The Relationship between Locus of Control, Test Anxiety, and Religious Orientation among Iranian EFL Students  [PDF]

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between locus of control (LOC), religious orientation (RO) and test anxiety (TA) among Iranian EFL learners. Furthermore, it scrutinized the role of gender on these variables. To achieve such goals, 100 Iranian EFL students (57 females, 43 males) studying English at Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman participated in the study. These students were randomly selected from among junior and senior students majoring in English Translation and English Literature. In order to obtain the required data, three questionnaires were utilized: Rotters’s (1966) locus of control scale (LOCS) to measure participants’ level of LOC, Sarason’s (1975) test anxiety scale (TAS) to measure participants’ TA, and Allport and Ross’s (1967) Religious Orientation Scale (ROS) to determine participants’ intrinsic or extrinsic religious orientation. For analysis of data, the Pearson Product Moment Correlation and T-test were used. The results revealed that there was a significant negative relationship between ILOC and TA and a significant positive relationship between ELOC and TA. Furthermore, there was a significant positive relationship between ILOC and IRO and a significant positive relationship between ELOC and ERO. Also, there was a significant negative relationship between ILOC and TA, and a significant positive relationship between ELOC and TA. Finally, there were not any significant differences among males and females regarding ILOC, ELOC, TA, IRO, and ERO.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among Iranian EFL teachers’ job satisfaction, self-efficacy, and their spiritual well-being. For this purpose, Job Satisfaction Survey (Spector, 1994), Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001), and Spiritual Well-being Scale (Paloutzian & Ellison, 1982) were used to collect data. The statistical procedure of Pearson Product Moment Correlation was utilized using SPSS version 21. The results of the statistical test yielded a significant negative relationship between teachers’ job satisfaction and their spiritual well-being and there was no relationship between their job satisfaction and self-efficacy. Moreover, there was not any significant relationship between teachers’ sense of efficacy and spiritual well-being.
Does Greenhouses Gases Emissions Reduction Harms Economic Growth? A Lesson from Togolese Economy  [PDF]

Abstract: The move towards lower greenhouses gases (GHGs) emissions as a solution to mitigate climate change is not costless. Focusing on Togolese economy, we assessed in this article the role played by the shift to renewable energy consumption path in the search for higher economic growth. Based on the Auto-Regressive Distributed Lagged (ARDL) model and with the help of time series data that cover the period 1983-2012, our estimates indicate that the effects of higher renewable energy consumption on per capita economic growth varies depending on time horizon. A 1% increase of renewable energy consumption reduces per capita economic growth by 2.33% in the short run while it boosts economic growth by 1.22% in the long run. These findings are partly explained by the high technological rigidity of the country. The message to be sold to policy makers is that switching from fossil energy technology to technology based on renewable energy is an expensive and time consuming process which is economically efficient only in the long run. Consequently, the country might need relatively considerable time to fully shift to a cleaner path in terms of carbon emissions mitigation. Thus, the country move towards lower GHGs emissions must be tactically managed and done progressively.

Abstract: Proper architectural design and appropriate usage of technology compatible with the environment in parts of a city which is called urban spaces, spaces such as parks, squares, sidewalks, shopping malls, leave a great impact on the quality of the urban life. Architectural design itself is born from technology; it means that, architecture is tied with science and technology, and is in direct contact with them. Technological innovations are one of the most important forces affecting the architectural changes. Nowadays, technological innovations are recognized as important and effective powers in development of sustainable environmental design. Today societies are constantly changing in terms of social, economic, political and technological alterations. Change is inevitable, and like all aspects of contemporary life, architecture should similarly offer an appropriate response to such changes for remaining sustainable, useful and appropriate. Architecture should also have a suitable response to laws and regulations of recent issues like safety, environment and energy conservation, and even personal security in architectural space. The purpose of this paper is, primarily an exploration of the concept of urban space, and in the second stage, it plans to review the fundamentals and impacts of using technology in urban spaces. The research method is descriptive-analytic and library research method is used for data collecting.

Chaotic Encryption Scheme Using 1-D Chaotic Map  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper proposes three different chaotic encryption methods using 1-D chaotic map known as Logistic map named as Logistic, NLFSR and Modified NLFSR according to the name of chaotic map and non-linear function involved in the scheme. The designed schemes have been crypt analyzed for five different methods for testing its strength. Cryptanalysis has been performed for various texts using various keys selected from domain of key space. Logistic and NLFSR methods are found to resist known plaintext attack for available first two characters of plaintext. Plaintext sensitivity of both methods is within small range along with medium key sensitivity. Identifiability for keys of first two of the scheme has not been derived concluding that methods may prove to be weak against brute-force attack. In the last modified scheme avalanche effect found to be improved compared to the previous ones and method is found to resist brute-force attack as it derives the conclusion for identifiability.
Identifying the dependency pattern of daily rainfall of Dhaka station in Bangladesh using Markov chain and logistic regression model  [PDF]

Abstract: Bangladesh is a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by wide seasonal variations in rainfall, moderately warm temperatures, and high humidity. Rainfall is the main source of irrigation water everywhere in the Bangladesh where the inhabitants derive their income primarily from farming. Stochastic rainfall models were concerned with the occurrence of wet day and depth of rainfall for different regions to model the daily occurrence of rainfall and achieved satisfactory results around the world. In connection to the Markov chain of different order, logistic regression is conducted to visualize the dependence of current rainfall upon the rainfall of previous two-time period. It had been shown that wet day of the previous two time period compared to the dry day of previous two time period influences positively the wet day of current time period, that is the dependency of dry-wet spell for the occurrence of rain in the rainy season from April to September in the study area. Daily data are collected from meteorological department of about 26 years on rainfall of Dhaka station during the period January 1985-August 2011 to conduct the study. The test result shows that the occurrence of rainfall follows a second order Markov chain and logistic regression also tells that dry followed by dry and wet followed by wet is more likely for the rainfall of Dhaka station and also the model could perform adequately for many applications of rainfall data satisfactorily.
Energy Based Simulation of Trabecular Bone Fracture Healing Using Finite Element and Fuzzy Logic  [PDF]

The trabecular bone fracture healing differs from diaphyseal fracture healing, in which trabecular bone heals based on intramembraneous ossification. The process includes a small callus formation, then woven bone forms, it follows by remodeling process to form regular trabecular bone. The objective of this study was to present an energy based model to simulate bone formation and remodeling during trabecular bone fracture healing. This modeling mainly focused on the mechanical factors. The model distinguishes three basic type of tissue: bone, cartilage and soft tissue. In order to determine tissue differentiation a fuzzy controller was proposed. An algorithm was developed to link the fuzzy logic controller to a finite element model (FEM) of trabecular bone. In general, finite element analysis provides input for fuzzy controller. Based on the input data, the fuzzy system selects the type of tissue to build. Strain energy density was used as the mechanical stimulus and a new parameter was incorporated in to the healing process as the remodeling index.

Hermite Matrix Polynomial Collocation Method for Linear Complex Differential Equations and Some Comparisons  [PDF]

In this paper, we introduce a Hermite operational matrix collocation method for solving higher-order linear complex differential equations in rectangular or elliptic domains. We show that based on a linear algebra theorem, the use of different polynomials such as Hermite, Bessel and Taylor in polynomial collocation methods for solving differential equations leads to an equal solution, and the difference in the numerical results arises from the difference in the coefficient matrix of final linear systems of equations. Some numerical examples will also be given.

Relating Fish Hg to Variations in Sediment Hg, Climate and Atmospheric Deposition  [PDF]

Abstract: This article addresses total fish Hg concentrations (THg) by variations in lake Sediment THg, atmospheric Hg deposition (atmHgdep), and climate, i.e., mean annual precipitation (ppt) and air temperature. The Fish THg data were taken from the 1967-to-2010 Fish Mercury Datalayer (FIMDAC). This compilation was standardized for 12-cm long Yellow Perch in accordance with the USGS National Descriptive Model for Mercury in Fish (NDMMF [1]), and documents Fish THg across 1936 non-contaminated lakes in Canada. About 40% of the standardized Fish THg variations related positively to increasing ppt and Sediment THg, but negatively to increasing mean annual July temperature (TJuly). Only 20% of the Fish THg variations related positively to atmHgdep alone. Increasing TJuly likely influences Fish Hg through increased lake and upslope Hg volatilization, in-fish growth dilution, and temperature-induced demethylization. FIMDAC Fish THg effectively did not change over time while atmHgdep decreased. Similarly, the above Fish Hg trends would likely not change much based on projecting the above observations into the future using current 2070 climate-change projections across Canada and the continental US. Regionally, the projected changes in Fish Hg would mostly increase with increasing ppt. Additional not-yet mapped increases are expected to occur in subarctic regions subject to increasing permafrost decline. Locally, Fish THg would continue to be affected by upwind and upslope pollution sources, and by lake-by-lake changes in water aeration and rates of lake-water inversions.
