New Proposal of Evaluation of the Thoracic Outlet  [PDF]

Abstract: The present article comprehensively reviews the thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), its etiology and assessment, with reference to the usual conservative treatment and surgical therapy, highlighting new definitions and reporting obsolete tests. The syndrome affects about 8% of the population, with higher prevalence in females, and rarely affects the children. Conservative, non-surgical treatment produces good results, and it becomes important to know which specific areas need to be treated. Currently, there is no rehabilitation scheme, either osteopathic or chiropractic, considered as a valid tool for a precise localization of the pathologic condition, probably due to the lack of a manual assessment process to evaluate bones and muscular components of the thoracic outlet. In this situation, the manual treatment performed is usually generic. The present article proposes a manual evaluation that can be used to identify the anatomical area which needs to be treated. This hypothesis of assessment should be carried out after the clinician has ruled out the necessity of surgery with instrumental examinations.
ANALYSIS OF THINNING OPERATIONS IN CORSICAN PINE ARTIFICIAL HIGH FORESTS IN CALABRIA (ITALY)

Abstract: Artificial reforestation of Corsican pine, carried out in Calabria in the 1950s and 1960s lacked the essential management phase following planting with the result that they are now in a precarious state of physical and biological balance. Therefore, given the present situation, it is necessary to intervene with a policy of rational management, based on re-naturalization, in order to best restore the structural and functional balance. Of the different tendings, thinning has a fundamental role in promoting such evolutive processes. The research, conducted in Aspromonte, examines a chain of forestry utilization engaged in selective thinning from below, carried out with varying intensities of intervention in order to assess their capacity and productivity. The results of the research show how, despite the low level of mechanization used, work productivity falls fully within the national average, and how these too often discontinued silvicultural operations instead prove to be fundamental in encouraging the growth in the efficiency of Calabrian forest systems.

Abstract: this paper deals with a production scheduling problem that typically occurs in the aeronautics industry involving special structures called assembly fixtures, composed of several workstations in parallel, which are used to assemble the parts of the aircrafts. tasks should be scheduled to be performed in these workstations in order to minimize the make-span; however, in addition to the usual constraints, such as due dates and tasks priority, there are also limitations that prevent two tasks from being performed at the same time, in two adjacent workstations on the assembly fixture. a mixed integer model to represent the problem was proposed based on practical case studies of assembly fixtures schedules of an aeronautic company. the solutions generated by the model were implemented, in practice, with gains both in the use of the assembly fixtures studied, as well as in the use of the required labor.

Abstract: Esse artigo trata de um problema de programa o da produ o característico da indústria aeronáutica, envolvendo estruturas especiais de montagem chamadas gabaritos, compostas de diversos postos de trabalho em paralelo, na montagem de partes das aeronaves. Tarefas devem ser programadas para serem executadas nestes postos de trabalho de maneira a minimizar o makespan; porém, além das restri es usuais, como prazos de entrega das tarefas e precedências entre as tarefas, existem também restri es que impedem que duas tarefas possam ser executadas ao mesmo tempo em dois postos de trabalho adjacentes no gabarito. Com base no estudo de casos práticos de programa o de gabaritos de montagem de uma empresa aeronáutica, prop e-se um modelo de programa o linear inteira mista. As solu es geradas pelo modelo foram implementadas na prática com ganhos tanto na utiliza o dos gabaritos de montagem estudados quanto na utiliza o da m o de obra envolvida. Coarse Grained Density Functional Theories for Metallic Alloys: Generalized Coherent Potential Approximations and Charge Excess Functional Theory

Abstract: The class of the Generalized Coherent Potential Approximations (GCPA) to the Density Functional Theory (DFT) is introduced within the Multiple Scattering Theory formalism for dealing with, ordered or disordered, metallic alloys. All GCPA theories are based on a common ansatz for the kinetic part of the Hohenberg-Kohn functional and each theory of the class is specified by an external model concerning the potential reconstruction. The GCPA density functional consists of marginally coupled local contributions, does not depend on the details of the charge density and can be exactly rewritten as a function of the appropriate charge multipole moments associated with each lattice site. A general procedure based on the integration of the 'qV' laws is described that allows for the explicit construction the same function. The coarse grained nature of the GCPA density functional implies great computational advantages and is connected with the O(N) scalability of GCPA algorithms. Moreover, it is shown that a convenient truncated series expansion of the GCPA functional leads to the Charge Excess Functional (CEF) theory [E. Bruno, L. Zingales and Y. Wang, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 166401 (2003)] which here is offered in a generalized version that includes multipolar interactions. CEF and the GCPA numerical results are compared with status of art LAPW full-potential density functional calculations for 62, bcc- and fcc-based, ordered CuZn alloys, in all the range of concentrations. These extensive tests show that the discrepancies between GCPA and CEF are always within the numerical accuracy of the calculations, both for the site charges and the total energies. Furthermore, GCPA and CEF very carefully reproduce the LAPW site charges and the total energy trends.

Abstract: Fulminant hepatitis (FH) is a rare and devastating syndrome caused by a variety of hepatic insults. It characterized by severe metabolic derangements, neurologic complications and ultimately, multiorgan failure. Liver transplantation is the gold standard therapy for patients with irreversible FH. The major areas of current research in this field include the development of: hepatic support devices, strategies to accelerate hepatic regeneration and criteria for accurate prognostic classification of patients. This review aims to focus on the definitions, aetiologies and management strategies for FH.

Abstract: A Pratistic Motif in Serbian Church Slavic Literature In manuscript 159 MSPC the author verifies the presence of the same text that preceded Slovo ljubve in ms 29 of Narodna Biblioteka Srbije, lost during the bombardments of 1941. The motif of a fishermen enlightened by God that dates back to Emphrem Syrus’ Parenaesis appears in it. The author follows this motif in its tracks in older Serbian Church Slavonic literature (in the lives of St. Simeun and St. Sava by Domentijan), in Slavic and Byzantine liturgy, and in patristic literature (John Chrysostom) and hymnography (Roman the Melodist).

Abstract: The aim of this work is to extend the results of S. Nayatani about the index and the nullity of the Gauss map of the Costa-Hoffman-Meeks surfaces for values of the genus bigger than 37. That allows us to state that these minimal surfaces are non degenerate for all the values of the genus in the sense of the definition of J. Perez and A. Ros.
Power Consumption of Virtualization Technologies: an Empirical Investigation

Abstract: Virtualization is growing rapidly as a result of the increasing number of alternative solutions in this area, and of the wide range of application field. Until now, hypervisor-based virtualization has been the de facto solution to perform server virtualization. Recently, container-based virtualization - an alternative to hypervisors - has gained more attention because of lightweight characteristics, attracting cloud providers that have already made use of it to deliver their services. However, a gap in the existing research on containers exists in the area of power consumption. This paper presents the results of a performance comparison in terms of power consumption of four different virtualization technologies: KVM and Xen, which are based on hypervisor virtualization, Docker and LXC which are based on container virtualization. The aim of this empirical investigation, carried out by means of a testbed, is to understand how these technologies react to particular workloads. Our initial results show how, despite of the number of virtual entities running, both kinds of virtualization alternatives behave similarly in idle state and in CPU/Memory stress test. Contrarily, the results on network performance show differences between the two technologies.
