Cued aversive classical conditioning in humans: The role of trait-anxiety  [PDF]

Open Journal of Psychiatry (OJPsych) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpsych.2013.32021
Abstract:

No study so far has specifically addressed the influence of individual differences in trait-anxiety on aversive classical conditioning as indexed by the startle reflex response. We compared the startle reflex responses between participants classified as high (n = 25) and low (n = 26) in trait-anxiety while undergoing a single-cue aversive classical conditioning procedure. High trait-anxiety group showed a greater startle response to the CS relative to the ITI at the post-acquisition compared with the pre-acquisition phase. Low trait-anxiety group did not show such a clear pattern of conditioning, and results from this group seem to be concealed by differences in the startle responses to the CS and the ITI during the pre-acquisition phase. However, a post-hoc analysis in which such differences at pre-conditioning were removed showed no conditioning effects in low trait-anxiety participants. Taking together, these results suggest differences between high and low trait-anxiety groups in the acquisition of the CS-US association. However, further research should clarify the unexpected pattern of responses shown by low trait-anxiety group.

Adaptive and application dependent runtime guided hardware prefetcher reconfiguration on the IBM POWER7

Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: Hardware data prefetcher engines have been extensively used to reduce the impact of memory latency. However, microprocessors' hardware prefetcher engines do not include any automatic hardware control able to dynamically tune their operation. This lacking architectural feature causes systems to operate with prefetchers in a fixed configuration, which in many cases harms performance and energy consumption. In this paper, a piece of software that solves the discussed problem in the context of the IBM POWER7 microprocessor is presented. The proposed solution involves using the runtime software as a bridge that is able to characterize user applications' workload and dynamically reconfigure the prefetcher engine. The proposed mechanisms has been deployed over OmpSs, a state-of-the-art task-based programming model. The paper shows significant performance improvements over a representative set of microbenchmarks and High Performance Computing (HPC) applications.
Effectiveness of a psycho-educational group program for major depression in primary care: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a psychoeducational program, which includes aspects of personal care and healthy lifestyle, in patients with mild/moderate depression symptoms in Primary Care (PC).In a randomized, controlled trial, 246 participants over 20 years old with ICD-10 major depression were recruited through nurses/general practitioners at 12 urban Primary Care Centers (PCCs) in Barcelona. The intervention group (IG) (n=119) received a group psychoeducational program (12 weekly, 1.5 h sessions led by two nurses) and the control group (CG) (n=112) received usual care. Patients were assessed at baseline and at, 3, 6 and 9 months. The main outcome measures were the BDI, EQ-5D and remission based upon the BDI.231 randomized patients were included, of whom 85 had mild depression and 146 moderate depression. The analyses showed significant differences between groups in relation to remission of symptoms, especially in the mild depression group with a high rate of 57% (p=0.009) at post-treatment and 65% (p=0.006) at 9 month follow up, and only showed significant differences on the BDI at post-treatment (p=0.016; effect size Cohen’s d’=.51) and at 6 and 9 month follow-up (p= 0.048; d’=.44).In the overall and moderate sample, the analyses only showed significant differences between groups on the BDI at post-treatment, p=0.02 (d’=.29) and p=0.010 (d’=.47), respectively. The psychoeducation group improved significantly on the EQ-5D at short and long-term.This psychoeducational intervention is a short and long-term effective treatment for patients with mild depression symptoms. It results in a high remission rate, is recommended in PC and can be carried out by nurses with previous training. In moderate patients, group psychoeducation is effective in the short-term.Clinical Trials.gov identifier NCT00841737As depressive disorders are major public health problems with a prevalence of major depression in Europe of 8.56% [1] and, strikingly, 5-16
Trust in media information
Miquel Rodrigo
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2003,
Abstract: For Miquel Rodrigo, cultural diversity places informative discourse in a crisis because it needs new categories to explain reality, and these categories are not always shared by journalists and by those who receive the information. Instead of gaining an easy trust drawnfrom stereotypes, he proposes, as a better way of overcoming the crisis, fostering the existence of sceptical readers. The media interprets social phenomena with its personal and professional limitations. The sceptical reader is one who knows why the media says what it says and understands that its truths are not absolute, since all ways of seeing are ways of concealing. The relationship between scepticism and trust is that which opposes a blind, acrylic and capitulating trust.
