Silveira, Cristian Berto da;Escobar, Jairo A.;Quintero, Miguel W.;Sousa, Eliandra de;Moraes, Elisangela Guzzi de;Oliveira, Ant?nio Pedro Novaes de;Rambo, Carlos Renato;Hotza, Dachamir;
Química Nova , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422007000500010
Abstract: characterization of the thermal decomposition of polyurethane (pur) foams was performed by fourier-transformed infrared (ft-ir) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (tga). three main weight loss paths were observed by tga, the residue being lower than 3 wt.% for 3 different pur foams analyzed. ft-ir spectra indicated co2, co, nh3 and isocyanides as main decomposition products. pur foams of different cell sizes were immersed in a slurry of the parent glass ceramic of composition li2o-zro2-sio2-al 2o3 (lzsa) and submitted to heat treatment. the lzsa cellular glass ceramics obtained after sintering and crystallization resembled the original morphology of the pur foams.
Cultura acústica e letramento em Mo?ambique: em busca de fundamentos para uma educa??o intercultural
Lopes, José de Sousa Miguel;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97021999000100006
Abstract: the author starts from a characterization of an acoustic culture, such as the mozambican, to then analyze the importance of mother tongues as one of the most significant cultural attributes of a people. to put the theme to be developed in its context, the author presents in broad lines some social, political and historical information about mozambique. next, he discusses in what measure the political power after mozambique?s independence took into account the strong unwritten features that are present in that culture and in what way such policies have or have not influenced the literacy process. the adoption of the portuguese as the teaching language, and the refusal by the political authorities to research, systematize and introduce the mozambican languages on the initial grades have contributed to raise illiteracy rates, and to perhaps irreversible losses of oral traditions. at the same time, it constitutes a devaluation of the various ethnic cultures present in mozambique. the author argues that a solution will be found in the adoption of bilingualism. that implies transforming the oral languages in written languages, and the preservation of a foreign language as the second language. that second language, being the official language, would have an important role in various social areas such as in official communications of the state, in international affairs etc.
Melo,Miguel; Sousa,Jaime Correia de;
Revista Portuguesa de Clínica Geral , 2011,
Abstract: performance indicators have been in use in portugal for some time now for performance assessment and contractualisation in family health units (usfs). it is important to consider both the quality of the performance indicator and its impact on the delivery of health care in general practice in order to improve performance assessment. when performance indicators assess only a limited area of clinical practice or set very high targets, they may limit the focus of clinical activities with possible negative consequences for patients. one of these consequences may be the replacement of patient-centred medicine with indicator-based medicine. in addition, there is poor scientific evidence for the use of some of the indicators and controversial usefulness of others. the difficulty of measuring some health outcomes can produce medicalisation, consumerism, and iatrogenic disease. in this paper, the authors present some suggestions for improving existing performance indicators. further developments of related matters, such as the medical information system and contract schemes, are also proposed. payment for performance should be based on indicators that produce better health outcomes for patients while respecting the principles of family medicine.
Iterators, Recursors and Interaction Nets
Ian Mackie,Jorge Sousa Pinto,Miguel Vilaca
Computer Science , 2009,
Abstract: We propose a method for encoding iterators (and recursion operators in general) using interaction nets (INs). There are two main applications for this: the method can be used to obtain a visual nota- tion for functional programs; and it can be used to extend the existing translations of the lambda-calculus into INs to languages with recursive types.
Age-Friendly Cities Performance Assessment Indicators System Validation  [PDF]
Francisco Alves Pinheiro, Miguel Tato Diogo, Joaquim Eduardo Sousa Góis, Constan?a Paúl
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2015.65060
Abstract: This study aimed to validate a set of indicators that can contribute to producing a diagnostic about the living conditions of the elderly population in the cities, serving as a powerful tool for decision making. The methodology adopted was the adaptation of the “Diagnostic content validation model”, Fehring, published in 1987. The system of indicators was based on the concept of active ageing and its determinants. Of the 38 indicators analyzed by the experts as to their appropriateness and relevance for the diagnosis and monitoring of the performance of cities to be friends of the elderly, 17 were considered critical, 19 supplementary and 2 were considered inadequate and irrelevant, being excluded from the system. Then the reliability of the questionnaire through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated. The indicators proved to be useful in classifying age-friendly cities worldwide.
Automatic Provisioning of QoS Aware OSPF Configurations
Pedro Sousa,Miguel Rocha,Miguel Rio,Paulo Cortez
Journal of Networks , 2007, DOI: 10.4304/jnw.2.2.1-10
Abstract: This paper presents a contribution for the development of network management tools able to automatically provide QoS aware routing configurations. In this perspective, a traffic engineering framework able to provide near-optimal OSPF configurations is presented. The devised solution takes into account the multiconstrained QoS demands of a given network domain in order to improve the quality of the OSPF weight setting process. To pursue this objective, this work resorts to Evolutionary Algorithms, which provide OSPF configurations based on a bi-objective function. The proof of concept of the proposed optimization framework resorts to a wide range of simulation studies, clearly showing the effectiveness of the devised mechanisms.
Cooperation and best practices within the COTEC Innovative SME Network
Bento,Paulo; Sousa,Helena Pinto de; Almeida,Miguel;
Economia Global e Gest?o , 2011,
Abstract: this article investigates what members consider to be the advantages of cooperating with and belonging to the cotec innovative sme network, and identifies which have been and should be the best cooperation practices. these advantages were measured through enquiries conducted at the beginning of 2008 and 2010, while the best practices were assessed by means of both the 2010 enquiry and the innovation scoring (is). the results were not always conclusive or robust; nevertheless, we found that the three main advantages cited in 2008 were repeated in 2010 and that there are a number of statistically significant relationships between some selected advantages and categories such as ict sector, manufacturing industry or collaborative profile “technological partner”. although the crossing of best practices (past and future) with the is was inconclusive, the results could serve as a reference for cotec and its members.
La innovación de los procesos: Diferenciación en los servicios turísticos
Barbosa de Sousa,Bruno Miguel; Dominique-Ferreira,Sérgio;
Estudios y perspectivas en turismo , 2012,
Abstract: the innovation contributes to business success and increased competitive advantage, one of the concepts that have deserved more attention among researchers in the field of management. innovation is not exclusive of tangible products or services and can naturally extend to the process itself, the organization or marketing. although it is not easy to gather a universal concept for innovation, do not seem to be no doubt that its importance is such that allows the company to build on the foundations of this future development, regardless of past success. this work (work in progress) has as its central purpose the study of process innovation in the supply outlook for tourism, given its importance in achieving business success. the recognition of its value assumes it as a challenge, making it necessary to distinguish with product, marketing and organizational innovation, either in substance or in the organizational competencies. will be presented in this work, a brief description (as well as evolution of the concept) as a way of contextualizing and, then, clarified the distinction between the concepts process innovation and innovation process. search will bring together the key distinguishing features from the perspective of tourism as a means of achieving competitive advantage for business. we will also discuss implications for management and future studies.
Pertussis ainda mata
Freitas,Joana; Sousa,Susana Gama de; Miguel,Cristina; Fonseca,Paula;
Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia , 2010,
Abstract: pertussis, or whooping cough, is a highly infectious respiratory disease, endemic all over the world, caused by bacteria bordetella pertussis. the authors describe the case of a 36 day old infant, brought to the emergency room due to respiratory distress and cyanosing cough, admitted with suspected pertussis infection complicated by bacterial pneumonia, having begun large spectrum antibiotics. labs showed hyperleukocytosis and thrombocytosis. she was transferred to an intensive care unit because of a worsened state, dying 20 hours after admission with pulmonary hypertension and haemorrhage. pertussis was diagnosed by pcr. over the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of cases of pertussis. adolescents and adults have become an under-recognized but significant source of infection, particularly to small unvaccinated infants. the authors underline the importance of recognizing pertussis, so that even in its atypical presentation, one can suspect, treat, report and prevent a disease that is not, and is not expected to be, eradicated any time soon. new vaccination strategies are necessary, to avoid this disease, which can be fatal to the most vulnerable.
