Maternal Response of Perinatally Underfed Wistar Virgin Females Exposed to Newborn Rats  [PDF]
Manuel Salas, Mirelta Regalado, Carmen Torrero, Minerva Ortiz-Valladares, Lorena Rubio
Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science (JBBS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jbbs.2019.93007
Abstract: Nutrition plays a major role in the survival of the progeny, and its perinatal deficiencies delay physical development and interfere with social and cognitive performance later in life. The effects of early undernutrition on maternal social performance of sensitized adult virgin rats were evaluated. Several maternal and non-maternal responses were measured in virgin female Wistar rats randomly divided into two groups, control and early undernourished, during 19 days of chronic daily exposure to fresh foster pups in home-cage conditions. Underfed females (F0) received different percentages of a balanced diet during gestation. After birth, pups were underfed (F1) by alternating every 12 h between litters two lactating dams, one with ligated nipples. Weaning was at 25 days of age followed by an ad lib diet until postpartum day 90, when sensitized virgins were maternally tested daily for seven successive sessions. Significantly (p < 0.05) low body weight scores in UG F1 virgins of five different ages were observed. The UG F1 females expressed significantly (p < 0.05) lower frequency values in sniffing, licking, retrieving, crouching, and handling shavings, with clear prolonged sniffing, retrieving and handling shaving latencies towards the foster pups compared with CG F1 sensitized females. Self-grooming was not affected, whereas exploration was significantly reduced. Current findings suggest that perinatal undernutrition interfered the organization of a core neuronal circuitry underlying the mother-litter interactions involved in social and cognitive performance of sensitized adult virgins. Furthermore, the behavioral maternal alterations in F1 virgins may possibly generate a risky negative social environment to induce cognitive and/or brain disorders in later generations.
Enfoque práctico de la pubarquia precoz

Revista Venezolana de Endocrinología y Metabolismo , 2006,
Abstract: precocious pubarche was believed to be a normal variant of pubertad developpement, without long-term consequences.recently premature pubarche has been associated to endocrine-metabolic disturbances in the pre-puberal age and especially after puberty. at present, premature pubarche represent a predictive factor of ovarian and/or adrenal disfunction and metabolic syndrome. this article result from a bilbliographic review about this entity, the objective is to dispose of tools to make the adequate diagnosis, approach, treatment and follow-up.
?Como medir la innovación en el sector servicios?: Evidencia empírica en el sector financiero, Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela
Arzola,Minerva;
Universidad, Ciencia y Tecnología , 2007,
Abstract: evaluating the results of innovation management in enterprises represents a fundamental tool to measure their growth and competitive trend. in the services sector, research oriented to measure the innovation process is very scarce. the aim of the present work is to validate a methodology to measure the innovating activity in the services sector, mis?7 (methodology of innovation in services), applying it to the finance sector in ciudad guayana, venezuela. this method consists in measuring seven dimensions in the management of a services enterprise: leadership, planning, strategy, competence of human resources, processes, organization, customers satisfaction and social liability. the sector was divided into national entities and regional entities; a questionnaire was applied to gather information, the samples were over 30 people in every bank under evaluation, chosen from different levels of organization. results indicate that national banks which were evaluated have a consent of 83%, being the dimensions: customers satisfaction, organization, processes and social liability, the most outstanding aspects of services enterprises. the regional banks which were studied had a level of consent of 62.7% within the criteria of mis?7. the dimensions with best performance in this case were customers satisfaction, social liability and leadership. as a conclusion, the study showed that customers satisfaction is the dimension with the highest degree of development and interest for enterprises of the finance sector that underwent evaluation.

Recently premature pubarche has been associated to endocrine-metabolic disturbances in the pre-puberal age and especially after puberty. Proposal to Perform a High-Statistics Neutrino Scattering Experiment Using a Fine-grained Detector
Minerva Collaboration
Physics , 2004,
Abstract: The NuMI facility at Fermilab will provide an extremely intense beam of neutrinos for the MINOS neutrino-oscillation experiment. The spacious and fully-outfitted MINOS near detector hall will be the ideal venue for a high-statistics, high-resolution $\nu$ and $\nubar$--nucleon/nucleus scattering experiment. The experiment described here will measure neutrino cross-sections and probe nuclear effects essential to present and future neutrino-oscillation experiments. Moreover, with the high NuMI beam intensity, the experiment will either initially address or significantly improve our knowledge of a wide variety of neutrino physics topics of interest and importance to the elementary-particle and nuclear-physics communities.
A Mixture of g-priors for Variable Selection when the Number of Regressors Grows with the Sample Size
Minerva Mukhopadhyay
Statistics , 2015,
Abstract: We consider variable selection problem in linear regression using mixture of $g$-priors. A number of mixtures are proposed in the literature which work well, especially when the number of regressors $p$ is fixed. In this paper, we propose a mixture of $g$-priors suitable for the case when $p$ grows with the sample size $n$. We study the performance of the method based on the proposed prior when $p=O(n^b),~0
Las competencias en la educación científica. Tensiones desde el pragmatismo epistemológico
Valladares, Liliana;
Perfiles educativos , 2011,
Abstract: actually the focus on education by competences has become a matter of central interest in educational research because of its influence on many of the educational reforms. nevertheless the notion of competence, and particularly in scientific education, is still ambiguous and sets out many questions, not only for psychology, pedagogy and didactics, but also for the epistemology. this paper is a contribution to the understanding of the competences from the epistemological pragmatism. from this philosophical framework the author debates on three tensions within the relation between the competences and the process of knowledge: a) about the idea of knowledge; b) about the structure of competences; and c) about the role of the context. the author argües that in most of the definitions of competences the knowledge are reduced to their merely declarative aspect, instead of understanding it in a comprehensive way as actions.
A gênese da favela carioca. A produ??o anterior às ciências sociais
Valladares, Licia;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092000000300001
Abstract: the article shows the role occupied by the favela and its residents in political and social debate during the first half of the 20th century. it highlights the production of knowledge generated by journalists, physicians, engineers and social workers in the period preceding the development of social sciences and the university in brazil. it proposes that the process of construction of social representation of the favela, begun at that time, should be analyzed as a periodization beginning at a different moment than the periodization which is traditionally accepted based on the relation of the favela to the state and the type of political regime in power at different historical moments. the author suggests a periodization that has its initial moment marked by a myth of origin, euclides da cunha's vision of the settlement of canudos in his book os sert?es. in this period the favela of rio de janeiro is discovered and described by transposing the duality of coastal versus bush country (sert?es) to the urban scene, through the opposition of city to favela. following the discovery period is a second period when the favela is transformed into a social and urban problem, followed by a third period, when the idea of administrating the problem takes the form of concrete policies and measures. a fourth period includes the production of official data and the transformation of a local phenomenon into a national reality. the article shows that the centenary favela corresponds to an almost centennial social representation, an important legacy that today's social science can not disregard.
La educación científica intercultural y el enfoque de las capacidades
Valladares,Liliana;
Revista iberoamericana de ciencia tecnolog?-a y sociedad , 2011,
Abstract: this paper presents data related to the human development report of the indigenous people's lives and situation in mexico. this report reflects the social exclusion in which they live, particularly in the field of education and science education. the idea behind this paper is proposing the creation of an intercultural science education program as a strategy for expanding the capabilities of people to do and be what they have reason to value. intercultural science education is based on three conditions: 1) a pluralistic perspective of knowledge; 2) a socio-cultural perspective of education based on the achievement of competent performance on socially relevant situations; and 3) the conversion of the plurality of cognitive resources into real opportunities to improve people's lives and capabilities.
