Low-Molecular-Weight Heparin and Protamine-Based Polyelectrolyte Nano Complexes for Protein Delivery (A Review Articles)  [PDF]

Abstract: We produced low-molecular-weight heparin/protamine micro (nano) particles (LMW-H/P MPs·NPs) as a carrier for heparin-binding growth factors (GFs), such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 and various GFs in platelet-rich plasma (PRP). A mixture of LMW-H (MW: approximately 5000 Da, 6.4 mg/ml) and protamine (MW: approximately 3000 Da, 10 mg/ml) at a ratio of 7:3 (vol:vol) yields a dispersion of micro (nano) particles (200 nm - 3 µm in diameter). The diluted LMW-H solution in saline (0.32 mg/ml) mixed with diluted protamine (0.5 mg/ml) at a ratio at 7:3 (vol:vol) resulted in soluble nanoparticles (approximately 100 nm in diameter). The generated NPs could be then stabilized by adding 2 mg/ml dextran (MW: 178-217 kDa) and remained soluble after lyophilization of dialyzed LMW-H /P NPs solution. The LMW-H/P MPs·NPs adsorb GFs, control their release, protect GFs and activate their biological activities. Furthermore, administration of GFs-containing F/P MPs·NPs exhibited significantly higher inductions of vascularization and fibrous tissue formation in vivo than GFs alone. LMW-H/P MPs·NPs can also efficiently bind to tissue culture plates and retain the binding of GFs. The LMW-H/P MPs·NP-coated matrix with various GFs or cytokines provided novel biomaterials that could control cellular activity such as proliferation and differentiation. Thus, LMW-H/P MPs·NPs are an excellent carrier for GFs and are a functional coating matrix for various kinds of cell cultures.
2-Octyl-Cyanoacrylate Skin Adhesive Used as a Splinting Material in Auricular Surgery  [PDF]

Abstract: In cases of auricular surgery, postoperative dressings are thought to be important for keeping auricular contour and in helping to prevent from dressing failures due to edema or subcutaneous hematoma, which may result in fibrous or cartilaginous proliferation. However, it is often difficult to achieve success with standard dressings because of the complicated shape of the auricle. We used 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate skin adhesive to dress the auricle after different types of auricular procedures (five cases of cryptotia, two of prominent ear, two of severe auricular laceration, two of skin grafting and one of flap repair of the partial auricle defect). The 2-octyl-cyanoacrlaate skin adhesive was applied to the suture line and the operated and peripheral areas for wider coverage. No dressing materials were placed over the surface. In all cases, the desired outcome was achieved, without subcutaneous hematoma, wound dehiscence, and wound infection. Contact dermatitis caused by the skin adhesive was not observed in any of the cases. Dressing and splinting after auricular surgery can be simply and successfully achieved using 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate skin adhesive. There is no need for more complicated dressings and post-surgical dressing changes, resulting in higher patient satisfaction.

Abstract: Low-molecular-weight heparin/protamine microparticles (LMW-H/P MPs) were produced as a carrier for heparin-binding growth factors (GFs) and for various adhesive cells. A mixture of low-molecular-weight heparin (MW: approximately 5000 Da, 6.4 mg/mL) and protamine (MW: approximately 3000 Da, 10 mg/mL) at a ratio of 7:3 (vol:vol) yields a dispersion of microparticles (0.5–3 μm in diameter). LMW-H/P MPs immobilize, control the release and protect the activity of GFs. LMW-H/P MPs can also bind to cell surfaces, causing these cells to interact with the LMW-H/P MPs, inducing cells/MPs-aggregate formation and substantially promoting cellular viability. Furthermore, LMW-H/P MPs can efficiently bind to tissue culture plates and retain the binding of important GFs, such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2. The LMW-H/P MPs-coated matrix with various GFs or cytokines may provide novel biomaterials that can control cellular activity such as growth and differentiation. Thus, LMW-H/P MPs are an excellent carrier for GFs and various cells and are an efficient coating matrix for cell cultures.
Relevance of Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Cues in Pet Dogs’ Awareness of Humans  [PDF]

Abstract: Many studies have looked at how dogs respond to human communicative information. Here, we examined which human communicative factors were important in influencing dogs’ responses. Eleven healthy pet dogs with no apparent aggressive behaviour toward people were recruited. Five sensory conditions (all cues presented; either a visual, an auditory, or an olfactory cue presented; no cues presented) were provided three times randomly to each dog during the tests. All tests were video recorded, and both the dogs’ behaviour and time taken to reach the person when she presented each of the sensory cue conditions were observed. Total rates of reaching the person were as follows: 97.0% (all cues), 87.9% (auditory cues), 84.4% (visual cues), 84.4% (olfactory cues), and 69.7% (no cues). The time taken for the dog to notice the person in the box and then obtain a reward from her differed among the five conditions: all cues (6.00 ± 0.32 s) and visual cues (6.02 ± 0.91 s) were significantly faster than auditory cues (18.56 ± 9.57 s) and no cues (26.55 ± 11.72 s). Thus the type of information input was important in recognition of the person by the dogs and influenced the dogs’ response times; visual cues appeared advantageous in confirming the person’s presence.

Abstract: The noisy-or and its generalization noisy-max have been utilized to reduce the complexity of knowledge acquisition. In this paper, we present a new representation of noisy-max that allows for efficient inference in general Bayesian networks. Empirical studies show that our method is capable of computing queries in well-known large medical networks, QMR-DT and CPCS, for which no previous exact inference method has been shown to perform well.

Abstract: In this paper, the author proved that the base change lifting associated to a totally ramified extension of a non-archimedean local field coincides with a map coming from the close fields theory of Kazhdan under some conditions. As a corollary, we can construct a base change lifting for an APF extension of a mixed characteristic local field.

The symplectic geometry of the Gel'fand-Cetlin-Molev basis for representations of Sp(2n,C)

Abstract: Gel'fand and Cetlin constructed in the 1950s a canonical basis for a finite-dimensional representation V(\lambda) of U(n,\C) by successive decompositions of the representation by a chain of subgroups. Guillemin and Sternberg constructed in the 1980s the Gel'fand-Cetlin integrable system on the coadjoint orbits of U(n,\C), which is the symplectic geometric version, via geometric quantization, of the Gel'fand-Cetlin construction. (Much the same construction works for representations of SO(n,\R).) A. Molev in 1999 found a Gel'fand-Cetlin-type basis for representations of the symplectic group, using essentially new ideas. An important new role is played by the Yangian Y(2), an infinite-dimensional Hopf algebra, and a subalgebra of Y(2) called the twisted Yangian Y^{-}(2). In this paper we use deformation theory to give the analogous symplectic-geometric results for the case of U(n,\H), i.e. we construct a completely integrable system on the coadjoint orbits of U(n,\H). We call this the Gel'fand-Cetlin-Molev integrable system.

Abstract: We present an efficient and robust reference resolution algorithm in an end-to-end state-of-the-art information extraction system, which must work with a considerably impoverished syntactic analysis of the input sentences. Considering this disadvantage, the basic setup to collect, filter, then order by salience does remarkably well with third-person pronouns, but needs more semantic and discourse information to improve the treatments of other expression types.
