Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2015.51005
Abstract: Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) complained of several disorders during his life, the most important of which were chronic arthritic pains and bilateral blindness. These symptoms might be results from an immune rheumatic disease, namely reactive arthritis (urethritis, uveitis, arthritis), when Galileo started suffering with an episode of fever in June 1593. Padua University owns the fifth lumbar vertebra of the great scientist and we performed a series of anthropological and radiographic analyses on it. The anthropological measurements showed that the shape of the vertebra was normal as to exclude significant diseases. The study through radiography and Computed Tomography showed only a mild arthrosis documented by small osteophytosis. Eventually the disease evolved into blindness with a pannus restricting the pupils (uveitis). These findings support the occurrence of reactive arthritis. Alternatively to urethral infection, Galileo could have suffered from Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in 1593, which was complicated by reactive arthritis a couple of weeks later. Thereafter he complained several episodes of recurrent arthritis, which eventually culminated into uveitis and bilateral blindness.\"\"

Abstract: he was an inside witness to the death throes of brazil's military dictatorship, under the jo?o baptista figueiredo administration. he was "internal minister" of health, in the words of the official minister himself, waldir arcoverde. within this ministry, he was responsible for important changes and as a result had to rely on his northeastern vitality to cope with the constant threats and pressures brought to bear by the so-called "information community," then ruling brazil with an iron fist. mozart abreu lima was one of the country's key public health strategists in the period leading from dictatorship to brazil's slow and gradual return to the rule of law. when he took office as secretary general of the health ministry, he brought with him the sharp intelligence already demonstrated during development of a master plan for the central de medicamentos (ceme), a centralized drug administration with broad powers. he also came equipped with a culture of decentralized, participative management, acquired at sudene (superintendência para o desenvolvimento do nordeste), the federal agency responsible for development of the brazilian northeast. although he considers himself a man of the left, he has no qualms about applauding the industrial policy inaugurated by brazil's military governments, especially dating from the geisel administration. a contumacious nationalist, mozart abreu lima made history at fiocruz as one of the mentors behind creation of the national quality control institute (instituto nacional de controle de qualidade/incq). his was the main hand behind the extraordinary logistics involved in introducing national vaccination days, now a worldwide model in immunization approaches. in this interview given to carlos fidélis pontes, a researcher at casa de oswaldo cruz mozart goes behind the scenes of his experience in power, reveals corruption schemes in the area of health surveillance, shares concepts on public management, and criticizes the brazil of disposabl

The objective of this article is to analyze the relations among education, ethnicity and social mobility in the region of German colonization in Rio Grande do Sul, and mainly in Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, a city with strong German identity speech. Taking into consideration that it is a city characterized by Germanism, what was observed in the researches accomplished until now, including the last six years, is that the region in question has a significant population of non-white people, though socially invisible and excluded from the identitary inclusion process of the region community. The researches that were carried out in the private and public – municipal and state – schools in the region of Santa Cruz do Sul permit sharp analysis of the relations between education and social immobility, which result can be evaluated in the identitary visibility/invisibility dynamic and processes of community exclusion of those groups, nominally of Afro-descendants.

Reflex?o & A??o , 2010,
Abstract: O artigo problematiza as abordagens racialistas e n o-racialistas que marcam o debate sobre a es afirmativas no Brasil tomando a miscigena o como eixo norteador de ambas as posturas político-teóricas. Abstract The article discusses the racialists and non-racialist approaches that mark the debate on affirmative action’s in Brazil taking miscegenation as a guideline for both political andtheoretical stances. It proposes a critique of the approaches to the racialization of the identities in the country as well as the approaches of the intellectuals who, on behalf of local idiosyncrasies or even egalitarian principles, try to avent differential policies. It is the tension between the redistribution and recognition policies that the text is based on, therefore, the analysis of the dilemmas between color/race/miscegenation and affirmative action policies in Brazil.
Huge Cystic Lymphangioma of the Pancreas Mimicking Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasm

Case Reports in Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/951358
Abstract: Lymphangiomas of the pancreas are very rare benign tumors of lymphatic origin, accounting for less than 1% of these neoplasms. We report a case of a 55-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass in the left abdomen. Abdominal sonography and computed tomography showed a lobulated, hypodense mass extending from the left diaphragm to the pelvis, measuring  cm. A preoperative diagnosis of mucinous cystadenoma of the pancreas was suggested and the patient underwent laparotomy. Distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy was performed, encompassing a segment of descending colon because of close relationship to the mass. The cystic mass was histologically diagnosed as lymphangioma of the pancreas. The patient is well and free of disease 12 months after surgery. Pancreatic lymphangioma should be kept in mind when a huge, multiloculated mass is encountered in the abdomen, especially in adult women. Although lymphangioma is considered a benign tumor, involvement of adjacent organs sometimes occurs and extended resection is required to obtain a radical treatment.
