Photocatalytic Degradation of Ibuprofen Using TiO2 and Ecotoxicological Assessment of Degradation Intermediates against Daphnia similis  [PDF]

Abstract:

Several pharmaceutical compounds have been detected in natural aqueous systems and ibuprofen (IBF), one of the most consumed medicament, has been detected in many countries. The degradation efficiency of IBF under TiO2/UV radiation was evaluated. Optimum degradation results were observed using 20 mg·L-1 of TiO2, pH 7.8 and 5 mg·L-1 of IBF. Under these experimental conditions total IBF removal was achieved in less than 60 min of irradiation. Although total IBF concentration was observed, the total mineralization of the compound was not achieved. The by-products generated during TiO2/UV reaction showed to be more toxic against Daphnia similis than the initial IBF present in aqueous solution.

Abstract: dairy wastewater is characterized by frequent episodes of drastic increases of organic content, giving rise to bulking filamentous bacteria and compromising the biological treatment process. this study reports the reduction of organic content of such wastewater by the application of the solar photo-fenton process. for a wastewater containing 335, 2627 or 5400 mg c l-1 between 90% and 50% of the organic carbon content were removed after 3.5 h irradiation. the results show that the solar photo-fenton process can be a good alternative for the abatement of organic content of dairy wastewater, especially in cases of organic content fluctuation, allowing an efficient biological treatment.

Abstract: wastewater and soil treatment processes based on fenton's reagent have gained great attention in recent years due to its high oxidation power. this review describes the fundaments of the fenton and photo-fenton processes and discusses the main aspects related to the degradation of organic contaminants in water such as the complexation of iron, the use of solar light as the source of irradiation and the most important reactor types used. an overview of the main applications of the process to a variety of industrial wastewater and soil remediations is presented.

Abstract: Electrodeposition of CZTS thin films on ZnS was carried using a 2-electrode method to fabricate superstrate structure solar cells. A comprehensive study was performed on the effects of trisodium citrate on the CZTS electrolyte bath. In the present investigation, it is demonstrated that using a CZTS electrolyte with a concentration of 0.2 M trisodium citrate yields CZTS thin films with an electronic bandgap of 1.52 eV, a p-type nature, and good uniformity, which are all results desired for the fabrication of thin film solar cells. Characterization was performed using UV-Vi-IR optical absorption, SEM imaging, Raman spectrometry, and photoelectrochemical cells conducted for electronic bandgap, morphology, chemical composition, and semiconductor conductivity, respectively.

Abstract: Los estilos de vida o subculturas , son procesos sociales que incluyen tradiciones, conductas y comportamientos, creencias y pensamientos de personas o grupos de población que comparten un mismo hábitat y que está influenciado por el contexto de la comunidad. En las perso- nas que padecen la enfermedad de Chagas, en su forma crónica, estos procesos son consecuencia del riesgo de exposición a factores que determinan dicha enfermedad, ya que por muchos a os el hombre ha invadido espacios naturales propios del vector y ha utilizado materiales para la construcción de sus viviendas que se traducen en un nido ideal para estos insectos y además ha mantenido criaderos de animales cercanos a la vivienda. Las condiciones precarias de salubridad y la carencia de información adecuada, son parte de algunos de estos factores que hacen al hombre susceptible a esta enfermedad. El propósito de este estudio estuvo orientado a identificar los estilos de vida de individuos con diagnóstico de enfermedad de Chagas, en su fase crónica, procedentes de zonas rurales, semi-urbanas y urbanas. Se realizó con un dise o cualitativo en la modalidad etnográfica, mediante entrevistas a profundidad y con la participación de siete informantes claves, quienes a través de su testimonio nos permitió identificar categorías relacionadas con su vivienda durante su etapa de ni ez y juventud; con las creencias sobre la enfermedad; el estilos de vida adoptado y su interacción con el personal de salud. Se observo la necesidad de desarrollar actividades educativas y estrategias de información, en términos de incorporar a los sujetos en el análisis y com- prensión de la enfermedad que les afecta, la modificación de conducta que favorecen el mantenimiento de su salud

Abstract: In the present work, the hybrid catalyst films of TiO2/CuO containing up to 10% in mol of copper were deposited onto glass surface. Precursor solutions were obtained by citrate precursor method. Films were porous and the average particle size was 20 nm determined by FEG-SEM analysis. The photocatalytic activities of these films were studied using Rhodamine B as a target compound in a fixed bed reactor developed in our laboratory and UV lamp. It was observed that the addition of copper to TiO2 increased significantly its photocatalytic activity during the oxidation of Rhodamine B. The degradation exceeded 90% within 48 hours of irradiation compared to 38% when pure TiO2 was used. Moreover, there was a reduction in the particles band gap energy when compared to that of pure TiO2. These results indicate that the TiO2/CuO films are promising catalysts for the development of fixed bed reactors to be used to treat effluents containing azo dyes.

Abstract: The present work evaluated the use of photo-Fenton process for the treatment of kraft pulp mill effluent. The photo-Fenton best operating conditions, such as pH, concentration, and H2O2: Fe2+ ratio were evaluated. The efficiency of the treatment was measured by COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal. The results showed that the optimum pH for the photo-Fenton process was equal to 3. The increase in H2O2 application resulted in an efficiency increase of the photo-Fenton process, although this was not a directly proportional relation. For most cases, the H2O2: Fe2+ proportion of 100:1 yielded the best results for COD removal. Solar radiation was more efficient than artificial UV to the COD removal. During the treatment the organic matter of the effluent was more oxidized than mineralized, showing a higher removal of COD than BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and TOC (total organic carbon), respectively. So, photo-Fenton process increased the BOD/ COD ration but decreased the BOD/TOC ratio.

Abstract: Se presentan los antecedentes históricos del sarampión, los aspectos fundamentales del virus, se relacionan algunas características como: el agente causal y sus diversas complicaciones, las técnicas empleadas para el diagnóstico y el desarrollo de las vacunas antisarampionosas desde que surgieron hasta la actualidad. Además, se hace referencia a los aspectos epidemiológicos y la situación de dicha enfermedad en Cuba. Abstract: the ectoparasitic fauna associated to marine mammals is scarcely known in chile. this report deals with a sample of anoplura parasites collected from adult and juvenile otaria flavescens, the southern sea lion, at the los lagos region, chile. the anoplura were taxonomically determined using the existent keys and they were subsequently described. this is the first record of antarctophthirus microchir in chile which, together with what is already known about the geographical distribution and the world evolutionary history of the otariidae, could represent another evidence of the monophyly of the northern and southern hemisphere otariidae groups.
