Abstract: Cholesteatoma has been known to be associated with multiple complications either extracranially or intracranially. Among the extracranial complications, mastoiditis and mastoid abscess are the most common. Bezold’s abscess formation with cholesteatoma is a rare occurrence but when present can lead to sinister sequalae if not properly managed. The treatment of cholesteatoma is mainly by surgical exploration namely mastoidectomy. The aim of treatment is to eradicate the diseased mastoid and to prevent subsequent complications. Beside surgical intervention, the patient will also require intensive systemic and topical antibiotic therapy. With proper treatment patient will be hindered from experiencing unwanted complications.
Intersubjetividad y autorreferencialidad en la teoría ética de C.S. Nino
Parmigiani, Matías;
Diánoia , 2011,
Abstract: in el constructivismo ético, c.s. nino pointed out that "discussion and inter-subjective decision is the most trustable procedure when trying to arrive to moral truth". this epistemic thesis about moral knowledge clearly embraces a political assessment: in order to succeed at impartially satisfying the interests of everyone in a community, "the interchange of ideas and each person's necessity to justify in the face of the others" play a pivotal role. on the contrary, when the task in question is related to the auto-referential dimension of morality, the derivations of that thesis in nino's work become certainly unclear. by attempting to overstep this bound, i will explore in the present paper the connection that is supposed to exist between the social practice of moral communication and the discovery and justification of the auto-referential principles of behavior.
El interior en el Modernismo
Estudios filológicos , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0071-17132006000100001
Abstract: this paper deals with the figure of the interior (the room) heavily decorated in different works of the hispano-american modernism as a way of linking the subjective and social aspect. based on the work by walter benjamin about paris in the ninetieth century, the figure of the interior is related to the liberal modernization by the fin de siècle, to the acquisition of commodities, to the new aesthetic tendencies, to the refinement and exotic aspects, to the question of cultural identity, and to the function of the poet in society
Ideas y Valores , 2011,
Abstract: minimalism proposes a semantics that does not account for speakers' intuitions about the truth conditions of a range of sentences or utterances. thus, a challenge for this view is to offer an explanation of how its assignment of semantic contents to these sentences is grounded in their use. such an account was mainly offered by soames, but also suggested by cappelen and lepore. the article criticizes this explanation by presenting four kinds of counterexamples to it, and arrives at the conclusion that minimalism has not successfully answered the above-mentioned challenge.

La protesta social y sus representaciones en la prensa argentina entre 1996 y 2002
Artese, Matías;
Perfiles latinoamericanos , 2011,
Abstract: this article presents the main findings of a research on the relation between physical confrontations and its interpretations in six episodes of protest between 1996 and 2002 in argentina. in this period a profound economic and employment crisis affected most of the country's population. consequently, it was a period in which a general increase of the cycle of social protests took place. employing tools provided by critical discourse analysis, we analyze the properties attributed to each of the six protests and repressive reaction of the state, through statements published by the press. the main objective is to review the field of dispute over the meaning of the actions and characteristics of the interpretations published at the precise moments that the institutional violence was applied, as the beginning of an explanation to the criminalization of protest.
La conflictiva relación entre participación institucionalizada y confianza: el caso de Buenos Aires
Landau, Matías;
Perfiles latinoamericanos , 2009,
Abstract: this paper explores the relationship between trust and institutionalized participation. trust is defined as a subjective expectation about the world that can be disappointed. it is assumed to be related to time, authority, and knowledge. further, it allows for a retrospective evaluation. in light of this definition, we first analyze the links between participation and trust in established relations between public authorities and citizens in liberal democracies. next, we examine how institutionalized participation is currently conceived as an efficient tool for overcoming citizens' mistrust of political authorities and institutions. finally, we argue that participation does not assuage that mistrust, but transforms the nature of the relationship between authorities and citizens, giving rise to what might be characterized as a "government of mistrust".
La participación en las políticas públicas y los límites de la metáfora espacial
Landau, Matías;
Política y cultura , 2008,
Abstract: the promotion of the incorporation of citizen participation in the public politics starts, in many cases, from an argument based in a spatial metaphor, according to which the aim would be to "approach" the state to the citizens. the article discusses the usefulness of such a metaphor, for it leads to a normative or evaluative analysis that prevents an understanding of the way in which the participation modifies the bond established between the public institutions and the citizens. considering the case of the city of buenos aires, the distancing is analysed not as a metaphor, but as a myth; and the inclusion of participation is studied as a practice that tends to demystify the government.
Revista chilena de literatura , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-22952011000300008
Abstract: nowadays, one of the most concrete ways to measure an author's cultural and artistic impact is the amount of reinterpretations over his works (in literature, theatre, cinema, etc.). each one of these versions produces new interpretations and perspectives over the original texts, in a constant dialogue. one of the most adapted latin-american authors to cinema is mario vargas llosa, which reveals the importance of a critical study of the film versions of his works. thus, this article reviews the three main adaptations of his novels (the time of the hero, captain pantoja and the special service, and the feast of the goat) by analyzing central aspects pertaining either to structures or themes in order to elucidate certain dimensions relevant not only to each particular adaptation, but also to this discursive interchange in general.
