Abstract: despite the absence of current official reports showing the number of cattle infected by rabies, it is estimated that nearly 30,000 bovines are lost each year in brazil. in order to minimize the important economic losses, control of the disease is achieved by eliminating bat colonies and by herd vaccination. in this study, we compare the antibody response in cattle elicited by vaccination with an attenuated era vaccine (aevac) and an inactivated-adjuvanted pv (ipvvac) vaccine. the antibody titers were appraised by cell-culture neutralization test and elisa, and the percentage of seropositivity was ascertained for a period of 180 days. ipvvac elicited complete seropositivity rates from day 30 to day 150, and even on day 180, 87% of the sera showed virus-neutralizing antibody titers (vna) higher than 0.5iu/ml. there were no significant differences between the vna titers and seropositivity rates obtained with ipvvac in the two methods tested. aevac, however, elicited significantly lower titers than those observed in the group receiving inactivated vaccine. in addition, the profiles of antirabies igg antibodies, evaluated by elisa, and vna, appraised by cell-culture neutralization test, were slightly different, when both vaccines were compared.

Energy Structure of Optimal Positional Strategies in Mean Payoff Games
Carlo Comin
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: This work studies structural aspects concerning optimal positional strategies in Mean Payoff Games, it is a contribution to understanding the relationship between optimal positional strategies in MPGs and small energy-progress measures in reweighted energy games. In particular, it is observed an energy decomposition theorem which describes the whole space of all optimal positional strategies in terms of so-called extremal small energy-progress measures. This points out what we called the "energy structure" of the space of all optimal positional strategies in MPGs, as it allows for a disjoint-set decomposition (of that space) which is expressed in terms of small energy-progress measures in reweighted energy games.
(Extended Version) Algebraic Characterization of the Class of Languages recognized by Measure Only Quantum Automata
Carlo Comin
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: We study a model of one-way quantum automaton where only measurement operations are allowed ($\mon$). We give an algebraic characterization of $\lmo(\Sigma)$, showing that the syntactic monoids of the languages in $\lmo(\Sigma)$ are exactly the $J$-trivial literally idempotent syntactic monoids, where $J$ is the Green's relation determined by two-sided ideals. We also prove that $\lmo(\Sigma)$ coincides with the literal variety of literally idempotent piecewise testable regular languages. This allows us to prove the existence of a polynomial time algorithm for deciding whether a regular language belongs to $\lmo(\Sigma)$ and to discuss definability issues in terms of the existential first-order logic $\Sigma_1[<]$ and the linear temporal logic without the next operator LTLWN.

The images produced by QuickBird II sensor and laser scanner data areexpensive products to commercialize. Therefore, it has shown its value in the processing of digital images. The goal of this work is to show a viable option for building identification through high resolution image classification using laser scanner system data and images of QuickBird II. For doing so, it used intensity and altimetry laser data integrated with the panchromatic band of the QuickBird II sensor; by means of neural network algorithms and a region oriented approach. The work is justified because it uses recent technologies (laser scanner and QuickBird II images), and it can reduce the production costs of a thematic map. The method showed viable the elaboration of a thematic map.

Alignment-free phylogeny of whole genomes using underlying subwords

Algorithms for Molecular Biology , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1748-7188-7-34
Abstract: Background With the progress of modern sequencing technologies a large number of complete genomes are now available. Traditionally the comparison of two related genomes is carried out by sequence alignment. There are cases where these techniques cannot be applied, for example if two genomes do not share the same set of genes, or if they are not alignable to each other due to low sequence similarity, rearrangements and inversions, or more specifically to their lengths when the organisms belong to different species. For these cases the comparison of complete genomes can be carried out only with ad hoc methods that are usually called alignment-free methods. Methods In this paper we propose a distance function based on subword compositions called Underlying Approach (UA). We prove that the matching statistics, a popular concept in the field of string algorithms able to capture the statistics of common words between two sequences, can be derived from a small set of “independent” subwords, namely the irredundant common subwords. We define a distance-like measure based on these subwords, such that each region of genomes contributes only once, thus avoiding to count shared subwords a multiple number of times. In a nutshell, this filter discards subwords occurring in regions covered by other more significant subwords. Results The Underlying Approach (UA) builds a scoring function based on this set of patterns, called underlying. We prove that this set is by construction linear in the size of input, without overlaps, and can be efficiently constructed. Results show the validity of our method in the reconstruction of phylogenetic trees, where the Underlying Approach outperforms the current state of the art methods. Moreover, we show that the accuracy of UA is achieved with a very small number of subwords, which in some cases carry meaningful biological information.
