population under study (60%) professed nonskilled occupations. age presented a statistically significant relationship with marital status, colour, profession and gestational results. a significant relationship was also observed between age at first menstruation, age at first sexual relationship and age at first pregnancy among those women belonging to the primigesta group.
Evaluating two systems of poultry production: conventional and free-range
Lima, AMC;N??s, IA;
Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2005000400004
Abstract: the improvement in production technology was the major factor that lead brazil to become the third largest poultry producer. the improvement was world′s based on the careful control of several aspects, including which nutrition and management (environment, health and rearing systems). nowadays, the search for good welfare conditions is a global tendency in animal production. concomitantly, an extensive production system of free-range broilers has been increasing in brazil. this study evaluated in situ production indexes of two different commercial broiler productions, an intensive and conventional (farm a) and a semi-extensive free-range production (farm b), in order to assess the relationship between productivity and management. it was observed that the physical environment in farm a presented higher temperatures and relative humidity. based on the results, the production index was better in farm a than in farm b. it was not clear that the production index was related to inadequate welfare of broilers under the conventional rearing system.

INTRODUCTION: The Centro de Orienta o ao Adolescente of Campinas (Southeastern Brazil) maintains a program to qualify economically disadvantaged adolescent students aged 15 to 18 years to enter the labor market. OBJECTIVE: To understand life projects of teenagers who became mothers while participating in the program, in the period from 2003 to 2008, aiming to find the place of professional life in their life trajectory before and after motherhood. METHOD: Eight young mothers were interviewed, and a qualitative methodology was applied to the analysis of the interviews. RESULTS: The trajectories of study and work were discontinued or adapted due to motherhood. Four young mothers completed high school and none had entered university. Three did not return to work and the rest had diverse work experiences. The reported difficulties to enter the labor market were: inadequate instruments to support the children's care, low income, lack of work experience, presence of s

Borges, Ana Luiza Vilela;Schor, Néia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2005000200016
Abstract: this cross-sectional study aimed to assess gender differences in adolescents in relation to onset of sexual activity. a total of 406 15-19-year-old adolescents from a family health unit in the city of s?o paulo, brazil, were interviewed from may to december 2002. nearly half had already had their first sexual intercourse, at a mean age of 15, independently of gender. sexual debut was usually unplanned (72.7%) and inside the home (86.1%). an equal proportion (61.0%) of males and females used some contraceptive method in their first sexual intercourse; however, more males had used a contraceptive method in their most recent intercourse. having initiated their sexual activity in stable, affective relationships, females proved to be more vulnerable to std/ aids, since they switched from condoms to the pill in their subsequent sexual activity. male adolescents continued to use mostly condoms, probably because they were involved mainly in non-stable relationships.
Homens adolescentes e vida sexual: heterogeneidades nas motiva??es que cercam a inicia??o sexual
Borges, Ana Luiza Vilela;Schor, Néia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000100024
Abstract: this article describes male adolescents' affective history and reasons for initiating or postponing sexual activity, using interviews with 184 males ages 15 to 19 and residing in the city of s?o paulo, brazil, in 2002. factors for sexual debut included physical attraction, curiosity, and the desire to lose their virginity, suggesting a profile similar to the male social role. most of the virgin adolescent males justified their choice based on issues of a romantic order, such as not having found the right person or because they preferred to remain virgin until marrying. the results showed a dual social pattern, valuing the feeling of love and deliverance to the loved one, simultaneously with the pressing physical and instinctive desire for sex. traditional patterns of masculinity, like the dissociation between sex and love, appear to be transposed to sexual debut, revealing a diversity in the ways of experiencing sexuality during adolescence, related in turn to the sexual and reproductive health of men and their partners.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2010000100003
Abstract: this paper describes an exploratory study carried out to determine critical control points and possible risks in hatcheries and broiler farms. the study was based in the identification of the potential hazards existing in broiler production, from the hatchery to the broiler farm, identifying critical control points and defining critical limits. the following rooms were analyzed in the hatchery: egg cold storage, pre-heating, incubator, and hatcher rooms. two broiler houses were studied in two different farms. the following data were collected in the hatchery and broiler houses: temperature (oc) and relative humidity (%), air velocity (m s-1), ammonia levels, and light intensity (lx). in the broiler house study, a questionnaire using information of the broiler production good practices (bpgp) manual was applied, and workers were interviewed. risk analysis matrices were build to determine critical control points (ccp). after data collection, statistical process control (spc) was applied through the analysis of the process capacity index, using the software program minitab15?. environmental temperature and relative humidity were the critical points identified in the hatchery and in both farms. the classes determined as critical control points in the broiler houses were poultry litter, feeding, drinking water, workers' hygiene and health, management and biosecurity, norms and legislation, facilities, and activity planning. it was concluded that ccp analysis, associated with spc control tools and guidelines of good production practices, may contribute to improve quality control in poultry production.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2009000300002
Abstract: brazil is today the world's largest broiler meat exporter; however, in order to keep this position, it must comply with welfare regulations while maintaining low production costs. locomotion problems restrain bird movements, limiting their access to drinking and feeding equipment, and therefore their survival and productivity. the objective of this study was to evaluate locomotion deficiency in broiler chickens reared under stressful temperature conditions using three different sampling methods of birds from three different ages. the experiment consisted in determining the gait score of 28, 35, 42 and 49-day-old broilers using three different known gait scoring methods: m1, birds were randomly selected, enclosed in a circle, and then stimulated to walk out of the circle; m2, ten birds were randomly selected and gait scored; and m3, birds were randomly selected, enclosed in a circle, and then observed while walking away from the circle without stimulus to walking. environmental temperature, relative humidity, and light intensity inside the poultry houses were recorded. no evidence of interaction between scoring method and age was found however, both method and age influenced gait score. gait score was found to be lower at 28 days of age. the evaluation using the ten randomly selected birds within the house was the method that presented the less reliable results. gait score results when birds were stimulated to walk were lower than when they were not simulated, independently of age. the gait scores obtained with the three tested methods and ages were higher than those considered acceptable. the highest frequency of normal gait score (0) represented 50% of the flock. these results may be related to heat stress during rearing. average gait score incresead with average ambient temperature, relative humidity, and light intensity. the evaluation of gait score to detect locomotion problems of broilers under rearing conditions seems subjective and difficult to be properly pe
