Climatic differences and similarities between Indian and East Asian Monsoon regions of China over the last millennium: a perspective based mainly on stalagmite records.

Abstract: Cave sediments, especially stalagmites, have been providing absolute dated climate records that can extend from the present to over 500,000 years ago. Based on the reconstructed temperature time series, a comprehensive overview of the climatic differences and similarities between the Indian and the East Asian Monsoon regions of China over the last millennium is presented. Evidence from accurately dated and high-resolution records including stalagmites, ice cores and tree rings show that there was a “Medieval Warm Period” (around 1000 to 1400 AD) in north and east China where climate is dominated by the East Asian monsoon; whilst no such interval is evident in the records including stalagmites and ice cores from southwest China where climate is dominated by the Indian monsoon. However, both regions underwent a significant cooling during the Little Ice Age (around the mid 1500s to the 1800s). The result achieved here may allow a possibility of distinguishing the boundary between Indian monsoon and East Asian monsoon regions over the last millennium with increase of climate records, especially stalagmites that are mostly suitable for accurate U/Th dating and/or lamina counting.
The Impact of Consumers Witness Front-Line Service Employee Complaints on Corporate Brand Attitudes  [PDF]

Abstract: In the past, the research on complaints mainly focused on employee-employer dichotomy, focusing on the impact of employee complaints on employee performance. But in the actual work, front-line service workers and consumers have a lot of service contacts. If consumers witness complaints from front-line service workers, what impact will it have on corporate brand attitude? Based on the third-party perception perspective and the theory of moral justice, with perception of corporate morality as the mediating variable, this paper verifies that perceived corporate controllability by first-line service employees’ complaints can significantly affect consumer brand attitude, and introduces the boundary condition of perceived employee complaints. When perceived employee complaints are health factors, the more controllable the first-line service employees’ complaints are perceived. The higher the perceived corporate ethics, the lower the consumer brand attitude. When perceived employee complaints are motivating factors, there is no difference in the impact of perceived corporate controllability and low perceived employee complaints on consumer brand attitude. The paper examines the impact of corporate controllability on consumers perceived by the complaints of front-line service employees witnessed by consumers. It also studies the spillover effect of employee complaints from the perspective of third-party perception, which has important guiding value for guiding the management of front-line service employees and sustainable development.

Abstract: Recently, proper use of the statistical methods in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has received increased attention. Statistical inference based on hypothesis testing is the foundation of clinical trials and evidence-based medicine. In this article, the authors described the methodological differences between literature published in Chinese and Western journals in the design and analysis of acupuncture RCTs and the application of basic statistical principles. In China, qualitative analysis method has been widely used in acupuncture and TCM clinical trials, while the between-group quantitative analysis methods on clinical symptom scores are commonly used in the West. The evidence for and against these analytical differences were discussed based on the data of RCTs assessing acupuncture for pain relief. The authors concluded that although both methods have their unique advantages, quantitative analysis should be used as the primary analysis while qualitative analysis can be a secondary criterion for analysis. The purpose of this paper is to inspire further discussion of such special issues in clinical research design and thus contribute to the increased scientific rigor of TCM research.
Under-Treatment and Poorer Survival Outcomes in Elderly Breast Cancer Patients in Singapore: A Comparison with Younger Patients in a Tertiary Institution  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: The numbers of elderly patients with breast cancers are increasing with an ageing population, yet clinical research on these patients is still lacking. This study aims to examine the differences between elderly patients and their younger counterparts, with a view to optimize management plans for the former. Methods: Patients ≥ 40 years old with histologically proven breast cancer between 1991 and 2008 were identified from our database, and grouped according to age for analyses: old elderly (≥75 years), young elderly (65 to 74 years) and young (40 to 64 years). Clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment and survival rates were compared across the 3 groups. Results: There were 103 (11.53%) old elderly, 147 (16.5%) young elderly and 643 (72.0%) young patients. The 2 elderly groups presented at later stages, received less adjuvant or palliative chemotherapy (P < 0.001), and less adjuvant radiotherapy (P < 0.001), compared to the younger patients. Both breast cancer specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) in the old elderly (CSS: 64.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 53.4% - 73.8%), OS: 46.4% (95% CI: 35.6% - 56.4%)) and young elderly group (CSS: 82.4% (95% CI: 74.4% - 88.0%) OS: 78.6% (95% CI: 70.4% - 84.8%)) were lower than the young patient group (CSS: 84.9% (95% CI: 81.6% - 87.7%), OS: 83.4% (95% CI: 80.0% - 86.3%)) at 5 years. Conclusion: Our findings showed that clinicopathologic characteristics of elderly breast cancer patients differed from their younger counterparts. Poorer survival outcomes among our elderly patients may be the result of their under-treatment.

A review of online trust branding strategies of financial services industries in Malaysia and Australia

Abstract: This study spotlighted on the financial services industry specifically in the creation of brand trust across online channel, which constructs a significant contribution to the under-researched area of online branding. Content analysis was performed on the web sites of top ten bank retailers in Malaysia and Australia. An analysis of the extent to which the retailers were using their web sites to provide online financial services and brand information provided a context for a more detailed analysis of online trust branding strategies, including communicating brand trust and value, and building brand experience relationships via online financial services. Bank retailers in Australia provided guarantee statements and variety of financial services across online channel, offering comprehensive online strategy for brand trust and brand experience. There was indication of some innovative practice, but also scope for substantial further improvement of the concept of online trust branding. Conversely the bank retailers in Malaysia only provided basic online financial services and no guarantee of refund for any financial fraud cases. Their use of the online channel to communicate brand trust, brand value, and to endorse brand relationships was underdeveloped.
A Review of Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia (CGCM) and Its Contribution to Small and Medium Enterprises

Abstract: The main focus of this study is on the Small and Medium Size Enterprise (SMEs) which will benefit to both the government and the SMEs traders. The credit facilities from financial institutions and guarantee cover on such facilities are given without any collateral. The government can develop more packages of service that allow the traders to have more options to choose from! Besides that, the businessman or SMEs traders have the advantage because of the Credit Guarantee Corporation (CGC) will always be there to help their business grow. The research project explores the factors affecting the performance of the entrepreneurs and to find out how SME businesses achieve high growth. On the other hand, this study has also provided much knowledge from the performance survey of growth of SMEs in Malaysia and any weaknesses in the system which can be reinforced with positive measures.
Review of Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia (CGCM) Initiatives to Enhance Small and Medium Enterprises Performance

Abstract: The prime focus of this study is to review the initiatives by CGC to enhance Small and Medium Size Enterprise (SMEs) which will benefit both the government and the SMEs traders. A review of the literature shows that small firms experience difficulties in accessing the credit market due to informational asymmetries. In this paper, we establish that even small firms may improve their access to finance with the help of government agencies such as the Credit Guarantee Corporation (CGC). CGC works closely with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) in terms of its operations and progress. Hence, the government can develop more packages of service which enables SMEs to have more options to access financing, financial restructuring ,advisory services, information, training and marketing coordination Moreover with the availability of such services, the SMEs have the advantage as the Credit Guarantee Corporation (CGC) will facilitate their business growth. This article explores the variables affecting the performance of the entrepreneurs and to ascertain how SME businesses can achieve high growth. It further provides evidence on how Credit Guarantee Corporation (CGC) has helped SMEs in Malaysia.
