Abstract: in seven studied communities of western mexico, triatomine specimens were sympatrically collected, some with atypical morphological characteristics in contrast to pure specimens, which were presumed to be hybrids. more than 200 specimens of meccus pallidipennis and meccus longipennis with brown-yellow markings on dorsal connexival segments were collected in ahuacapán and quitupan. in la mesa, more than 60 specimens similar to meccus picturatus in most morphological characteristics (including size) were collected, although they presented a largely yellowish corium like m. pallidipennis. interfertility was proven between all of the studied wild hybrid specimens, as well as between all the experimental laboratory hybrids. two different phenotypes (m. picturatus and m. longipennis) were obtained from crosses between m. picturatus x m. picturatus and m. longipennis x m. longipennis from the three studied localities in state of nayarit as from la mesita. results support the hypothesis that the subspecific ranking of those triatomines may, therefore, be more appropriate because reproductive isolation has not been developed and complete interbreeding was recorded.

Abstract: Striatal monoamine oxidase (MAO)-mediated dopamine (DA) catabolism to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) is strongly increased, promoting oxidative stress that is reflected by an increase in glutathione levels. Fewer astrocytes are detected in the ventral midbrain (VM) and striatal matrix, suggesting decreased trophic support to dopaminergic neurons. The SN of these mice has dopaminergic neuronal degeneration in its rostral portion, and the pro-survival Erk1/2 signalling is diminished in nigra dopaminergic neurons, not associated with alterations to p-JNK or p-p38. Furthermore, inclusions of α-synuclein are evident in selected brain areas, both in the perikaryon (SN and paralemniscal nucleus) or neurites (motor and cingulate cortices, striatum and spinal cord). Interestingly, these α-synuclein deposits are detected with ubiquitin and PS129-α-synuclein in a core/halo cellular distribution, which resemble those observed in human Lewy bodies (LB).Smad3 deficiency promotes strong catabolism of DA in the striatum (ST), decrease trophic and astrocytic support to dopaminergic neurons and may induce α-synuclein aggregation, which may be related to early parkinsonism. These data underline a role for Smad3 in α-synuclein and DA homeostasis, and suggest that modulatory molecules of this signalling pathway should be evaluated as possible neuroprotective agents.PD is characterized by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the SN pars compacta. These neurons project to the ST and secrete DA in order to control voluntary movements and rewarding events [1]. Another significant feature of PD is the presence of cytoplasmic and neuritic inclusions of α-synuclein, known as LB and neurites. The aetiology of idiopathic PD is unknown, although current hypotheses focus on increased oxidative stress, aberrant protein folding, defective proteasome degradation or mitochondrial dysfunction. Given this diversity in the underlying molecular mechanisms, it has been suggested

American Journal of Analytical Chemistry (AJAC) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ajac.2014.514101
Abstract: Alkyl-bound silica was modified using chelating surfactants and the resulting adsorbent was used in immobilized metal affinity chromatography of proteins and peptides. Brij-76, a non-ionic amphiphilic surfactant with an alkyl moiety and an ethylene oxide chain, was reversible adsorbed to alkyl silica (C18). The hydroxyl group at the end of the ethylene oxide chain was chemically modified previously with an iminodiacetate functionality as chelating agent of transitional metal ions. Cu(II) was studied as immobilized ion for the adsorption of peptides and proteins. Three chromatographic supports were prepared having different Cu(II) capacities. For a low Cu(II) capacity case, the generated adsorbent behaved as a controlled access media preventing the adsorption of large molecular weight proteins, such as BSA, while small peptides, such as Angiotensin III, or amino acids could be retained. For a medium and high Cu(II) capacity, the synthesized adsorbent no longer behaved as a controlling access media and all molecules in this study, either large or small, were retained by the immobilized ion. Nonetheless, most of the BSA was strongly retained by the system and a pH change did not remove any of the adsorbed BSA while the small molecules were removed by the same pH change.

Abstract: Accurate flood prediction is an important tool for risk management and hydraulic works design on a watershed scale. The objective of this study was to calibrate and validate 24 linear and non-linear regression models, using only upstream data to estimate real-time downstream flooding. Four critical downstream estimation points in the Mataquito and Maule river basins located in central Chile were selected to estimate peak flows using data from one, two, or three upstream stations. More than one thousand paper-based storm hydrographs were manually analyzed for rainfall events that occurred between 1999 and 2006, in order to determine the best models for predicting downstream peak flow. The Peak Flow Index (IQP) (defined as the quotient between upstream and downstream data) and the Transit Times (TT) between upstream and downstream points were also obtained and analyzed for each river basin. The Coefficients of Determination (R2), the Standard Error of the Estimate (SEE), and the Bland-Altman test (ACBA) were used to calibrate and validate the best selected model at each basin. Despite the high variability observed in peak flow data, the developed models were able to accurately estimate downstream peak flows using only upstream flow data.

Revista Cubana de Ortopedia y Traumatolog?-a , 1997,
Abstract: a study of 110 patients with congenital pes cavus, who were attended at the "william soler" pediatric teaching hospital, is made. 106 of them were under 10 and the youngest ones were 5 years old. of these cases, 98 were bilateral and 11 unilateral, which makes a total of 209 feet. all of them were operated on by using a surgical technique consisting in a section of the plantar fascia and of the plantar short flexor muscle by attrition with a clamp. patients had to stand up and walked 24 hours after the operation. hydrocortisone was administered during and immediately after the operation. the results were positive in most of the cases.
Empleo de la oxigenación hiperbárica en las reconstrucciones oncológicas de cabeza y cuello
Abreus,Enrique; González Cabrera,Omar;
Revista Cubana de Estomatolog?-a , 1996,
Abstract: an updated revision of hiperbaric oxigenation was carried out, based on the results obtained during five years of experience, from january, 1990, to december, 1994, with patients who underwent oncological reconstructions of the neck and head, derivated from concomitant tumoral resections treated with hyperbaric oxigenation. the cicatrization level and the vitality of the flaps, were considered as satisfactory; as well as an important reduction of the sepsis degree reported among the patients treated in a combined form. the postoperative length of stay is also analyzed.
Primer reporte en Cuba de miasis intestinal por Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae)
Fuentes González,Omar; Risco Oliva,Grisel;
Revista Cubana de Medicina Tropical , 2009,
Abstract: introduction: hermetia illucens from stratiomyidae family is a relatively frequent species reported in cuba. it has been accused of causing myiasis in humans and animals. objective: to report for the first time in cuba, the occurrence of intestinal myiasis caused by this species. methods: the patient, a white woman aged 26 years presented with a picture of postprandial fluid discharges accompanied by abdominal pain. when the patient took an infusion of medicinal plants such as incense (artemisa abrotanum l.), mint (mentha nemorosa wild) and camomile (matricaria chamomilla l.), five larvae were ejected (2 large and 3 small). it was decided to admit the patient to the hospital for a week, but not more larvae were ejected. a gastroscopy showed antral chronic gastritis with acute foci and also other types of parasitosis, so mebendazol was prescribed. results: one of the ejected larvae was taken to the medical entomology department of "pedro kourí" institute of tropical medicine where it was taxonomically identified as hermetia illucens. conclusions: this report together with the pieces of knowledge provided by the world literature show the possibility that myasis caused by this species may occur in summer months when ripe unwashed fruits are consumed; physicians should be warned about this possible myiasis, hygienic measures should be applied when taking fruits and the study of antiparasitic properties of artemisa abrotanum l. must be assessed.
