First Record of a Hyalid Species, Protohyale pumila (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Hyalidae), from Korea

Abstract: A hyalid amphipod, Protohyale pumila (Hiwatari and Kajihara, 1981), collected from Jeju Island is reported for the first time in the Korean fauna. The species is characterized by the presence of a short apical spine on the palp article 4 of maxilliped, a distinctly large and blunt cusp on the propodus of male gnathopod 1, and a distal truncate process on the palm of male gnathopod 2. Herein, the present species is described and illustrated. Korean hyalid amphipods now are composed of four species belonging to three genera. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Marine Arthropod Depository Bank of Korea, Seoul National University.
High Frequency Sporophytes Regeneration from the Spore Culture of the Endangered Aquatic Fern Isoetes coreana  [PDF]

Using a mixed culture of megaspores and microspores from I. coreana, we established high frequency sporophyte regeneration system. After 20 days of culturing in MS basal medium, microscopic examination showed significant morphological changes and the microspore released numerous small vesicles into the culture medium. Megaspores also showed dramatic morphological changes during its incubation time in culture. The spore wall was cracked by the expansion of the megaspore (about 2 times increase in diameter). Simultaneously, brown spots were observed on the surface of the megaspores. The frequency of female gametophytes developing from immature megaspores cultured in MS basal liquid medium (pH 7) supplemented with 1 mgl-1 GA3 was 46%. However, these female gametophytes derived from megaspore only culture could not differentiate into sporophytes. The mixed culture of microspores and megaspores resulted in successful sporophyte regeneration. The highest frequency (12.3%) of green sporophyte regeneration from mixed spore culture occurred when the cultures were maintained at 25℃ under cool-white fluorescent light (40 μmol·m-2·s-1) with a 16 h photoperiod. Regenerated sporophytes were transferred to a test tube containing vermiculite and a sand mixture and left there until they had three leaves. After root growth and the fifth leaf had emerged, more than 95% of the regenerated sporophytes were successfully transferred to the soil and grown to mature plants. Abstract: We study the self-duality of Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons theory which can be interpreted as a massive D2 brane in IIA string theory and exhibit the self-dual formulation in terms of the gauge invariant master Lagrangian. The proposed master Lagrangian contains the nonlocal auxiliary field and approaches self-dual formulation of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in a point-particle limit with the weak string-coupling limit. The consistent canonical brackets of dual system are derived.
Selection of Health Care Workers for Screening for Latent Tuberculosis Infection  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: The rate of latent tuberculosis infections (LTBIs) in health care workers (HCWs) is higher than that in non-HCWs. We studied to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of LTBIs and the acceptance rate for treatment of LTBI among HCWs in South Korea, a country with an intermediate tuberculosis (TB) burden. Methodology: LTBI screening was conducted for HCWs at a tertiary and a secondary hospital from April 2017 to August 2017. This was a retrospective study included all HCWs who underwent LTBI examination. HCWs were classified by the degree of risk into four groups, based on two factors: possibility of exposure to TB, and impact on patients at the time of TB onset in the HCWs. The interferon-gamma release assay was used for the diagnosis of LTBI. Results: A total of 1326 HCWs were included; they comprised 801 HCWs from a tertiary hospital and 525 from a secondary hospital. A total of 235 (17.7%) HCWs were diagnosed with LTBIs. According to risk classification, there was no significant difference (P = 0.24). In multivariate analysis, age was the only independent risk factor (P < 0.001). The acceptance rate for LTBI treatment was 60.43%, and there were no associated factors in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: HCWs did not show any significant difference in the rate of LTBI by the degree of risk, and age was the independent risk factor. LTBI screening should be conducted for all HCWs regardless of risk classification.

Abstract: We are living in the transitional age from the rational, analytical, and scientific to the cultural, sensitive, and aesthetic. The aesthetics of everyday life lies at the center of this age. There is no boundary between art and life in contemporary art. Almost all the contents and objects of everyday life became a work of art in the condition of searching for the aesthetic. Since aesthetic theory was shifted from the artist-centered or a work of art-centered to the audience, spectator or beholder-centered, art and everyday life were more closely related to each other. So aesthetic attention or attitude is not specific to art, but pervasive broadly in everyday life. We can embrace the aesthetic concerns in everything we make and use every day. In the long tradition of Korean art, it can be seen that aesthetic consciousness is steeped in day-to-day life as well as the arts. I want to consider the problems of everydayness, Korean aesthetic consciousness in daily life, and contemplation in the aesthetic consciousness. Korean art was characterized by its “lack of refinement” and “nonchalance”. The characteristics of Korean art as the qualities of “technique without technique”, “Planning without plan”, “asymmetrical symmetry” have dominated the everyday consciousness of Korean people as well as Korean art. The extension of aesthetic emotion through experimentation shows us the change of aesthetic consciousness as a new possibility of interpretation. We stand in an urgent situation of the need for a new theory of art. It will be related to the future of aesthetics. For this reason, I think we have to consider the meaning of the aesthetic turn in everyday life.
Problems and Prospects of Geoaesthetics  [PDF]

Abstract: Geoaesthetics is the project of making aesthetic sense of nature through geological phenomena. The aesthetic appreciation of nature has recently become urgent because of the serious influence of the natural environment on human beings. The author’s geoaesthetical research is categorized into three problems: art in geology or geology in the arts as the close relationship between art and geology, geological cognition of nature and natural cognition in environmental aesthetics, and the geoaesthetical approach through works of art. Geologic forces and processes have become significant materials for aesthetic sensations. Based on the geoaesthetic perspective, the author explores the ultimate purpose of art as a return to natural order. It seems partly to be related to the ontological problem of art. Here we can feel earthly dynamics, universal calmness, and the contemplative atmosphere simultaneously.
New Report of Three Xanthid Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Xanthidae) from Korea

Abstract: Many members of xanthid crabs have the black coloured fingers and are found easily in the intertidal or subtidal zone. Three xanthids, Danielea noelensis (Ward, 1934), Etisus anaglyptus H. Milne Edwards, 1834, and Gaillardiellus rueppelli (Krauss, 1843), are newly reported from Korean waters as a result of continuous taxonomic studies on crabs. Of these, the present specimen of D. noelensis has rather projecting angle on the antero-external border of the merus of the third maxilliped differed from that of the original description. The genus Danielea Ng and Clark, 2003 and the genus Etisus H. Milne Edwards, 1834 are also reported first time from Korean fauna. Their descriptions are provided with illustrations. Korean Xanthoidea now consists of 28 species belonging to 24 genera.
Structural and Functional Insights into (S)-Ureidoglycolate Dehydrogenase, a Metabolic Branch Point Enzyme in Nitrogen Utilization

Abstract: Nitrogen metabolism is one of essential processes in living organisms. The catabolic pathways of nitrogenous compounds play a pivotal role in the storage and recovery of nitrogen. In Escherichia coli, two different, interconnecting metabolic routes drive nitrogen utilization through purine degradation metabolites. The enzyme (S)-ureidoglycolate dehydrogenase (AllD), which is a member of l-sulfolactate dehydrogenase-like family, converts (S)-ureidoglycolate, a key intermediate in the purine degradation pathway, to oxalurate in an NAD(P)-dependent manner. Therefore, AllD is a metabolic branch-point enzyme for nitrogen metabolism in E. coli. Here, we report crystal structures of AllD in its apo form, in a binary complex with NADH cofactor, and in a ternary complex with NADH and glyoxylate, a possible spontaneous degradation product of oxalurate. Structural analyses revealed that NADH in an extended conformation is bound to an NADH-binding fold with three distinct domains that differ from those of the canonical NADH-binding fold. We also characterized ligand-induced structural changes, as well as the binding mode of glyoxylate, in the active site near the NADH nicotinamide ring. Based on structural and kinetic analyses, we concluded that AllD selectively utilizes NAD+ as a cofactor, and further propose that His116 acts as a general catalytic base and that a hydride transfer is possible on the B-face of the nicotinamide ring of the cofactor. Other residues conserved in the active sites of this novel l-sulfolactate dehydrogenase-like family also play essential roles in catalysis.
Evaluation of EPS-PCL Nanofibers as a Nanobiocomposite for Artificial Skin Based on Dermal Fibroblast Culture

Abstract: Several natural bioactive molecules have been used in the development of scaffolds to enhance biocompatibility or biodegradability and macroalgae contain many bioactive compounds that regulate the physiological activities of cells. In this study, extrapolymeric substances (EPS) from brown algae, Undaria pinnatifida, were dispersed in poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) nanofiber, fabricated by electrospinning technique to mimic natural extracellular matrix (ECM), and tested as a scaffold for the production of artificial skin using rat primary fibroblasts. The level of adhesion, viability, and infiltration of cells on the EPS-PCL nanofibers were then assessed. The primary fibroblasts attached well, had good viability, and infiltrated through the nanofiber mat without cytotoxicity. Additionally, fibroblast on EPS-PCL nanofiber overcame the stress derived from high cell density at limited area. These results indicate that EPS-imbedded nanofiber has the potential to be used as scaffolds to develop artificial skin or as wound-healing nanomedicines to regenerate injured skin. 1. Introduction Skin protects the inner organs of an organism from a variety of stresses. Skin is primarily composed of three layers, the epidermis, dermis, and hyperdermis, each of which contains several types of cells. The dermis layer is made almost completely of fibroblasts, which are known to have an effect on keratinocyte proliferation in the epidermis and to be related to some immune responses of skin [1, 2]. When the skin is damaged at about 80?μm, the protected dermis layer can be exposed to air, necessitating regeneration to protect inner tissues. Moreover, in cases in which autoregeneration does not work well and serious scars are left, it is necessary for artificial skin to replace the injured skin for further medical treatments [3, 4]. Artificial skin can be made from skin cells cultured in/on three-dimensional biomaterials. Artificial skin requires a scaffold that is able to offer an environment that enables cells to grow well to establish a cellular community as well as to control their proliferation. Considering that all natural tissues make their complete functions via incorporation with extracellular matrix (ECM), scaffolds should be equivalent to ECM and provide cells with sufficient chances to attach to and spread along scaffolds and activate cellular metabolism normally [5]. Abstract: A SU(2) effective lagrangian is extended to a $SU_{L}(3)\otimes SU_{R}(3)$ by including the vector and axial vector meson. With this effective lagrangian, electromagnetic form factors of charged pion and kaon are calculated. The pseudoscalar meson loops are taken into account. Good agreement with experimental data is obtained for those form factors. Decay widths of $\rho\to \pi\pi$ and $\phi\to K^{+}K^{-}$ are also calculated and shown to agree with experimental data very well.
