Abstract:

In Spain, certain population-based studies have shown high blood mercury (Hg) levels due to the high consumption of fish. Some studies have stated that one of the most consumed fish in Spain is canned tuna. Different Spanish organisms consider that it is safe to consume canned tuna as it supposedly has a low mercury content, particularly in so-called light tuna. However, in Spain light tuna is mainly yellowfin and bigeye tuna, while in other countries it is mainly skipjack tuna. This study analyzed 36 cans of the most popular brands in Spain and examined the influence of the type of tuna, packaging medium (olive oil, sunflower seed oil, water or marinade), different brands, prices and expiration dates. Mercury concentrations (mg/kg) were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and thermal decomposition amalgamation. The medians observed were (mg/kg): light tuna: 0.314; IQR: 0.205 - 0.594, white tuna: 0.338; IQR: 0.276 - 0.558, skipjack: 0.311; IQR: 0.299 - 0.322, frigate tuna: 0.219; IQR 0.182 - 0.257 and mackerel: 0.042; IQR 0.029 - 0.074. We found statistically significant differences between white tuna, light tuna and mackerel (p = 0.004); light tuna and mackerel (p = 0.002) and white tuna and mackerel (p = 0.006). However, we found no differences between white tuna and light tuna, or among packaging medium, brands, prices or expiration dates. The limit of 0.500 mg/kg of mercury in canned tuna was exceeded by the following percentages of the cans: 33.3% of light tuna, 16.7% of white tuna, and 0% of Skipjack, frigate tuna and mackerel. The mercury content of the cans of Spanish light tuna that were analyzed was variable and high. The results of this study indicate that stricter regulation of Hg in canned tuna is necessary. Until then, it is safer to recommend that vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women consume canned mackerel, which has a markedly lower mercury content.

A search for radio pulsars and fast transients in M31 using the WSRT

Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1093/mnras/sts205
Abstract: We present the results of the most sensitive and comprehensive survey yet undertaken for radio pulsars and fast transients in the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and its satellites, using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at a central frequency of 328 MHz. We used the WSRT in a special configuration called 8gr8 (eight-grate) mode, which provides a large instantaneous field-of-view, about 5 square degrees per pointing, with good sensitivity, long dwell times (up to 8 hours per pointing), and good spatial resolution (a few arc minutes) for locating sources. We have searched for both periodicities and single pulses in our data, aiming to detect bright, persistent radio pulsars and rotating radio transients (RRATs) of either Galactic or extragalactic origin. Our searches did not reveal any confirmed periodic signals or bright single bursts from (potentially) cosmological distances. However, we do report the detection of several single pulse events, some repeating at the same dispersion measure, which could potentially originate from neutron stars in M31. One in particular was seen multiple times, including a burst of six pulses in 2000 seconds, at a dispersion measure of 54.7 pc cm^-3, which potentially places the origin of this source outside of our Galaxy. Our results are compared to a range of hypothetical populations of pulsars and RRATs in M31 and allow us to constrain the luminosity function of pulsars in M31. They also show that, unless the pulsar population in M31 is much dimmer than in our Galaxy, there is no need to invoke any violation of the inverse square law of the distance for pulsar fluxes.
Discovery and timing of the first 8gr8 Cygnus survey pulsars

Abstract: Since 2004 we have been carrying out a pulsar survey of the Cygnus region with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at a frequency of 328 MHz. The survey pioneered a novel interferometric observing mode, termed 8gr8 (eight-grate), whereby multiple simultaneous digital beams provide high sensitivity over a large field of view. Since the Cygnus region is known to contain OB associations, it is likely that pulsars are formed here. Simulations have shown that this survey could detect 70 pulsars, which would increase our understanding of the radio pulsar population in this region. We also aim to expand the known population of intermittent and rotating radio transient (RRAT)-like pulsars. In this paper we describe our methods of observation, processing and data analysis, and we present the first results. Our observing method exploits the way a regularly spaced, linear array of telescopes yields a corresponding regularly spaced series of so-called ``grating'' beams on the sky. By simultaneously forming a modest number (eight) of offset digital beams, we can utilize the entire field of view of each WSRT dish, but retain the coherently summed sensitivity of the entire array. For the processing we performed a large number of trial combinations of period and dispersion measure (DM) using a computer cluster. In the first processing cycle of the WSRT 8gr8 Cygnus Survey, we have discovered three radio pulsars, with spin periods of 1.657, 1.099 and 0.445 seconds. These pulsars have been observed on a regular basis since their discovery, both in a special follow-up programme as well as in the regular timing programme. The timing solutions are presented in this paper. We also discuss this survey method in the context of the SKA and its pathfinders.
The public intellectual in critical marxism: from the organic intellectual to the general intellect
Herrera Zgaib,Miguel ángel;
Papel Politico , 2009,
Abstract: the key issue of this essay is to look at antonio gramsci's writings as centered on the theme of public intellectual within the communist experience in the years 1920s and 1930s. the essay also deals with the present significance of what gramsci said about the organic intellectual regarding the existence of the general intellect in the current capitalist relations of production and reproduction of society. it is important to bear in mind that marx is the first one to write about the general intellect in the grundrisse. later on, the extra parliamentary movement autonomia theorized on the mass intellectuality in italy during the 1960s and 1970s. today antonio negri, paolo virno and maurizio lazzarato are the main authors who are working the theory of the general intellect and immaterial labor in the dynamics of the society of information and global capitalism.
Subalternidad y excepcionalidad en el posfordismo hegemónico. El caso colombiano: 1999-2009
Miguel ángel Herrera Zgaib
Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2011,

Abstract: background: the drece iii study is based on the follow up of a cohort representative of the spanish general population. the mortality, its main causes and relevant risk factors have been analyzed. methods: the drece cohort is composed of 4783 subjects followed since 1991 to 2004 (70930 person-years). in 1991 a general medical exam including blood analysis and nutritional questionnaire was undertaken. currently the age spam is from 18 to 73 years. vital status and mortality causes were provided by the national institute of statistics. results: in this period, 125 deaths were registered: 53 persons (42.4%) due to cancer; 31 persons (24.8%) due to circulatory causes, of which 24 were due to cardiovascular origin. the remaining 41 (32.8%) deaths were included under the icd 10 "other chapters". for the all causes mortality the independent associated variables were: creatinina 1.5 mgr/dl, hr 3.78 (95% ci: 1.52-9.40); diabetes, hr 2.80 (95% ci: 1.74-4.46); male sex, hr 2.39 (i95% ci: 1.61-3.55); age, hr 1.08 (i95% ci: 1.07-1.10); and gammaglutamil transpeptidasa, hr 1.001 (i95% ci: 1.000-1.003). in the case of cancer mortality the risk factors founded were: age, hr 1.12 (i95% ci: 1.09-1.16); and tobacco, hr 1.33 (i95% ci: 1.14-1.54). for cardiovascular mortality were creatinina 1.5 mg/dl, hr 19.40 (i95% ci: 5.45-69.12); diabetes, hr 9.82 (i95% ci: 4.19-23.04); and age, hr 1.10 (i95% ci: 1.05-1.15). conclusions: we obtain a mortality pattern where cancer is the most frequent cause. classic risk factors appear associated to main death causes. diabetes mellitus has an outstanding role as risk factor associated to early mortality. no specific diet data was associated neither to all causes mortality, nor to cardiovascular or cancer.
