Abstract: Intrathoracic mesothelial cysts are congenital lesions due to an abnormal development of the pericardial coelom. They are generally unilocular and can develop in various sites. We describe a case of multicystic lesions in the anterior mediastinum of a 53-year-old woman discovered in a context of an encysted pleural effusion. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple cystic lesions in the anterior and posterior mediastinum. Surgery was carried out and histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of multiple coelomic cysts of the mediastinum.

Abstract: Papilloma is a rare benign tumor. Laryngeal location is the most frequent. The bronchial involvement remains unusual. It represents 0.38% of pulmonary tumors. We report the case of a 39-year-old, smoker man, who consulted for a cough following during six months with persistent radiological opacity despite antibiotic treatment. The physical examination was without particularities. Flexible bronchoscopy revealed a swollen endobronchial lesion completely obstructing the orifice of the intermediate trunk. Bronchial biopsies at this level showed inflammatory mucosa. The chest CT scan objectified an endobronchial tissular mass in the intermediate trunk. Pulmonary neoplasia was suspected. Diagnostic and therapeutic surgery was performed. Histopathological examination concluded to an endobronchial squamous papilloma.
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Polychlorobiphenyls in Fish from the Ionian Sea (Western Mediterranean)  [PDF]

Abstract: This study reports on the accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) in the muscle tissue of 11 species of fish from the Ionian Sea (Western Mediterranean). The results are consistent with previous studies that have reported now-generalized contamination by PCBs of the Mediterranean marine environment, as well as widespread diffusion of emerging contaminants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The Western Mediterranean Sea, from which the 11 fish species were collected, receives a heavy pollutant input from the urban and industrial areas along its coasts. Higher values of PCBs (average over 1.5 mg/kg f.w.) were observed in pelagic top predators (little tuna, bluefin tuna and swordfish). These same species also showed higher levels of PBDEs, averaging above 0.5 ng/g f.w. This puts a few fish species at the top of the food chain—such as bluefin tuna and swordfish—at particular risk, and the importance of these species in the human diet suggests the need for particular care in our food choices.

Abstract: Introduction: The high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is an important part in the diagnostic approach of interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with connective tissue diseases (CTD) by providing detailed information on the elementary lesion and the radiological pattern of ILD. Aim: to point out the role of HRCT in the diagnosis of ILD associated with CTD (ILD-CTD). Methods: A Retrospective descriptive study was conducted between 2008 and 2017. Data of 24 patients presenting ILD-CTD were collected. A review of HRCT was performed by a radiologist without knowledge of the CTD. Results: Predominant elementary lesion of ILD associated with dermatomyositis (9 cases) was ground glass opacity (n = 9) followed by consolidation (n = 6). Non Specific Interstitial Pneumonia (NSIP) was the most reported pattern (5 cases). Ground glass opacity was also the predominant elementary lesion for the 2 cases of scleroderma and in Sjögren’s syndrome (4 cases/5). NSIP was the predominant radiological presentation in these two CTD. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia revealed Sjögren’s syndrome in one case. In rheumatoid arthritis (6 cases), the elementary HRCT lesions were irregular interlobular septal thickening (n = 4) and honeycombing (n = 4) consistent with Usual Interstitial Pneumonia (UIP) in 2 cases. Similarly UIP has been described for the 2 patients with lupus and mixed connective tissue disease. Conclusion: HRCT plays an important role in the management of ILD-CTD. Description of the HRCT elementary lesions and the radiological pattern of ILD can be helpful for CTD’s diagnosis.

Cramer-Rao Lower Bound for NDA SNR Estimation from Linear Modulation Schemes over Flat Rayleigh Fading Channel

Abstract: In this contribution, Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation is addressed from linear modulation signals considering a transmission over a fading channel. We derived the expressions of Fisher information matrix entries to assess the optimal variance of any unbiased SNR estimator. Based on Monte Carlo integration, simulation results are drawn from several constellation densities and observation window sizes. For considered modulations, it is shown that the lower bound takes higher values as long as the modulation order increases. The derived bound provides an efficient standard for evaluating the performance of any unbiased non-data aided (NDA) SNR estimator from linear modulation signals over flat Rayleigh fading channel (FRFC).
La répartition des établissements industriels à Sfax : un schéma radio-concentrique The radioconcentric organisation of industrial establishments in Sfax

Abstract: Si l'organisation spatiale de l'industrie dans les agglomérations des pays développés a été suffisamment explorée, celle des villes des pays en développement qui ont été engagées dans une entreprise d'industrialisation n'a pas été, à notre connaissance, le sujet d'une étude géogra-phique quantitative. Mobilisant les techniques de l'analyse spatiale qui ont été peu appliquées jusqu'ici sur des terrains de pays dits émergents comme la Tunisie, nous avons tenté, à travers l'exemple de Sfax, d'analyser la répartition des établissements industriels. Les résultats mettent en évidence l'existence d'un schéma d'organisation radio-concentrique, largement dépassé, depuis les années cinquante dans les pays du Nord. L'étude des distributions des industries, thème privilégié de cet article et sans conteste problématique ancienne de la géographie, permet de combler les lacunes de la littérature géographique en Tunisie. Elle fournit des représentations visuelles et argumentées qui sont indispensables pour tous ceux qui ont à prendre des décisions ayant des incidences géographiques, qu'il s'agisse des chefs d'entreprises, des responsables de collectivités locales ou d'acteurs de l'aménagement. While the spatial organization of metropolitan industry in developed countries has been widely studied, cities in developing countries engaged in a process of industrialization, have not, to the best of our knowledge, benefited from similar, quantitative geographical studies. Making use of techniques infrequently applied in the study of developing economies, we have attempted to analyse the geographical distribution of industrial establishments in Sfax, Tunisia. The study reveals the existence of an archaic radioconcentric model in use among northern countries prior to the 1950's. The study of industrial space allocation, the main topic of our article and a classical problem of economic geography, makes it possible to close the gaps in the literature of Tunisian industrial geography. It provides essential visual and analytical support for decisions of geographical import, whether for company management, urban planners or developers.

Abstract: Following the example of the Exploratorium in San Francisco, interactive science museums are meant to be informal and enjoyable places where visitors, regardless of their age and background, are stimulated to practice their abilities to explore the world from a scientific point of view or to reacquire it in the case of adults who are far from science for professional reasons. Our study, which belongs to a relatively recent, but increasingly richer and complex tradition of researches on this topic, aims at contributing to answering the question whether, within the context of hands-on museums, this desired reacquisition of scientific exploration actually occurs for all visitors; more precisely, it aims at contributing to the discussion resulting from this question with reference to both possible answers and methods to find them. The study described below was carried out for a Science Communication Master thesis in Trieste (student: Monia Cardella, supervisor: Paola Rodari) and, therefore, it is inevitably limited: in fact, in order to deal with such a complex issue and to perform more detailed investigations on the field longer time and more resources would have been necessary. However, both methods used and results obtained from it, although provisional, are significant enough to deserve our attention.

Studies of Tectonic Motion from Helwan-Satellite Laser Ranging Station  [PDF]

Abstract: Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) is a proven space geodetic technique with significant potential for important contributions to scientific studies of tectonic motion. Currently, SLR is the most accurate available technique to determine the geocentric position with a reported precision in the order of few millimeters. Data gathered through SLR together with “Short Arc” mathematical algorithm became a highly precise tool to detect, monitor and calculate recent crustal movements through repeated measurements of the baselines between some stations on different tectonic plates. In this paper, the Short Arc mathematical model introduced in a previous paper was used to calculate the length of the baseline between Helwan-SLR station and other four fixed SLR stations, placed on different plates. Application of this model with the data gathered through a 4 year time interval gave repeatable results with very high accuracy (in the order of 4 cm).
