Histological and electron microscopic study of the postulated protective role of green tea against DEHP liver toxicity in mice

Abstract: Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate [DEHP] is a plasticizer (softener) used to increase the flexibility of polyvinyl chloride (plastic). Animal studies following acute and chronic exposure of DEHP show several toxic changes in many organs including the liver. There have been no studies of compound specific techniques for reducing DEHP body burden. A study of the impact of dietary modifications (increased intake of antioxidants, zinc and glutathione precursors, and decreased dietary fat) on the effects of exposure to DEHP might be useful. Antioxidants effect of green tea was confirmed in many studies as a substance that protects the body from free radicals against degenerative changes by minimizing the amount of damage. This study was performed to evaluate the postulated protective effect of green tea against DEHP Liver toxicity in the mice on histological and ultra structural level. Results showed no significant differences in the mean of hepatocytes affection regarding necrosis or hydropic degeneration between 2nd, 3rd & 4th groups. Marked increase in amount of collagen fibers between hepatocytes and marked depleted glycogen contents in many hepatocytes were detected in 2nd, 3rd & 4th groups. Ulrastructral changes of the hepatocytes showed degenerated membranous organelles, destructed nuclear membrane and cytoplasmic necrosis in 2nd, 3rd & 4th groups. Many fat globules detected in the 3rd group were diminished in the 4th one. In conclusion, in-significant difference in hepatocytes affection existed between green tea control group, DEHP group & green tea/DEHP group. It is concluded that green tea has no antioxidant role against DEHP liver degeneration, in contrast it may have an oxidant role; further studies are needed. Abstract: The rapid globalization of modern business and the challenges to reach sales objectives within tough selling conditions pose major issues for human resource management. One important area that has yet to be fully explored is the management of conflict between sales and marketing functional areas in tough selling conditions. We hypothesize that: 1) marketing and sales task conflict is more likely to involve distributive (win–lose) issues and 2) when win–win (integrative) potential exists, the disputants are more likely to approach conflict from a fixed-pie perspective. Our analysis of data collected from food manufacturing industry supports this hypothesis. The application of different conflict management strategies varies depending on whether they are applied to sales or marketing task conflict. The importance of aligning conflict management strategies with the integrative potential of sales and marketing tasks is presented to managers.

Abstract:

Colorectal cancer represents the third cancer worldwide. Studies showed thatinsufficient levels of vitamin D may result in colorectal cancer. Genetic variations in genes controlling vitamin D activity would play a role in determining susceptibility to colorectal cancer. Aim of the work: to study the different genotypes of VDR polymorphisms and detect the association between serum levels of 25(OH)VitD and 1,25(OH)2VitD among sample of Egyptian patients with different stages of colorectal cancer. Methods: Ninety patients (60 with different stages of colorectal cancer and 30 patients with benign pathology of the colon) together with 30 healthy controls were examined using PCR-RFLP analysis for FokI, ApaI and TaqI polymorphisms. Results: Genotype distribution for ApaI polymorphism showed no statistically significant difference between patients (colorectal cancer and benign) and controls with p = 0.1. There was no statistically significant difference in FokI polymorphism where p = 0.26 and genotype distribution for TaqI was also insignificant with p = 0.016. The median serum level of 25(OH)VitD was low in cancer cases compared to the control group and benign cases with (p < 0.001). There

Olive Oil effectively mitigates ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats

Abstract: We studied adult female Wistar rats aged 12-14 months, divided into three groups: sham-operated control (SHAM), ovariectomized (OVX), and ovariectomized rats supplemented with extravirgin olive oil (Olive-OVX) orally for 12 weeks; 4 weeks before ovariectomy and 8 weeks after. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected. Plasma levels of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitrates were assayed. Specimens from both the tibia and the liver were processed for light microscopic examination. Histomorphometric analysis of the tibia was also performed.The OVX-rats showed a significant decrease in plasma calcium levels, and a significant increase in plasma ALP, MDA, and nitrates levels. These changes were attenuated by olive oil supplementation in the Olive-OVX rats. Light microscopic examination of the tibia of the OVX rats revealed a significant decrease in the cortical bone thickness (CBT) and the trabecular bone thickness (TBT). In addition, there was a significant increase in the osteoclast number denoting bone resorption. In the Olive-OVX rats these parameters were markedly improved as compared to the OVX group. Examination of the liver specimens revealed mononuclear cellular infiltration in the portal areas in the OVX-rats which was not detected in the Olive-OVX rats.Olive oil effectively mitigated ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats, and is a promising candidate for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.Osteoporosis represents the most common metabolic bone disease. Abstract:

Preeclampsia is a frequent disorder with reported incidence in pregnancies. In Egypt, it complicates 6%-8% of pregnancies and reaches 15% in referral centers. The renin-angiotensin system activation during the early stages of Preeclampsia proved to be a direct cause. Women carrying the D allele of the ACE-I/D polymorphism have higher measures of uterine artery resistance, which is a marker for development of intrauterine growth retardation and preeclampsia. The maternal syndrome of preeclampsia (PE) during the latter half of pregnancy is believed to result from impaired placentation in early gestation and a failure to develop low resistance uteroplacental circulation. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association with angiotensin converting enzyme gene polymorphism and changes in its enzyme serum level in preeclamptic patients compared to non preeclamptic control group together with studying the changes in umbilical artery and uterine artery Doppler. Subjects: The study was conducted on 180 pregnant women allocated into two groups having the same inclusion and exclusion criteria except for hypertension and proteinuria; each group comprised of 90 pregnant women with matched age. Methods: Doppler study of umbilical and uterine arteries and the detection of Angiotensin converting gene polymorphism by PCR with Estimation of serum ACE in serum by ELISA technique. Results: The distribution of the ACE-I/D genotypes and allelic frequencies in the present study of polymorphism was 37.8% for the DD, 48.9% for the ID, 13.3% for the II in preeclampsia group while it was 33.3% for the DD, 46.7% for the ID, and 20% for the II in the control group. There was no significant difference between cases and controls regarding the cumulative D effect. Conclusions: No existence of a relation between preeclampsia and ACE gene polymorphism considering different modes of inheritance whether is dominance or recessiveness. Abstract: Atomistic simulations, based either on an empirical interatomic potential or on ab initio calculations, are used to study the pyramidal glide of a 1/3 <1-210> screw dislocation in hexagonal close-packed zirconium. Generalized stacking fault calculations reveal a metastable stacking fault in the first order pyramidal {10-11} plane, which corresponds to an elementary pyramidal twin. This fault is at the origin of a metastable configuration of the screw dislocation in zirconium, which spontaneously appears when the dislocation glides in the pyramidal plane.

Abstract: Although the favored glide planes in hexagonal close-packed Zr are prismatic, screw dislocations can escape their habit plane to glide in either pyramidal or basal planes. Using abinitio calculations within the nudged elastic band method, we show that, surprisingly, both events share the same thermally activated process with an unusual conservative motion of the prismatic stacking fault perpendicularly to itself. Halfway through the migration, the screw dislocation adopts a nonplanar metastable configuration with stacking faults in adjacent prismatic planes joined by a two-layer pyramidal twin.

Abstract: Let $a,b,c$ be distinct positive integers. Set $M=a+b+c$ and $N=abc$. We give an explicit description of the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic curve $\displaystyle E_{(M,N)}:y^2-Mxy-Ny=x^3$ over $\Q$. In particular we determine the torsion subgroup of $E_{(M,N)}(\Q)$ and show that its rank is positive. Furthermore there are infinitely many positive integers $M$ that can be written in $n$ different ways, $n\in\{2,3\}$, as the sum of three distinct positive integers with the same product $N$ and $E_{(M,N)}(\Q)$ has rank at least $n$.
A Combinatorial Interpretation of the LDU Decomposition of Totally Positive Matrices

Abstract: We study the combinatorial description of the LDU decomposition of totally positive matrices. We give a description of the lower triangular L, the diagonal D, and the upper triangular U matrices of the LDU decomposition of totally positive matrices in terms of the combinatorial structure of essential planar networks described by Zelvinsky and Fomin. Similarly, we find a combinatorial description of the inverses of these matrices. In addition, we provide recursive formulae for computing the L, D, and U matrices of a totally positive matrix.
