An Explanatory Model to Guide Assessment, Risk and Diagnosis of Psychological Distress after Abortion  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Emerging data report 30% of women worldwide who obtain elective abortion experience negative and persistent psychological distress afterward. Studies find higher rates of psychological stress, depressive, substance, and anxiety disorders as well as suicidal behaviors, among some populations after abortion as compared to other reproductive events. Of concern, is that currenttheory and practice which promote abortion to relieve the stress of an unwanted pregnancy do not reflect new evidence. Moreover, the controversy on abortion inhibits research and treatment on its impact on women’s mental health. Thus, clinicians do not identify adverse psychological outcomes to abortion leaving many women untreated. Indeed, this knowledge-practice gap among healthcare providers may be the major reason that the incidence of adverse psychological outcomes after abortion continues to rise. Method: This paper proposes a theoretical understanding of psychological distress after abortion based on new data. A bio-psychosocial framework, including a psychological and biological theory, as well as a conceptual model is presented to explain the development of psychological distress after abortion. A comparison of risk factors between postpartum and post-abortion disorders is presented. Conclusion: A new theoretical model of psychological distress after abortion deepens understanding of the range of women’s responses to abortion and promotes evidence based practice. A scientific framework provides a much needed understanding of abortion aftermath as opposed to a political one. By providing assistance to clinicians in the identification, screening, and treatment of psychological disorders after abortion, this thesis aims to close the practice gap, and increase services after abortion to women who need them.
The NEI/NCBI dbGAP database: Genotypes and haplotypes that may specifically predispose to risk of neovascular age-related macular degeneration

Abstract: Before release of individual data, p-value information was obtained directly from the AREDS dbGAP website. Of the 35 variants with P < 10-6 examined, 23 significantly modified risk of neovascular AMD. Many variants located in tandem on 1q32-q22 including those in CFH, CFHR4, CFHR2, CFHR5, F13B, ASPM and ZBTB were significantly associated with AMD risk. Of these variants, single SNP analysis revealed that CFH rs572515 was the most significantly associated with AMD risk (P < 10-6). Haplotype analysis supported our findings of single SNP association, demonstrating that the most significant haplotype, GATAGTTCTC, spanning CFH, CFHR4, and CFHR2 was associated with the greatest risk of developing neovascular AMD (P < 10-6). Other than variants on 1q32-q22, only two SNPs, rs9288410 (MAP2) on 2q34-q35 and rs2014307 (PLEKHA1/HTRA1) on 10q26 were significantly associated with AMD status (P = .03 and P < 10-6 respectively). After controlling for smoking history, gender and age, the most significant gene-gene interaction appears to be between rs10801575 (CFH) and rs2014307 (PLEKHA1/HTRA1) (P < 10-11). The best genotypic fit for rs10801575 and rs2014307 was an additive model based on LRT. After applying a Bonferonni correction, no other significant interactions were identified between any other SNPs.This is the first replication study on the NEI dbGAP SNPs, demonstrating that alleles on 1q, 2q and 10q may predispose an individual to AMD.Advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of legal blindness in developed countries. Clinically two forms of advanced AMD are recognized: geographic atrophy and neovascular. Geographic atrophy is characterized by a slow progressive degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), resulting in the gradual loss of the photoreceptors. The neovascular form is characterized by the growth of new abnormal blood vessels from beneath the retina that can cause severe and rapid vision loss due to hemorrhage and exudation.

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of haemoparasites of dogs attending ECWA veterinary Clinic, Bukuru, Jos south local government area in Plateau state, Nigeria, and to determine the effective control strategy. From July to September 2011, blood samples of 150 dogs were collected and examined under light microscope. The age, sex and breed of the dogs were also recorded. Wet and unstained blood film shows no motility hence no motile haemoparasite while the Giemsa stained blood smear techniques of both thick and thin film, showed the presence of only Babesia spp in 89 (59.3%), while 61 (40.7%) were negative for any haemoparasite.

Abstract: Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics is a popular qualitative research interpretive method aiming to explore the meaning of individual experiences in relation to understanding human interpretation. Gadamer identifies that authentic engagement with reading requires awareness of the inter-subjective nature of understanding in order to promote a reflective engagement with the text. The main concepts of Gadamer’s view of reading and understanding are explored in this paper in relation to interpreting text. Concepts such as; inter-subjectivity, Being, authenticity, fore-structure, pre-suppositions, prejudice, temporality and history are all help to enhance health and social science researchers’ understanding of his theory and its application.
Making Sense of Uncertainty: An Examination of Environmental Interpretation

Abstract: Uncertainty in the environment has implications for an organisation’s structures, strategies and processes. By extending an existing uncertainty framework and measuring how it is influenced by strategic decision-making,entrepreneurial orientation and organisation structure, this paper explores the process of environmental interpretation. Hypotheses are formulated for testing on the European airport industry. The results show that a fourth type of uncertainty can be meaningfully added to the existing three-part framework; that the four types should be treated as separate constructs; and that rational strategic decision-making, entrepreneurial orientation and organic organisation structures are positively related to environmental uncertainty. Moreover, these variables exert different levels of influence at different stages of the interpretation process. Implications for management are considered along with study limitations and recommendations for future research.
Predicting success of oligomerized pool engineering (OPEN) for zinc finger target site sequences

Abstract: Analysis of the base composition of experimentally validated ZFP target sites identified important constraints on the DNA sequence space that can be effectively targeted using OPEN. Using alternate encodings to represent ZFP target sites, we implemented Na?ve Bayes and Support Vector Machine classifiers capable of distinguishing "active" targets, i.e., ZFP binding sites that can be targeted with a high rate of success, from those that are "inactive" or poor targets for ZFPs generated using current OPEN technologies. When evaluated using leave-one-out cross-validation on a dataset of 135 experimentally validated ZFP target sites, the best Na?ve Bayes classifier, designated ZiFOpT, achieved overall accuracy of 87% and specificity+ of 90%, with an ROC AUC of 0.89. When challenged with a completely independent test set of 140 newly validated ZFP target sites, ZiFOpT performance was comparable in terms of overall accuracy (88%) and specificity+ (92%), but with reduced ROC AUC (0.77). Users can rank potentially active ZFP target sites using a confidence score derived from the posterior probability returned by ZiFOpT.ZiFOpT, a machine learning classifier trained to identify DNA sequences amenable for targeting by OPEN-generated zinc finger arrays, can guide users to target sites that are most likely to function successfully in vivo, substantially reducing the experimental effort required. Abstract: David Daniel Derse was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 22, 1949. After graduating from California State University Northridge with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1973, Dave worked as a research technician at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles from 1974-1977 in the laboratory of Dr. Richard L. Momparler, studying the biochemical pharmacology of new anti-neoplastic agents. Dave earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1982 from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. His graduate adviser at SUNY Buffalo was Dr. Yung-Chi "Tommy" Cheng who moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979, and Dave completed his doctoral studies while working with Tommy at UNC. While a graduate student in 1981, Dave co-authored a paper with Dr. Gertrude B. Elion who was later awarded The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine [1]. He trained with Dr. James Casey as a post-doctoral fellow from 1982-1986, first at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at New Orleans and later at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. While in the Casey laboratory, Dave identified the enhancer elements in the long terminal repeat that regulate bovine leukemia virus (BLV) gene expression, publishing the data in Science [2]. Dave joined NCI-Frederick as a Senior Staff Fellow in 1986, becoming a tenured Senior Investigator in 1991. In 2004, Dave became Head of the Retrovirus Gene Expression Section in the HIV Drug Resistance Program at NCI-Frederick. Dave was also an Adjunct Professor in the graduate program in Genetics at George Washington University and served on the Executive Committee of the Center of Excellence in HIV/AIDS and Cancer Virology, Center for Cancer Research at NCI-Frederick.During his tenure at NCI-Frederick, Dave identified and characterized the molecular mechanisms of infection, replication, and pathogenesis of different retroviruses, including equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), bovine leukemia virus (BLV), Moloney murine leukemia virus
