Methods: Data were collected twice before and twice following intervention using the Standardized Nordic Body Map Questionnaire, a rapid upper limb assessment for posture evaluation, and schoolbag weight measurement in children aged 8 and 11 years attending two schools within the central region of Malaysia. Results: Students who received the ergonomic intervention reported significant improvements in their sitting posture in a classroom environment and reduction of schoolbag weight as compared with the controls. Conclusion: A single-session, early intervention, group ergonomics education program for children aged 8 and 11 years is appropriate and effective, and should be considered as a strategy to reduce musculoskeletal pain among schoolchildren in this age group.

Improved NCTF Control Method for a Two-Mass Rotary Positioning Systems  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper describes an improvement of the existing nominal characteristic trajectory following (NCTF) as a practical control method for a two-mass rotary point-to-point (PTP) positioning systems. Generally, the NCTF controller consists of a nominal characteristic trajectory (NCT) and a PI compensator. A notch filter is added as a part of the compensator to eliminate the vibration due to the mechanical resonance of the plant. The objective of the NCTF controller is to make the object motion follow the NCT and end at its origin. The NCTF controller is designed based on a simple open-loop experiment of the object. The parameters identification and an exact model of the plant are not necessary for controller design. The performance response of improved NCTF controller is evaluated and discussed based on results of simulation. The effect of the design parameters on the robustness of the NCTF controller to inertia and friction variations is evaluated and compared with conventional PID controller. The results show that the improved NCTF controller has a better positioning performance and is much more robust than the PID controller.

Abstract: An intervention study was done from February 2009 until August 2009 with the objective of investigating the effectiveness of two ergonomics intervention programs in reducing ergonomic risk factors among 229 school children in 2nd Grade (age 8 years) and 5th Grade (age 11 years) in three schools. Group 1 (G1) assigned to one school, which implemented the ergonomically design furniture in their class (among 2nd and 5th grade students), Group 2 (G2) from other school implemented ergonomics program with intensive health promotion toward ergonomic awareness consisted with exercising and education to reduce MSD, while Group 3 from another school selected as Control Group (Cx). Musculoskeletal symptoms were recorded using modified nordiq body map questionnaires. Modified Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) was used to assess the awkward posture of the school children. Ergonomic awareness test performed namely Ergonomic Quiz (EQ) to evaluate the awareness level before and after ergonomic intervention programs. Tanita weight measurement was used to measure school bag weight and students weight. Weight of the bag, RULA score and EQ were used as main indicator to analyze the effectiveness of programs to reduce ergonomic risks. Abstract: The development and economic growth of a nation is closely related to its available transportation system. Good and efficient road transport infrastructure facilities will promote industrial and socio-economic development. To provide safety and comfort to road users, a comprehensive road maintenance schedule must be formulated and adopted to ensure those roads are in good condition at all times. Preventive maintenance works, such as road rehabilitation will help to reduce the major road repairs and expenditure. Prior to this, a good database, gathered through GIS will be necessary in order to ensure maintenance is done effectively. Geographic Information System (GIS) is said to be one of the useful tools that can be utilized to manage database in road maintenance engineering. This system is capable of storing, managing, analyzing, computing and displaying all forms of geographical data for road maintenance works. In this study, the author has adopted GIS application software – ArcView, and has reviewed and analyzed its effectiveness in managing road database. These data are then used to assist the management to ensure effective and systematic road maintenance. A typical model of roads in Penang, Malaysia is used as a case study to further clarify the application of GIS in road maintenance.

Abstract: Penelitian ini merupakan satu usaha untuk memaparkan tentang kewujudan pengetahuan orang Melayu yang mendalam dalam menghadapi fenomena sakit-demam atau keuzuran. terdapat dua bentuk perubatan yang digunakan oleh orang Melayu iaitu secara personalistik dan naturalistik. Malangnya perubatan personalistik sering diketengahkan sebagai satu-satunya kaedah perubatan yang sering di amalkan oleh orang Melayu. Sebaliknya tidak ramai yang mengetahui atau memahami bahawa perubatan Melayu juga telah maju dalam kaedah rawatan naturalistiknya. Perubatan naturalistik ini telah diakui oleh ramai ahli sains dan telah dibuktikan kemujarabannya melalui beberapa kajian yang telah dijalankan. Pada masa kini kaedah perubatan ini sedang berkembang dengan pesatnya sama ada melalui usaha penyelidikan terkini atau usaha pengkomersilannya secara besar-besaran.

Abstract: Kertas ini mengyelongkar tradisi keilmuan dan keintelektualan dalam tamadun Melayu di Nusantara. Masyarakat Melayu yang tersebar luar di alam Melayu atau Nusantara ini telah memiliki tradisi keilmuan dan pendidikan yang menjadi teras kepada kemunculan tamaduan yang tinggi dan cemerlang. Tradisi keilmuan ini kemudiannya menjadi marak melalui kedatangan Islam di Nusantara apabila ia merevolosikan tradisi ini kerana Islam memang amat manganjurkan kepada keilmuan dan keintelektualan. gelombang ini kemudiannya melahirkan beberapa kerajaan Islam yang menjadikan pendidikan keilmuan sebagai suatu yang amat penting dan amat digalakkan. Kemudiannya, lahirlah Pasai, Melaka, Acheh Demak, dan lain-lain menjadi pusat keilmuan dan pendidikan di Nusantara. Teratak keilmuan dan pendidikan ini telah melahirkan tokoh-tokoh Melayu yang tersohor sepanjang zaman. Lantaran, ketinggian ketamadunan Melayu tidak terletak kepada kehebatan budaya meterialnya, sebaliknya terletak kepada kehebatan dan ketinggian tradisi keilmuan dan keintelektualannya. Tradisi keilmuan dan pendidikan merupakan tradisi umat Melayu-Islam sepanjang zaman.

Abstract: Kertas ini membicarakan tentang persoalan pertembungan bahasa dan jati diri Melayu yang berhadapan dengan proses globalisasi yang sedang berlaku sekarang. Antara persoalan besar ialah sejauhmanakah bahasa Melayu mampu terus menjadi bahasa ilmu untuk menjadi pemangkin pembinaan ketamadunan bangsa yang tinggi terutama dalam bidang sains dan teknologi. Sehubungan itu, kertas ini akan meneliti persaingan bahasa Melayu dengan bahasa Inggeris dan kewajaran bahasa Inggeris menggantikan bahasa Melayu dalam pembelajaran sains dan teknologi. Terdapat empat mitos tentang bahasa Melayu vs bahasa Inggeris iaitu bahasa sains dan teknologi; kejayaan pembudayaan sains dan teknologi bergantung kepada kejayaan penguasaan bahasa Inggeris; bahasa Melayu faktor pelawat penguasaan sains dan teknologi serta bahasa Melayu bergantung pada nasib sains dan teknologi Melayu Islam. Penulis akan meneliti apakah semua mitos ini mempunyai asas yang kuat untuk dipegang atau hanyalah satu pandangan yang dibuat secara tergesa-gesa tanpa sebarang bukti penyelidikan. Di samping itu, selain isu bahasa, pensejagatan juga dikatakan perlu ditangani melalui perubahan paradigma baru di kalangan orang Melayu. Lahirlah gagasan yang dikaitkan dengan revolusi mental dan anjakan paradigma atau penglahiran Melayu baru. Lantaran itu penulis akan meneliti pemikiran Melayu tradisi dalam melihat persoalan Melayu baru dan Jati diri ini. Isu bahasa dan jati diri ini amat penting untuk dilihat dari sudut yang betul bagi mendapat gambaran yang sebenarnya terutama dalam usaha kita membina satu bangsa yang maju dan bertamadun tinggi.
X-Raying Rainfall Pattern and Variability in Northeastern Nigeria: Impacts on Access to Water Supply  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper is premised on the hypothesis that the amount of rainfall in Nigeria decreases with increasing distance from the coastal areas to the north semi arid lands. This belief widely held in some circles does not really follow this pattern due to other climatic factors. This paper examined rainfall pattern and its variability in northeastern Nigeria and its impacts on access to water supply. Data on the mean monthly rainfall over a period of 33 years (1970-2002) were collected from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) in Abuja, Nigeria. The result of the analysis indicates that the mean annual rainfall in the study area is not dependent on distance but some other climatic factors such as relief, solar radiation, temperature, winds, and nature of soil among others. Thus, the amount of rainfall received in Taraba and Borno states which are located in the southern most and extreme end of the study area respectively were higher than that of Gombe state which lies in between them.
