Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2003,
Abstract: PURPOSE: The typical manifestations of neurocysticercosis are described widely in the literature. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the uncommon presentations of different forms of neurocysticercosis in MR imaging. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of 172 cases of neurocysticercosis in MR studies was carried out over a period of 13 years. One hundred and four males and 68 females with a mean age of 32 ± 3.7 years were studied. The studies were performed on 1.5 T GE MR units and T1 was used before and after gadolinium injection, T2 and gradient-echo (T2*) sequences. RESULTS: The authors divided the unusual manifestations of neurocysticercosis into: intraventricular, subarachnoid, spinal, orbital, intraparenchymatous, and reactivation of previously calcified lesions. The results obtained were: intraparenchymatous 95 cases (55.23%); intraventricular 27 cases (15.69%); subarachnoid 20 cases (11.63%); spinal 6 cases (3.49%); orbital 1 case (0.58%); reactivated lesion 1 case (0.58%); association of intraventricular and intraparenchymatous 12 cases (6.98%); association of subarachnoid and intraparenchymatous 6 cases (3.49%); association of subarachnoid and intraventricular, 4 cases (2.32%). CONCLUSION: MR imaging is a sensitive and specific method in the analysis of different forms of unusual manifestations of neurocysticercosis, which should appear in the differential diagnosis of parenchymal, ventricular, spinal, cisternal, and orbital lesions.

Abstract: The β2 auxiliary subunit of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) appears at early stages of brain development. It is abundantly expressed in the mammalian central nervous system where it forms complexes with different channel isoforms, including Nav1.2. From the structural point of view, β2 is a transmembrane protein: at its extracellular N-terminus an Ig-like type C2 domain mediates the binding to the pore-forming alpha subunit with disulfide bonds and the interactions with the extracellular matrix. Given this structural versatility, β2 has been suggested to play multiple functions ranging from channel targeting to the plasma membrane and gating modulation to control of cell adhesion. We report that, when expressed in Chinese Hamster Ovary cells CHO-K1, the subunit accumulates at the perimetral region of adhesion and particularly in large lamellipodia-like membrane processes where it induces formation of filopodia-like structures. When overexpressed in developing embryonic rat hippocampal neurons in vitro, β2 specifically promotes formation of filopodia-like processes in dendrites leading to expansion of the arborization tree, while axonal branching remains unaltered. In contrast to this striking and highly specific effect on dendritic morphology, the targeting of functional sodium channels to the plasma membrane, including the preferential localization of Nav1.2 at the axon, and their gating properties are only minimally affected. From these and previously reported observations it is suggested that β2, among its multiple functions, may contribute to promote dendritic outgrowth and to regulate neuronal wiring at specific stages of neuronal development.

Abstract: boned light weight hen meat was ground, cured, flavored with liquid smoke, and cooked. the effect of salts (sodium chloride alone and combined with phosphates), added at different time intervals postmortem, and before and after freezing, on sensory, physical, and chemical properties of the loaves was studied. poultry loaves of acceptable quality were obtained with meat that had been slowly frozen and stored at -23°c for a 40-50 day period. when the carcasses were pumped with salt solutions before freezing, only those samples having added phosphates were satisfactory as far as binding and other properties were concerned. the results suggest that tetrasodium pyrophosphate, combined with sodium chloride, when added to the meat immediately after slaughter, could improve the meat binding properties.

Anais da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz , 1987, DOI: 10.1590/S0071-12761987000100013
Abstract: chicken loaves (emulsion type) were prepared with light and dark meat from broiler hand deboned breasts and legs, chicken fat, with and without skin. the meat was cured and smoked. processing yields were 1.10 - 1.22 1b of final product for each 1b of meat (or 0.38 - 0.42 1b for each 1b of ready-to-cook bird); the yield was higher for loaves containing skin. this meat ingredient (at 10% level) had no significant influence on quality and chemical composition of the product, which had approximately 64.9% of moisture, 18.4% of protein (moisture/protein ratio = 3.5), 12.6% of fat, 2.4% of sodium chloride and 63 ppm od sodium nitrite. the ph of the loaves averaged 6.1. storage of the loaves at -25°c for 30 days apparently did not affect quality.
