Examining the Types of Mathematical Tasks Used to Explore the Mathematics Instruction by Elementary School Teachers  [PDF]

Abstract:

This study examined the different types of mathematical tasks used in the classroom to explore the nature of mathematics instruction of three sixth grade teachers in an elementary school. Case studies, instructional observations, and classroom artifacts were used to collect data. The results showed that the three teachers used different types of mathematical tasks and implementation methods. One teacher focused on high cognitive demand tasks, most of which involved substantial group discussion and students working cooperatively. Even though the other two also used many high cognitive demand tasks, these were mainly presented via teacher-student dialogue. By examining the types of mathematical tasks and their implementation, it was found that the group discussion tasks were generally all high cognitive demand tasks, in which the students fully explained the solution process. As for the tasks administered through teacher-student dialogue, due to the usage of large amounts of closed-ended dialogue, the students used low cognition to solve the mathematical tasks and did not have the opportunity to completely explain their thinking about the solutions. Thus, in order to fully understand the nature of mathematics instruction by teachers, there should be simultaneous consideration of the types of mathematical tasks used as well as how the tasks were implemented.

Abstract: The meteorological high-performance computing resource is the support platform for the weather forecast and climate prediction numerical model operation. The scientific and objective method to evaluate the application of meteorological high-performance computing resources can not only provide reference for the optimization of active resources, but also provide a quantitative basis for future resource construction and planning. In this paper, the concept of the utility value B and index compliance rate E of the meteorological high performance computing system are presented. The evaluation process, evaluation index and calculation method of the high performance computing resource application benefits are introduced.

Abstract: In this study, we analyze the development experience of eco-tourism in different regions of china to find the common regional convergence which is checked with ADF test and co-integration relations. In our results, we could contribute as theoretical foundation for regional development of eco- tourism in China. Meanwhile, the research result of convergence of regional eco-agricultural tourism in China could also contribute as the theoretical foundation for the policymaker.
Analysis of Information Systems Applied to Evaluating Tourism Service Quality Based on Organizational Impact

Abstract: Organizational impact on information systems plays an important role for tourism managers’ attention towards improving tourism service quality. As tourism service quality depends on information systems, which is important to determine what aspects of organizational impact that are critical to the managers of tourism enterprises to devise effective tourism service quality improvement strategies. In this paper, the model of the relationship of information systems, tourism service quality and organizational impact is constructed to solve the problems of the correlation among them. The organizational impact is hypothesized in which information systems and tourism service qualities are high. Meanwhile, a positive relationship between information systems, tourism service quality can be drawn. Hereafter, the hypotheses can be tested with the survey data. Finally, the results of this paper show that the tourism service quality is the most influential variable in the model proposed, which highlighted the importance of information systems applied to tourism service quality based on organizational impact.
A Coupled Model Study on the Intensification of the Asian Summer Monsoon in IPCC SRES Scenarios

Abstract: The Asian summer monsoon is an important part of the climate system. Investigating the response of the Asian summer monsoon to changing concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols will be meaningful to understand and predict climate variability and climate change not only in Asia but also globally. In order to diagnose the impacts of future anthropogenic emissions on monsoon climates, a coupled general circulation model of the atmosphere and the ocean has been used at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology. In addition to carbon dioxide, the major well mixed greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, several chlorofluorocarbons, and CFC substitute gases are prescribed as a function of time. The sulfur cycle is simulated interactively, and both the direct aerosol effect and the indirect cloud albedo effect are considered.Furthermore, changes in tropospheric ozone have been pre-calculated with a chemical transport model and prescribed as a function of time and space in the climate simulations. Concentrations of greenhouse gases and anthropogenic emissions of sulfur dioxide are prescribed according to observations (1860-1990) and projected into the future (1990-2100) according to the Scenarios A2 and B2 in Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES, Nakicenovic et al., 2000) developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It is found that the Indian summer monsoon is enhanced in the scenarios in terms of both mean precipitation and interannual variability. An increase in precipitation is simulated for northern China but a decrease for the southern part. Furthermore, the simulated future increase in monsoon variability seems to be linked to enhanced ENSO variability towards the end of the scenario integrations.

Abstract: In this paper, we extend the generalized likelihood ratio test to the varying-coefficient models with censored data. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the proposed test and demonstrate that its limiting null distribution follows a distribution, with the scale constant and the number of degree of freedom being independent of nuisance parameters or functions, which is called the wilks phenomenon. Both simulated and real data examples are given to illustrate the performance of the testing approach.

Abstract: The reliability of facility location problems has been received wide attention for several decades. Researchers formulate varied models to optimize the reliability of location decisions. But the most of such studies are not practical since the models are too ideal. In this paper, based on the classical uncapacitated fixed-charge location problem (UFLP) and some supply constraints from the reality, we distinguish deterministic facility failure and stochastic facility failure cases to formulate models to measure the reliability of a system. The computational results and reliability envelopes for a specific example are also given.
Workflow-Based Platform Design and Implementation for Numerical Weather Prediction Models and Meteorological Data Service  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we present a set of best practices for workflow design and implementation for numerical weather prediction models and meteorological data service, which have been in operation in China Meteorological Administration (CMA) for years and have been proven effective in reliably managing the complexities of large-scale meteorological related workflows. Based on the previous work on the platforms, we argue that a minimum set of guidelines including workflow scheme, module design, implementation standards and maintenance consideration during the whole establishment of the platform are highly recommended, serving to reduce the need for future maintenance and adjustment. A significant gain in performance can be achieved through the workflow-based projects. We believe that a good workflow system plays an important role in the weather forecast service, providing a useful tool for monitoring the whole process, fixing the errors, repairing a workflow, or redesigning an equivalent workflow pattern with new components.
Synthetic Studies on Erythromycin Derivatives: Reactivity of the C12-21 Alkene

Abstract: The reactivity of the C12-21 alkene of some erythromycin A derivatives was studied. This double bond was easily oxidized to the corresponding epoxide with excellent stereoselectivity. A single crystal X-ray structure showed that the epoxide moiety was on the same side as the acetonide. When an erythromycin derivative containing a C12-21 alkene was treated with diazomethane a [3+2] cycloaddition affording a pyrazoline occurred. In the case of 6-O-allylated erythromycin derivatives the C12-21 alkene was selectively epoxidized in the presence of the 6-O-allyl moiety. These results show that the C12-21 alkene is an active reaction site, which can be used for useful further modification of erythromycin derivatives.
