Competitiveness of Winter Rice Varieties against Weed under Dry Direct Seeded Conditions  [PDF]

Abstract:
Aerobic rice or dry direct seeded rice is highly vulnerable to weeds because of lack of “head start” over weeds and standing water layer to suppress weeds. The risks of chemical control and the huge cost involvement in mechanical control demand an eco-friendly and cost-effective integrated weed management. Weed competitive rice cultivar may be considered as a viable tool for integrated weed management. In these circumstances, an experiment was designed to evaluate weed competitiveness of some selected winter rice varieties under aerobic soil conditions. The study was conducted during dry season (February to June) 2016 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory and Weed Management Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Fourteen rice varieties namely, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan50, BRRI dhan55, BRRI dhan58, BRRI dhan59, BRRI dhan67, Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, Binadhan-8, Binadhan-10, BRRI hybrid dhan3 and Agrodhan-14 were grown under weedy and weed-free conditions. Plots with no rice were also maintained to observe the natural growth of weed in absence of rice. The experiment was conducted with split-plot design with three replications. Weeding regime was allocated in main plot and rice variety was allocated in sub-plot. Results showed that rice varieties varied widely in their yield performances and weed competitiveness. Among rice varieties, BRRI dhan59 allowed the minimum weed growth (19.2 g m-2) while Binadhan-5 allowed the maximum weed growth (62.8 g m-2). Grain yield ranged from 1.85 t ha-1 (BRRI dhan55) to 3.92 t ha-1 (Binadhan-5) under weed-free condition and between 0.41 t ha-1 (BRRI dhan55) and 2.06 t ha-1 (BRRI dhan59) under weedy condition. Weed inflicted relative yield loss ranged from 43.4% to 82.1% among the varieties. BRRI dhan59 allowed the least yield penalty (43.4%) while Binadhan-5 had the maximum yield penalty (82.1%) due to weed competition. Although Binadhan-5 is the most productive variety (3.92 t ha-1) for aerobic culture but its weed inflicted relative yield loss is higher (82.1%) than many other varieties with low yield potential. On the other hand, BRRI dhan59 appeared as the most weed competitive variety (only 43.4% relative yield loss) with productivity of 3.84 t ha-1. Therefore, weed competitive variety should be considered as a vital tool while designing integrated weed management system for aerobic rice.
Empirical Equation Based Chirality (n, m) Assignment of Semiconducting Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes from Resonant Raman Scattering Data

Abstract: This work presents a technique for the chirality ( n, m) assignment of semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes by solving a set of empirical equations of the tight binding model parameters. The empirical equations of the nearest neighbor hopping parameters, relating the term ( 2n, m) with the first and second optical transition energies of the semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes, are also proposed. They provide almost the same level of accuracy for lower and higher diameter nanotubes. An algorithm is presented to determine the chiral index ( n, m) of any unknown semiconducting tube by solving these empirical equations using values of radial breathing mode frequency and the first or second optical transition energy from resonant Raman spectroscopy. In this paper, the chirality of 55 semiconducting nanotubes is assigned using the first and second optical transition energies. Unlike the existing methods of chirality assignment, this technique does not require graphical comparison or pattern recognition between existing experimental and theoretical Kataura plot.

Abstract: This study presented a Distance Learning System that can improve the performance of the distance learners and also diminish the distance between distance learners virtually. We have proposed a framework for designing an Web based distance learning system with Adaptive Testing Module which can give more benefit over traditional systems and is far applicable for broadcasting knowledge. Present system provides a virtual environment, where students can get much feedback than traditional distance learning processes. Here in this study we have emphasized in collaborative teaching, mutual learning, virtual sessionl classes and adaptive evaulation system for Distance Learning. We have also considered the implementation issues and its limitations.

Abstract: Seven segments display for 0-9 numerals are used in all sorts of electronic equipments. In this study an 31 segments display system has been proposed for bangle characters, both Digits and alphabets. First a grid structure consisting of 31 segments has been discovered so that all the bangle digits can be characterized by this segments. As there can be at most 10 digits(0-9) to be displayed,4 bit inputs are used to represent each digit. Then after analyzing which are segments to be activated to be activated for which digit, appropriate logic circuit have been derived in order to display each bangla digit

Abstract: The increasing volume of unsolicited mass e-mail (otherwise called spam) has generated a need for reliable against spam filters. Utilizing a classifier based on machine learning techniques to naturally filter out spam e-mail has drawn many researchers' attention. In this paper, we review some of relevant ideas and do a set of systematic experiments on e-mail categorization, which has been conducted with four machine learning calculations applied to different parts of e-mail. Experimental results reveal that the header of e-mail provides very useful data for all the machine learning calculations considered to detect spam e-mail.

Abstract: Maximum Flow Problem (MFP) discusses the maximum amount of flow that can be sent from the source to sink. Edmonds-Karp algorithm is the modified version of Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to solve the MFP. This paper presents some modifications of Edmonds-Karp algorithm for solving MFP. Solution of MFP has also been illustrated by using the proposed algorithm to justify the usefulness of proposed method.

Abstract: WiMAX is the most promising high speed wireless technology to provide necessary support with flexible quality of service (QoS). We have investigated the effect of various parameters such as signal frequency, base station antenna height, distance between base station antenna and subscriber station on path loss for WiMAX frequency range for an urban/sub-urban area and developed a mathematical approach based on computer simulation to compensate the increased path loss. Our analysis will be useful to develop a link budget on the basis of path loss characterization for video transmission to allow adequate reception of the signal. New parameters such as M-factor, K-factor; which can be used as differential path loss detector are identified through the present work.

Abstract: Over the past years a booming interest is comprehended in the field of wireless communication for the development of a monitoring system to observe human vital organs activities remotely. Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is such network that provides a continuous monitoring over or inside human body for a long period and can support transmission of real time traffic such as data, voice, video to observe the status of vital organs functionalities. In this paper an overview of WBAN technology and its requirements has been narrated. The aim of this paper was to offer a suitable and appropriate wireless technology for deploying WBAN. Several suitable short range wireless communication technologies that can be adopted in WBAN have also been discussed. Finally numerous applications in the field of medical and non-medical sectors using WBAN technology have been outlined.
