On Exploiting Temporal, Social, and Geographical Relationships for Data Forwarding in Delay Tolerant Networks  [PDF]

Abstract:

Because of unpredictable node mobility and absence of global information in Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs), effective data forwarding has become a significant challenge in such network. Currently, most of existing data forwarding mechanisms select nodes with high cumulative contact capability as forwarders. However, for the heterogeneity of the transient node contact patterns, these selection approaches may not be the best relay choices within a short time period. This paper proposes an appropriate data forwarding mechanism, which combines time, location, and social characteristics into one coordinate system, to improve the performance of data forwarding in DTNs. The Temporal-Social Relationship and the Temporal-Geographical Relationship reveal the implied connection information among these three factors. This mechanism is formulated and verified in the experimental studies of realistic DTN traces. The empirical results show that our proposed mechanism can achieve better performance compared to the existing schemes with similar forwarding costs (e.g. end-to-end delay and delivery success ratio).

Abstract: Semantic processing is a high level cognition function of the human brain. It has been argued intensively whether this process could be accomplished in the absence of awareness. Continuous flash suppression (CFS) is a powerful approach to create stable unconscious state. In this study, subjects were required to observe a series of paired Chinese words and judge the correlation between them in CFS paradigm. A negative component of event related potential, N400, and a Brain symmetry index were used to measure whether the meaning of the paired stimulus was registered in subliminal semantic processing. Analysis didn’t detect a significant difference in N400 response and EEG signal symmetry between correlated and uncorrelated pairs under unconscious condition. These results support the view that semantic information of Chinese character processing is absent without consciousness created by CFS.

Abstract: To support business integration with partners of service-oriented enterprise applications, this paper combined enterprise service bus (ESB) based resource integration infrastructure and business process management methods. It gave a gene-ral-purpose reference model of ESB along with the reviews of three business process integration protocols. The example enterprise portal application developed by Weblogic service-oriented platform demonstrates that business process integration based on ESB and ebXML, RosettaNet or BPEL is feasible and superior to legacy solutions.

Abstract: The problem of water resource and water environment is the first-line problem to solve in order to realize the sustainable development of China (PREC,CPPCC,2000). Based upon the theory of green input-output (Lei, 1999/2000) and consulting Ningxia Input-output Table of 1997 (Statistical Bureau of Ningxia (SBN), 1997), Ningxia Statistical Yearbook of 1998 (SBN, 1998) and the sample data of related enterprises provided by Ningxia Bureau of Statistics, this paper constructs an extended input-output table which contains 12 sectors such as agriculture and coal mining and processing, and water resource use and sewage discharge. The paper also does some basic accounting analysis on the Ningxia water resource and water environment. Key words: green input-output accounting, water resource, green GDP, green charges
Strategies for Developing China's Software Industry

Abstract: The software industry is deemed an ideal target for a developing country to integrate into the world information and communications technology (ICT) market. On the one hand the industry is labor intensive, and the developing countries have a large labor surplus; on the other hand, it is a worldwide trend for developed countries to outsource a vast amount of low-end, software-related tasks to the low-cost countries and regions, which fits into some developing countries’ caliber nicely. India has often been cited as the role model for a developing country to tap into the world software market for its continuous success in the software export sector. In comparison, China’s software industry is still negligible in the world despite its sustained high economic growth rate since the economic reform took off in the late 1970s.This paper aims at examining strategies for developing China’s software industry. We use India as a reference because of the similarities of the two countries’ stages of economic development and the clear divergence in their ICT structures and development paths. Although the language barrier has often been singled out as the major obstacle for China’s software exports, we believe the major reasons for its underdevelopment can be ascribed to the following factors. On the national level, the government attention has been skewed toward the hardware sector in the ICT industry, and there is no clear national vision for the strategic direction for the software industry.On the industry and arm level, software development has been regarded as the art of individual creativity rather than an engineering process. As a result, the importance of quality and standards, the two important critical factors in software development, have been largely neglected. Perhaps an even more fundamental factor lies in the deeply rooted notion that software is an attachment to the hardware and should be a free product. The lack of intellectual property rights protection on the government side also contributes to the low spending on software, which further hinders software arms’ incentives to innovate.Extending Heeks’s model of strategic positioning for developing country software enterprises, we conclude that rather than following in the footsteps of India to promote export, China should focus on its domestic software services market in the near term and pursue a more balanced development strategy in the long run. VIRTUAL BACKBONE CONTENT ROUTING IN WIRELESS AD-HOC NETWORK

Abstract: We developed a new content routing based on the virtual backbone structure, which groups wireless nodes and contents into a virtual architecture. Our approach is scalable, works with local information,and does not rely on address information. The naming system uses flat naming to identify nodes and contents, and organizes these identifiers together. Backbone nodes can be selected automatically or predefined to direct their associated normal nodes in a local area. The normal nodes are guided by the backbone nodes to full fill the searching and routing processes. With a virtual structure, the searching performance can be improved by using the DHT technique.Experiments using ns2 simulator demonstrate that this virtual backbone routing architecture has the following significances: workable without being aware address in a mobile situation; scalable with the size of network; efficient in terms of the reduced hop counts and short end-to-end delay, and also resistant to the dead-end problem.
An Ensemble Data Mining and FLANN Combining Short-term Load Forecasting System for Abnormal Days

Abstract: A data mining and ENN combining short-term load forecasting system is proposed to deal with the weather-sensitive factors' influence on the power load in abnormal days. The statistic analysis showed that the accuracy of the short time load forecasting in abnormal days has increased greatly while the actual forecasting results of AnHui Province’s total electric power load and the comparative analysis have validated the effectiveness and the superiority of the strategy.
State Feedback Control for Stochastic Feedforward Nonlinear Systems

Abstract: This paper considers the state feedback stabilization problem for a class of stochastic feedforward nonlinear systems. By using the homogeneous domination approach, a state feedback controller is constructed to render the closed-loop system globally asymptotically stable in probability. A simulation example is provided to show the effectiveness of the designed controller. 1. Since the stochastic stability theory was established, the stabilization problems for stochastic lower-triangular nonlinear systems have made a great number of achievements in recent years; see, for example, [1–16] and the other references. Feedforward system is an another important class of nonlinear systems. From the theoretical viewpoint, they are not feedback linearizable and cannot be stabilized by the conventional backstepping method; to some extent, the control problem of these systems is more difficult than feedback systems. On the other hand, some simple physical models, for example, the cart-pendulum system in [17] and the ball-beam with a friction term in [18], can be described by equations with the feedforward form. In recent papers on feedforward systems, [19] studied delay-adaptive feedback for linear systems. The input delay compensation for forward complete and strict-feedforward nonlinear systems was solved by [20]. Reference [21] considered the adaptive stabilization problem for feedforward nonlinear systems with time delays by taking a nested saturation feedback. The global output feedback stabilization problem for system (1) without stochastic noise was addressed by [22]. Reference [23] investigated the state and output feedback control for a class of feedforward nonlinear time-delay systems. For high-order nonlinear feedforward systems, [24] considered global stabilization problem by using the generalized adding a power integrator method and a series of nested saturation functions, [25, 26] respectively dealt with the state feedback control for this kind of systems with time delay, but all these results are limited to deterministic systems. Quantum-defect theory of resonant charge exchange

Abstract: We apply the quantum-defect theory for $-1/R^4$ potential to study the resonant charge exchange process. We show that by taking advantage of the partial-wave-insensitive nature of the formulation, resonant charge exchange of the type of $^1$S+$^2$S can be accurately described over a wide range of energies using only three parameters, such as the \textit{gerade} and the \textit{ungerade} $s$ wave scattering lengths, and the atomic polarizability, even at energies where many partial waves contribute to the cross sections. The parameters can be determined experimentally, without having to rely on accurate potential energy surfaces, of which few exist for ion-atom systems. The theory further relates ultracold interactions to interactions at much higher temperatures.
Proton-hydrogen collision at cold temperatures

Abstract: We study the proton-hydrogen collision in the energy range from 0 to 5 K where the hyperfine structure of the hydrogen atom is important. The proper multichannel treatment of the hyperfine structure is found to be crucial at cold temperatures compared to the elastic approximation used for higher temperatures. Both elastic and hyperfine-changing inelastic processes are investigated using the newly developed multichannel quantum-defect theory (MQDT) as well as the traditional coupled-channel numerical method. Cross section results from the two methods coincide well throughout the energy range. The MQDT with a few parameters provide an efficient and basically analytic description of the proton-hydrogen interaction in this energy regime.
