Effects of different priming treatments and priming durations on germination percentage of parsley (Petroselinum crispum L.) seeds  [PDF]

Abstract: The effects of different priming treatments and priming durations on germination percentage at different temperatures in parsley seeds were studied. The seeds were treated for 2, 4, 6 and 8 days with the PEG 6000 (–0.5 MPa, –1.0 MPa and –1.5 MPa), KNO3 (0.30 mol/L and 0.35 mol/L), Mannitol (0.50 mol/L and 0.60 mol/L) and hydropriming (12h, 24h, 36h and 48h) and unprimed (control). Germination studies were made at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25°C. Percentage of germination at different temperatures was significantly affected by priming treatments. Hydropriming (12h, 24h and 36 h) and mannitol 0.60 mol/L at 2 day generally had the highest germination percentages. In general, the highest germination percentage with priming was determined at 10°C. It may be said that seed priming treatments increased seed germination percentage at both low and high temperatures. The highest germination percentages were observed in both hydropriming and mannitol treatments as compared with PEG and KNO3 treatments. The PEG and KNO3 (2 and 4 days) treatments were better than unprimed treatment in all of the temperatures.

Surgical implantation of a mechanical or biological prosthetic heart valve (PHV) with original structure and hemodynamics is conventional treatment of valvular heart disease. All kinds of prosthetic valves are stenotic comparing with native valves. They should be imagined by being aware of their specific properties. PHV diseases (PHVD) describes situations like obstruction, thromboembolism and regurgitation which also have characteristic images. Determining the cause and severity of PHVD is mandatory for selection of treatment method. Knowledge about PHVD and correct usage of cardiac imaging methods facilitate diagnosis. Most helpful diagnostic test for PHVD is transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The aim of this review is to describe TEE in PHVD, TEE imaging characteristics of some special PHVD and clinical guidance of TEE in PHV problems.

Abstract: Cardiac trauma caused by Swann-Ganz catheter may very rarely cause cardiac perforation, tamponade and right ventricular pseudoaneurysm. In contrast to left ventricular equivalants, pseudoaneurysms of the RV have a weak tendency to rupture. Its impact on patient outcomes should be assesed very carefully depending on its size, filling rate/capacity. It is possible not to operate the patient and follow progression of RV pseudoaneurysm by clinical and echocardiographic findings. This case is a good sample for it and describes the lifespan of a small RV pseudoaneurysm. It is not only the unique right ventricle pseudoaneurysm due to cardiac trauma caused by Swann Ganz catheter, but medically treated case without surgery and recovered completely.

The present study aims to investigate the elementary, secondary and high school students’ perceptions on a good language teacher. The participants are 365 Turkish school students who are learning English as a foreign language. The present study has revealed that most of the student groups generally differ in terms of issues related to teaching skills when compared with the issues related to the affective skills. In the present study it has been also found that what students expect from a good English teacher is to have the ability to maintain discipline, motivate students, learn about the learner’ needs and establish good relations with them. The study also reveals striking results with respect to classroom discipline and teacher subject knowledge.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia is an inherited fatal cardiomyopathy causing fat and connective tissue infiltration of right ventricle. In advanced disease, it may also involve left ventricle. Heart failure, arrhythmias and sudden death are main clinical components. Many different genetic mutations can cause this cardiomyopathy. All mutations lead to the formation of the disease are not yet defined. Basis of pathogenetic event is corruption of physical connection as well as the electrical conduction between cardiomyocytes due to these genetic reasons. Genetical inheritance is frequently autosomal dominant but incomplete. Because of the many different phenotypes, there may be great heterogenity of clinical manifestations in same family. Diagnostic criteria are renovated lately. Current cardiac imaging techniques for the diagnosis is gradually progressing. A combination of several tests should be used for diagnosis. Early and accurate diagnosis will save lives and improve the patient’s quality of life. In this paper, after mentioning the features and diagnosis of ARVD, differential diagnosis of ARVD from other diseases which may cause fatty infiltration of heart, arrhythmias and sudden death will be focused.

Abstract: Fireships that were designed to burn down the enemy ships had been used in naval warfare since ancient times. As the global naval rivalry intensified in the early modern period the importance of fireships increased in naval warfare strategies. This article tracks down the incidents where fireships were used against the Ottoman navy in the 19th century and concludes that after series of naval defeats the Ottomans found fireships useless and gradually abandoned them.
A Constitutive Formulation for the Linear Thermoelastic Behavior of Arbitrary Fiber-Reinforced Composites

Abstract: The linear thermoelastic behavior of a composite material reinforced by two independent and inextensible fiber families has been analyzed theoretically. The composite material is assumed to be anisotropic, compressible, dependent on temperature gradient, and showing linear elastic behavior. Basic principles and axioms of modern continuum mechanics and equations belonging to kinematics and deformation geometries of fibers have provided guidance and have been determining in the process of this study. The matrix material is supposed to be made of elastic material involving an artificial anisotropy due to fibers reinforcing by arbitrary distributions. As a result of thermodynamic constraints, it has been determined that the free energy function is dependent on a symmetric tensor and two vectors whereas the heat flux vector function is dependent on a symmetric tensor and three vectors. The free energy and heat flux vector functions have been represented by a power series expansion, and the type and the number of terms taken into consideration in this series expansion have determined the linearity of the medium. The linear constitutive equations of the stress and heat flux vector are substituted in the Cauchy equation of motion and in the equation of conservation of energy to obtain the field equations. 1.
