Parents Perceived Quality of Life for Children with Cochlear Implants  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of the study is to identify the important aspects of quality of life assessed in children with cochlear implant. Parental Perspective questionnaire with modified in Bangla was used as a data collection tool in this study. Data was collected through face to face interview with 25 parents of children with Cochlear Implant (CI) attended at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka. Among 25 cochlear implant children, the boys (12) and girls (13) were nearly the same. Results indicated that the majority of the children had difficulties with communication with known people (48.00%) and before implantation children with CI obtained no benefit at all from hearing aids (76.00%). However, the research finding shows that they are largely satisfied with the outcomes from implantation. Improvement of social relationship, family well-being, within the family, educational condition, and self-reliance was satisfactorily reported by the parents. This study would help the clinician, speech pathologist, children and parents to raise awareness about the impact of CI and its treatment.
Travelling Waves: Interplay of Low to High Reynolds Number and Tan-Cot Function Method to Solve Burger’s Equations  [PDF]

Abstract: We study the nonlinear parabolic equations for travelling wave solutions of Burger’s equations. The purpose of the present work is to study various types of Burger’s equations describing waves and those are based on nonlinear equations. We focus on to describe the analytic solution in the special pattern of travelling wave solutions using tan-cot function method. We discuss about inviscid and viscous version of Burger’s equation for fluid flow and investigate the effects of internal friction of a fluid via Reynolds number. By changing the velocity amplitude, the nature of flows with shock wave and disturbance are observed. For numerical solutions, the Crank-Nicolson scheme is introduced to establish the wave solutions.
Correlation Of Aspiration Cytology Of Lymph node With Clinical Stage, Dermal And Lymph node Histopathology Of Leprosy

Abstract: The present study attempted to correlate, in leprosy, the clinical with dermal and lymphnode histopathologies and aspiration smear cytology from lymphnodes. The last procedure is easy, less traumatic and can be done in the outpatient department. The study revealed overall enlargement of lymphnode in 50% cases of leprosy, being 90.9% in TT: 33.33% in BT: 60% in BB: 83.33% in BL and 88.9% in LL cases. Histopathologies of skin and lymphnode corroborated totally in clinical TT & BT cases but this corroboration decreased as one moved down the spectrum, being 60.7% in BB: 60% in BL and 50% in LL (clinical versus dermal histopathology) and the figures were 66.7% in BB 80% in BL and75% in LL (clinical versus lymphnode histopathology). So it is apparent that towards tuberculoid end, histopathologies of skin and lymphnodes were reflected in clinical diagnosis. Towards lepromatous end, though skin histology sometimes lagged behind, lymphnode histology was more advanced and was often consistent with clinical diagnosis. The aspiration cytology corroborated more consistently with the clinical diagnosis than skin histopathology and almost similar to lymphnode histopathology. Cytology reflected immune status of the patients.
Studies on the reconstitution properties of stored dried spotted spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus guttatus)

Abstract: A study was carried out to compare and evaluate the percentage of reconstitution media (tap water, hot water, 5% NaCl and 5% Ca(OH)2) uptake of stored dried control, irradiated (1 kGy) and heat treated (50 °C) spotted spanish mackerel Scomberomorus guttatus at room temperature for 1, 4 and 24 dipping hours upto 180 days of storage period after each 30 days of intervals. Maximum media uptake found in 5% Ca(OH)2followed by 5% NaCl, hot water and tap water in all samples. The highest (121.81%) and lowest (4.07%) percentage of media uptake observed in Ca(OH)2 and tap water respectively from the irradiated fish sample. This study also reveals that percentage of media uptake depends on reconstitution medias and dipping hours significantly but not with the various samples.
Structural Health Monitoring Using Distributed Macro-Strain Response

Abstract: In this study, a damage identification technique based on the distributed Macro-Strain (MS) response measurements is presented. The fundamental concept of the proposed technique is that the ratio of the strain measured at a target location and a reference location of a beam-like structure is constant for a given condition of the structure. The proposed damage identification technique was verified using the laboratory experimental results. In addition, noise was added to the measured response to simulate the real field condition. The proposed technique was able to identify damage in a noise-polluted environment. The proposed technique was also applied for the health monitoring of a highway bridge in Japan. Long-gage distributed sensors were deployed to collect the traffic induced strain responses. Results from the onsite experiment show the potentials of the proposed technique for practical application.
Exploring the Catalytic Activity of Zirconia, Zirconia Supported Metals and Metal Oxides for Oxidation of Phenol  [PDF]

Abstract: Catalytic oxidation/degradation of phenol with molecular oxygen in aqueous medium by Zirconia, zirconia supported metals and metal oxides at low temperature were studied in a three necked batch reactor. The catalysts prepared were characterized by modern techniques like XRD, SEM and EDX. The activities of different catalysts for the oxidation of phenol in aqueous medium were found to be in the order; Pt-Pd/ZrO2 > Bi-Pt/ZrO2 > Bi-Pd/ZrO2> Pt/ZrO2 > Pd/ZrO2 > Cu/ZrO2> Mn/ZrO2 > Bi/ZrO2. The enhanced catalytic activity of Bi-Pt/ZrO2 is attributed to Bi which in contact with Pt particles promotes its catalytic activity. In short, catalytic oxidation was found to be an effective tool, for the removal of phenol, from industrial waste water.

Abstract: Anterior urethral valve is an uncommon abnormality whose etiology is uncertain, unlike in the case of posterior urethral valve. Glanular anterior urethral valve is even rarer. We present an unusual case of anterior urethral valve, which presented with acute urinary retention and was successfully managed with excision and glans reconstruction. A history of poor stream and dribbling, recurrent urinary tract infections and palpable penile or peno-scrotal mass strongly points to the diagnosis of anterior urethral valve. A voiding cystourethrogramme confirms the diagnosis. It can cause early proximal urinary tract damage and renal failure if not intervened in time. Early surgical intervention will prevent the onset of uremia. Transurethral resection is the treatment of choice.

Abstract: In this work, synthesis and swelling behavior of a superabsorbent hydrogel based on Pectin (Pc) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were investigated. A mechanism for hydrogel formation was proposed and the structure of the product was es-tablished using FTIR spectroscopy. The Pc-poly (sodium acrylate-co-acrylamide) hydrogel exhibited a pH-responsive swelling-deswelling behavior at pH’s 2 and 8. This on-off switching behavior provides the hydrogel with the potential to control delivery of bioactive agents. Release profiles of ibuprofen (IBU), a poor water-soluble drug, from the hydro-gels were studied under both simulated gastric and intestinal pH conditions.

Abstract: Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric method for evaluating the relative efficiency of decision making units (DMUs) on the basis of multiple inputs and outputs. The context-dependent DEA is introduced to measure the relative attractiveness of a particular DMU when compared to others. In real-world situation, because of incomplete or non-obtainable information, the data (Input and Output) are often not so deterministic, therefore they usually are imprecise data such as interval data, hence the DEA models becomes a nonlinear programming problem and is called imprecise DEA (IDEA). In this paper the context-dependent DEA models for DMUs with interval data is extended. First, we consider each DMU (which has interval data) as two DMUs (which have exact data) and then, by solving some DEA models, we can find intervals for attractiveness degree of those DMUs. Finally, some numerical experiment is used to illustrate the proposed approach at the end of paper.
Multilayer Hex-Cells: A New Class of Hex-Cell Interconnection Networks for Massively Parallel Systems  [PDF]

Abstract: Scalability is an important issue in the design of interconnection networks for massively parallel systems. In this paper a scalable class of interconnection network of Hex-Cell for massively parallel systems is introduced. It is called Multilayer Hex-Cell (MLH). A node addressing scheme and routing algorithm are also presented and discussed. An interesting feature of the proposed MLH is that it maintains a constant network degree regardless of the increase in the network size degree which facilitates modularity in building blocks of scalable systems. The new addressing node scheme makes the proposed routing algorithm simple and efficient in terms of that it needs a minimum number of calculations to reach the destination node. Moreover, the diameter of the proposed MLH is less than Hex-Cell network.
