Abstract: introduction: the tympanoplasty aims to reconstruct the tympanic membrane, restoring protection to the middle ear and improve hearing. in this study we evaluated the surgical results and audiometric this surgery, performed in the service of otorhinolaryngology, hc / ufpr by residents of the second year in the method: a retrospective study through review of medical records. results: among the 31 patients evaluated, there was closure of the perforation in 24 (80%) and hearing improvement with reduction or closure of the conductive gap by 60% and 26.7% respectively. discussion: the success rate of surgery was satisfactory and similar to that found in the literature, and factors such as age, presence of unilateral or bilateral pathology and size of perforation were not determinants of surgical success. conclusion: tympanoplasty performed by residents of the second year of residence showed satisfactory results regarding both surgical audiometric.

Abstract: Introdu o: A timpanoplastia tem por objetivo reconstruir a membrana timpanica, restaurando a prote o à orelha media e melhorando a audi o. Nesse estudo foram avaliados os resultados cirúrgicos e audiométricos dessa cirurgia, realizada no servi o de Otorrinolaringologia do HC/UFPR por residentes do 2o ano durante o ano de 2008, bem como alguns fatores que possam influenciar nos resultados. Método: Estudo retrospectivo, através de analise de prontuários. Resultados: Dos 31 pacientes avaliados, houve fechamento da perfura o em 24 (80%) e melhora da audi o com redu o ou fechamento do gap condutivo em 60% e 26,7% respectivamente. Discuss o: A taxa de sucesso da cirurgia foi satisfatória, sendo similar à encontrada na literatura, sendo que fatores como idade, presen a de patologia uni ou bilateral e tamanho da perfura o n o foram fatores determinantes deste sucesso cirúrgico. Conclus o: A timpanoplastia realizada por residentes do 2o ano da residência mostrou resultados satisfatórios tanto cirúrgicos quanto audiométricos.

Abstract: This review briefly describes the molecular principles underlying the biology of RNAi phenomenon and discuss the main technical issues regarding optimization of RNAi experimental design.In 1998 Fire and coll. coined the term RNA interference (RNAi) referring to the phenomenon of post-translational silencing of gene expression that occurs in response to the introduction of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) into a cell [1]. This phenomenon can result in highly specific suppression of gene expression. RNAi technology is rapidly spreading in research laboratories worldwide, as it is associated with a number of practical and theoretic advantages over preexisting methods of suppressing gene expression (Table 1). RNAi promises to revolutionize key areas of medical research, as demonstrated by the preliminary findings obtained in the fields of cancer, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. In this review the principles underlying this phenomenon as well as the technical challenges encountered while using RNAi for research purposes are discussed.Introduction of long dsRNA into a mammalian cell triggers a vigorous nonspecific shutdown of transcription and translation, in part due to activation of dsRNA-dependent protein kinase-R (PKR) [2]. Activated PKR phosphorylates the translation initiation factor EIF2: this effect, in association with activation of Rnase-L and induction of interferon production, halts protein synthesis and promotes apoptosis. Overall, this is believed to represent an antiviral defense mechanism [3]. Owing to this phenomenon, initial observations of RNAi induced by long dsRNA in plants [4] and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans [1] were at first applied to mammalian cells with little success. Abstract: O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a concep o enciclopédica de revolu o científica posta em prática pelo químico francês L.-B. Guyton de Morveau (1737-1816). Deslocando a análise do conhecimento químico das Luzes do programa tra ado por Lavoisier (1743-1794), sugerimos uma concep o revolucionária republicana, proclamada como resultado do esfor o de uma coletividade. Daremos destaque a três abordagens revolucionárias de Guyton de Morveau no ambito da química. A primeira foi sua atua o no ensino dessa ciência, cuja pedagogia e métodos de ensino foram fundamentais para sua imers o social. Além disso, entre 1770 e 1790, Guyton de Morveau teve desempenhos decisivos no seio da empresa enciclopédica e no seio da escola química francesa. The aim of this paper is to investigate the encyclopedic conception of scientific revolution implemented by the French chemist L-B. Guyton de Morveau (1737-1816). Shifting the analysis of chemical knowledge of the Enlightenment program outlined by Lavoisier (1743-1794), we suggest a Republican revolutionary conception, brought about as a result of a collective effort. We will highlight three of Guyton de Morveau's revolutionary approaches to Chemistry. The first was his role in the teaching of this science, the pedagogy and teaching methods of which were fundamental for its becoming embedded socially. In addition, between 1770 and 1790, Guyton de Morveau played central roles in the encyclopedic enterprise and the French chemistry school.

Abstract: 研究比较了1250~1400℃、10~50mpa应力范围内由两种方法(直接热压法和反应热压法)制得的al2o3-tin复合物的压缩蠕变特性.结果表明,由两种方法制备的al2o3-tin复合物的蠕变特性及显微结构没有明显差异.只是在tin加入量较低时,直接热压法制得的样品的应变速度略高于反应热压法制得的样品的应变速度.tin加入al2o3中提高了应变速度.复合物的应力指数约为2,表观活化能一般为500~600kj*mol-1.对显微结构进行了观察,简要讨论了蠕变机理.

Abstract:

This is a study where 60 temporomandibular joints were analysed. Method: dissection of anatomical parts, preserving TMJ itself, pterygoid lateral muscle, and its insertions. A special study of the articular disc was performed through histological slicing, for defining its structure and insertions. Results were compared with classical descriptions of different authors. Innervation of related structures is commented, as well as clinical aspects of TMJ conditions in view of its morphological and physiological aspects. Dental occlusion guide alterations, malocclusion, interfere on the TMJ movements, leading to meniscus traumatic compres-sion with possible chronic headache syndrome.

The Use of Yanai’s Generalized Coefficient of Determination to Reduce the Number of Variables in DEA Models  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper proposes a new method to reduce the dimensionality of input and output spaces in DEA models. The method is based on Yanai’s Generalized Coefficient of Determination and on the concept of pseudo-rank of a matrix. In addition, the paper suggests a rule to determine the cardinality of the subset of selected variables in a way to gain the maximal discretionary power and to suffer a minimal informational loss.
