Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262004000400016
Abstract: the aphids of the genus cinara curtis are important pests of conifers in several countries. in brazil, cinara atlantica (wilson, 1919) has damaged commercial plantations of pinus spp. and biological control with predators can be a better option than chemical control. the objective of this work was to study biology and predation potential of coccinellids hippodamia convergens guérin-méneville, 1842, cycloneda sanguinea (linnaeus, 1763) and eriopis connexa (german, 1824) (coleoptera, coccinellidae) on nymphs of c. atlantica. the study was carried out under controlled conditions (temperature: 23 ± 1oc, rh: 70 ± 10% and fotophase: 14 h). it was verified that c. atlantica nymphs are adequate as food for the three coccinellid species, assuring their development and reproduction. h. convergens and c. sanguinea presented higher longevity and reproduction capacity and also higher predation capacity (3832 and 3633 nymphs of c. atlantica against 2735 nymphs consumed by e. connexa during the complete cycle, respectively for the species). these predator species can contribute to the reduction of cinara population in the field.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the pathogenicity of the entomopathogenic fungus verticillium lecanii isolate ibcb 473 to the aphid cinara atlantica (hemiptera: aphididae), insect pest in pinus spp plantations. the trials were conduced in a completely randomized design, treatments with 5 repetitions, and each repetition consisting of one petri dish (9 cm of diameter) containing 10 nymphs. suspensions adjusted to concentrations of 1,0 ' 106; 0,5 ' 107; 1,0 ' 107; 0,5 ' 108 e 1,0 ' 108 conidia/ml were tested by spraying 1ml over the nymphs. sterilized water was used as control treatment. the petri dishes were maintained at 25±1°c, 70±10% rh and 12-hour photophase. the evaluations were carried out daily, recording the individual mortality of each treatment. the best concentration was 1,0 x 108 conidia/ml with mortality of 86,0% after five days. lt50 for each concentration was 5,82; 5,24; 4,60; 4,34 and 3,83 days, respectively.

Abstract: glycaspis brimblecombei moore, also known as red gum lerp psyllid, is characterized to be specific to the genus eucalyptus. this work aimed to evaluate g. brimblecombei biological cycle in eucalyptus spp. the work was accomplished in acclimatized chamber (bod), with temperature of 26 °c and photophase of 12 hours. eucalyptus species used in this study were: eucalyptus camaldulensis, e. tereticornis, e. urophylla, e. grandis, corymbia citriodora and e grandis x e. urophylla hybrid ('urograndis'). initially 100 replications (nymphs) per treatment (eucalyptus species) were prepared. the evaluations were daily and the following biological parameters were measured: nymph phase duration and viability, adult longevity, number of eggs/female, duration of incubation period, egg number and viability, total cycle, longevity and duration of adults. the results demonstrated that, except for c. citriodora, the other eucalypt species offer conditions to g. brimblecombei biological development, being e. camaldulensis the most adequate species.

Abstract: psyllids are one most widespread group of pests, causing severe damage on agricultural and forestry systems. the recently discover about occurrence of red gum lerp psyllid glycaspis brimblecombei moore (hemiptera: psyllidae), in brazil is, nowadays a serious problem in eucalyptus forests, mainly in e. camaldulensis. the psyllid specific parasitic wasp psyllaephagus bliteus riek (hymenoptera: encyrtidae) is the main biological control agent of this pest. thus, the adequate monitoring of both species by efficient sampling method would facilitate a future decision making. due to economic importance, this study aimed to evaluate g. brimblecombei and p. bliteus populations in eucalyptus camaldulensis plantation, using yellow traps to determinate population fluctuation with weather interactions (temperature and rainfall). the study of the pest and parasitoid population (53 sampling dates) was carried out on e. camaldulensis plantations in 19ha area in luíz ant?nio municipality (sp, brazil), with quarterly samplings, between january and june, 2005 (ten sampling dates). this research indicated that populations had an inversely proportional correlation subject according to the temperature. however, there is no correlation between both species with the rainfall in the evaluated period.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate changes in existing motor development of infants from parents and guidance to carers or in a program of interventional therapy in the family context.twenty two babies have participated, divided into two groups: intervention group (gi) and control group (gc). both groups were evaluated at the beginning and at the end of eight weeks. the gi mothers received instructions from a physical therapy program for babies and context changing guidelines at every week. the references used in this study were: scale alberta and the ahemd-sr questionnaire. for statistical analysis it was used the nonparametric tests of wilcoxon, mann-whitney, mcnemar and the correlation of spearman. it was observed a significant motor development in gi group comparing pre and post intervention (p=0,029). the results suggest that babies stimulated correcty in the home environment develop a higher quality in motor learning.

Abstract: the catalytic properties of niobium based catalysts were investigated in the conversion of oleic acid to liquid fuels at atmospheric pressure and at 623 k. the catalytic tests were performed in a fixed bed and continuous flow reactor using an acid to catalyst ratio equal to 4 and n2 as carrier gas. the reaction products were analyzed by gas chromatography and acidity measurements. nh3 temperature programmed desorption, n2 adsorption-desorption (bet method) and xray diffraction were also performed in order to determine the structural and acidic properties of the catalysts. from the catalytic tests, it was detected the formation of compounds in the range of gasoline, diesel and lubricant oils. higher catalytic activity and selectivity for diesel fuel were observed for the catalysts nbopo4 and h3po4/nb2o5 that possesses higher acidities and surface areas.

Abstract: the goals of the study were to understand the cultural meaning that the nursing team and burn patients attribute to burn pain. participant observations were carried out during one year at a burn unit. semi-structured interviews with four nurses, five nursing auxiliaries and 12 patients were recorded. the burn pain is understood by nurses as physical and emotional pain. for professionals and patients, bath and dressing changes are stressful. for patients, burn pain is terrible and they can not explain it. however, they feel they should hold it up.
