Abstract: health professionals are exposed to various occupational risks, with the greatest impact from biological hazards due to direct contact with potentially contaminated organic materials. besides adopting universal biosafety measures, adequate immunization coverage must be achieved in this context, with educational initiatives playing a crucial role in the process. this was a cross-sectional observational study of undergraduates (n = 136) at the medical school of the federal university in juiz de fora to assess their immunization status and biological risk perceptions. eighty-nine students (65.4%) reported a complete vaccination schedule. ninety-seven (71.3%) had received full immunization against hepatitis b and 99 (72.8%) against tetanus. eighty-six (63.2%) reported having received immunization advice during the course. seventy-three (53.7%) had already been exposed to potentially contaminated material during their academic activities, and 97 (71.3%) used personal protective equipment (ppe) in these contexts. we identified missed immunization doses against hepatitis b and tetanus, a situation that exposes medical students to unnecessary risks. immunization advice was insufficient. the significant rate of exposure to biological hazards and the unsatisfactory use of ppe call for greater attention to accident prevention.
Biologia molecular do cancer colorretal: uma revolu??o silenciosa em andamento
Pinho, Mauro de Souza Leite;
Revista Brasileira de Coloproctologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-98802008000300017
Abstract: despite remaining as the main hope for emerging new concepts and strategies for treatment of colorectal cancer, the lack of results with clinical impact over the last years may contribute to frustrate those not entirely aware about current research data. so, the aim of this paper is to present a brief review since the first molecular biology studies in colorectal carcinogenesis until recent advances in proteomics, in order to demonstrate the consistent production of new data supporting a realistic expectancy for a near future availability of high impact resources that may change dramatically the results of treatment of colorectal cancer.

Revista Brasileira de Coloproctologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-98802006000300016
Abstract: molecular biology studies are presently regarded as a major source for research in medicine, and an increasing number of medical professionals are interested in improving their knowledge and scientific production in this subject. however, structuring the research project may become a difficult challenge due to the wide range of methods and techniques available in this area, most of them depending on existing technological facilities and personal skill. the aim of this study is to contribute for the task of setting up a research project by presenting a brief review of most used structure models in molecular biology studies as well as its related principles and methods.
Célula tronco tumoral: novo conceito em carcinogênese colorretal
Pinho, Mauro de Souza Leite;
Revista Brasileira de Coloproctologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-98802009000100018
Abstract: despite the great number of studies using molecular biology tools several questions remain about the mechanisms of colorectal carcinogenesis. a recent concept has emerged from the literature regarding the existence of a specific group of indiferentiated cells situated at the bottom of intestinal crypts with a long life cycle that may last more than one year, described as intestinal stem cells. this particular property may explain the expected occurrence of a sequence of mutations necessary to the development of a carcinoma, which cannot be observed in a normal colonocyte with a mean cycle life of five days. another important evidence to this concept is the induction in rodents of a tumor with similar characteristics to the original human carcinoma by injection of a small number of these stem cells, which is not achieved by using large number of normal cancer cells. it is suggested that mutation of apc gene, present as an early step in most colorectal carcinomas, may contribute to a superpopulation of intestinal stem cells with consequent disturbance of proliferative epithelial balance.
A estória biomolecular do pólipo adenomatoso
Pinho, Mauro de Souza Leite;
Revista Brasileira de Coloproctologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-98802006000200012
Abstract: one of the main objectives of molecular biology studies is the understanding of biochemical mechanisms which will ultimately contribute to biological behavior of tissues as observed by macroscopic or microscopic analysis. hystological examination of normal colonic mucosa shows a relevant cellular turnover, determined by local concentration of proteins related to circle cell control. among these proteins, apc seems to be a key element, promoting inhibition of other important circle cell stimulating proteins as beta-catenin and survivin. thus, besides its role as genotypic landmark in familiar polipose patients, there are several strong evidences that apc acts in a trigger function in proliferative disorders of colonic mucosa from small adenomas to advanced infiltrative carcinomas. the current use of immunohystochemistry has provided relevant information of this close relationship between cellular protein profile and histological findings and have contributed to an improved comprehension of colorectal cancer carcinogenesis.
A Holocene pollen record of savanna establishment in coastal Amapá
Toledo, Mauro B. de;Bush, Mark B.;
Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652008000200013
Abstract: the main goal of this study was to investigate how climate and human activities may have influenced ecotonal areas of disjoint savannas within brazilian amazonia. the fossil pollen and charcoal records of lake márcio (amapá) were used to provide a holocene palaeoecological history of this region. detrended correspondence analysis (dca) was used to enhance the patterns of sample distribution along the sediment core. a marked vegetation change from closed forests with swamp elements to open flooded savanna at c. 5000 yrs bp was evident from the pollen record. charcoal analysis revealed a pattern of increased accumulation of particles coincident with the establishment of savannas, suggesting higher fire frequency and human impacts near the lake. a 550-year sedimentary hiatus suggests that the lake depended heavily on floodwaters from the amazon river, and that it became suddenly isolated from it. when sedimentation restarted in the lake, the environment had changed. a combination of factors, such as reduced river flooding, palaeofires and human occupation may have had a tremendous impact on the environment. as there are no other major changes in vegetation, after 4700 yrs bp, it is plausible to assume that the modern mosaic vegetation formed at that time.
Vegetation and hydrology changes in Eastern Amazonia inferred from a pollen record
Toledo, Mauro B. de;Bush, Mark B.;
Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652008000100014
Abstract: pollen, charcoal, and c14 analyses were performed on a sediment core obtained from lake tapera (amapá) to provide the palaeoenvironmental history of this part of amazonia. a multivariate analysis technique, detrended correspondence analysis, was applied to the pollen data to improve visualization of sample distribution and similarity. a sedimentary hiatus lasting 5,500 years was identified in the lake tapera. because the timing of the hiatus overlapped with the highest holocene sea-level, which would have increased the local water table preventing the lake from drying out, it is clear that sea-level was not important in maintaining the lake level. lake tapera probably depended on riverine flood waters, and the sedimentary gap was caused by reduced amazon river discharge, due to an extremely dry period in the andes (8,000-5,000 years bp), when precipitation levels markedly decreased. the lack of andean pollen (river transported) in the record after this event supports this interpretation. the pollen analysis shows that when sedimentation resumed in 1,620 cal. years bp, the vegetation around the lake was changed from forest into savanna. this record demonstrates the need to improve our understanding of climate changes and their associated impacts on vegetation dynamics.

How much to this text, we consider the idea of that education if relates to the possibility of senses and ways of being production, and that these happen in spaces, situations that provoke encounters and disencounters moment’s between bodies, histories, necessities and sensations. Therefore, the intention is to reflect the education inside of this described condition. We choose, starting points, the Philosophy in dialogues with the Psychoanalysis discourses. We construct to a reflection from situations/synopses that if elaborate having as cultural landmarks two ‘places’: (1) the Freud’ text - Some reflections on schoolboy psychology - and (2) the Robert Rossellini neorealist film - Germania Anno Zero. The discussion is weaved, beyond the indicated above, for the experience and infancy notion, as much in Walter Benjamin and Giorgio Agamben. We accept the supposition of the film’ synopses, the Edmund history in the after 2a. War and the vital necessities of the german people; and, on the basis of it, we focus the relation and coexistence between the boy, its father and the teacher figure. Bone regeneration after demineralized bone matrix and castor oil (Ricinus communis) polyurethane implantation
Leite, Fábio Renato Manzolli;Ramalho, Lizeti Toledo de Oliveira;
Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572008000200008
Abstract: innocuous biocompatible materials have been searched to repair or reconstruct bone defects. their goal is to restore the function of live or dead tissues. this study compared connective tissue and bone reaction when exposed to demineralized bovine bone matrix and a polyurethane resin derived from castor bean (ricinus communis). forty-five rats were assigned to 3 groups of 15 animals (control, bovine bone and polyurethane). a cylindrical defect was created on mandible base and filled with bovine bone matrix and the polyurethane. control group received no treatment. analyses were performed after 15, 45 and 60 days (5 animals each). histological analysis revealed connective tissue tolerance to bovine bone with local inflammatory response similar to that of the control group. after 15 days, all groups demonstrated similar outcomes, with mild inflammatory reaction, probably due to the surgical procedure rather than to the material. in the polymer group, after 60 days, scarce multinucleated cells could still be observed. in general, all groups showed good stability and osteogenic connective tissue with blood vessels into the surgical area. the results suggest biocompatibility of both materials, seen by their integration into rat mandible. moreover, the polyurethane seems to be an alternative in bone reconstruction and it is an inexhaustible source of biomaterial.
Auto-hemoterapia, interven??o do estado e bioética
Leite, Denise Ferreira;Barbosa, Patrícia Fernanda Toledo;Garrafa, Volnei;
Revista da Associa??o Médica Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-42302008000200026
Abstract: the increasingly frequent practice of autohemotherapy entails a potential risk to the health of individuals since it is scientifically unproven. there are practically no clinical studies showing the efficacy and safety of this procedure; only experimental research with questionable results from studies on human beings and animals. over the last years, the sanitary surveillance area has expanded its preventive and risk control actions based upon a precautionary philosophy in the private as well as the public sphere. by observing the theoretical and practical reference points of the "four ps" (prevention, protection, precaution and prudence), in accordance with the epistemology developed within intervention bioethics, sanitary surveillance actions are based upon legal administrative policing powers. these powers are understood to be the public administration's competence to set conditions on and restrict the use and benefit of goods, activities and individual rights, on behalf of the common well being of people or the state itself. the brazilian state, through its sanitary surveillance policing powers at the three levels of government, has intervened in the practice of autohemotherapy. considering the responsible state intervention in situations of collective interest, vulnerability and susceptibility, the present study proposed to analyze the practice of autohemotherapy in the light of sanitary surveillance actions and their relationship with the "four ps" of intervention bioethics.
