Wrinkled 1 (WRI1) Homologs, AP2-Type Transcription Factors Involving Master Regulation of Seed Storage Oil Synthesis in Castor Bean (Ricinus communisL.)  [PDF]

Abstract: Among APETALA2 (AP2)-type plant specific transcription factor family, WRINKLED1 (WRI1), has appeared to be a master gene transcriptionally regulating a set of carbon metabolism- and fatty acid synthesis (FAS)-related genes responsible for seed specific triacylglycerols (TAGs) storage in oil plants. B3 type transcription factors, such as ABI3 and FUS3, are known to be involved in seed development, such as seed storage protein synthesis and maturation. Based on the recent whole genome sequence data of castor bean (Ricinus communis L.), putative WRI1 homologs (RcWRI1, RcWRI2) specifically expressed in castor bean seed have been identified by comparing organ specific expression profiles among seed development-related transcription factors, seed storage specific genes (Ricin, RcOleosin) and a set of FAS genes including genes for sucrose synthase (RcSUS2), biotin carboxyl carrier protein (a subunit of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, RcBCCP2) and ketoacyl-acyl carrier protein synthase (RcKAS1). Immunoreactive signals with WRI1, FUS3 and ABI5-related polypeptides were also detected in seed specifically, consistent with the expression profiles of seed development-related genes. The WRI1 binding consensus sites, [CnTnG](n)(7)[CG], designated as the AW-box, were found at the promoter region of RcBCCP2 and RcKAS1. Thus, RcWRI1 possibly play a pivotal role in seed specific TAGs storage during seed development by directly activating FAS -related genes.

Abstract: La lengua es uno de los principales factores que permiten diferenciar a un grupo étnico de otro. Sin embargo, la relación que los grupos étnicos tienen con respecto a su lengua no es invariable y el examen de casos particulares refleja una amplia gama de matices. Dada esta ambivalencia propia del tema, este artículo busca examinar qué propiedades puede asumirse que son necesarias para establecer un vínculo entre una lengua y un grupo étnico, para posteriormente explicar, por medio de algunos ejemplos, cómo dicho vínculo puede llegar a encontrarse más en una percepción compartida por el grupo que en un uso efectivo de la lengua.

Solitary bone cysts are benign, fluid-filled cavities that most often occur in childhood. Several minimally invasive decompression methods have been proposed; however, performing a surgical procedure through the thinned overlying cortex raises the risk of pathological fracture and neurovascular damage, especially in lesions located in the bone diaphysis. We describe a new technique that circumvents these problems: tunneling through the normal cortex and medullary space with a flexible reamer, placing a retrograde medullary nail for cyst decompression.

A Method to Evaluate an Urban Area by Using the Model That Calculates a Number of Facilities from an Area and a Population  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper presents 1) a new mathematical model improved from a conventional model that calculates a number of facility from an area and a population in a town and, 2) by using this model, a method to evaluate the enrichment (in other words, convenience or enough) of facilities in the town where many high-rise apartments have been built (the area is hereinafter referred to as the high-rise apartment town). The conventional model uses only a nighttime population, but this paper considers a daytime population in addition to the nighttime population. Also, there has not been the method to evaluate the enrichment of facilities in a town, but we can evaluate it using this model. We apply this method to 23 special wards in Tokyo and the highrise apartment towns, the results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

To investigate the association between polymorphisms (SNP) in the p53 and murine double minute 2 homolog (MDM2) promoter 309 in cervical carcinogenesis. SNP at p53 codon 72 polymorphisms and MDM2 promoter 309 (T/G) together with human papillomavirus (HPV) types were examined in a total of 187 cervical smear samples using real time PCR. 27 cases with HPV types 16 and/or 18 had significantly higher frequency of the TG + GG genotype and G allele than 56 with other types of high-risk HPV (P = 0.0136). 48 cases with HPV types 52 and/or 58 had significantly higher frequency of the TG + GG genotype and G allele than 56 with other types of high-risk HPV (P = 0.001). Our studies have demonstrated that the frequency of G allele in MDM2 promoter 309 increased from LSIL to HSIL and that there was an increased OR for G allele in HSIL cases with high-risk HPV types including 52 and 58. It is known that geographically different oncogenic HPV types 52 and 58 are more prevalent than 16 and 18 in a Japanese population.

Abstract: Different models of factor structure were proposed for the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) as a measure of coping style. This study confirmed psychometric properties and stability of the factor structure and differences among models for various age groups. The CISS of the Japanese version and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) were administered to a sample of 781 Japanese workers. Using factor analysis, three-, four-, and five-factor models were examined. Simultaneous multiple-group analysis was conducted using samples of 568 workers and 507 students. The five-factor model was more robust than the original three- and four-factor models. Reliabilities and applicability for a wide age range were confirmed. In terms of predictive validity, symptoms of somatization, obsessive-compulsiveness, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, and anxiety were positively related with Rumination coping.

Abstract: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are well known to have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease from epidemiological studies. Recently, CKD has also been shown to be related to neurological disorders, not only ischemic brain injury but also cognitive impairment. This cerebrorenal connection is considered to involve small vessel disease in both the kidney and brain, based on their hemodynamic similarities. Clinical studies suggest that markers for CKD such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), proteinuria, and albuminuria may be helpful to predict brain small vessel disease, white matter lesions (WMLs), silent brain ischemia (SBI), and microhemorrhages. Recently, changes in the vascular system of the brain have been shown to contribute to the onset and progression of cognitive impairment, not only vascular dementia but also Alzheimer's disease. Patients with CKD are also reported to have higher risk of impaired cognitive function in the future compared with non-CKD subjects. These results indicate that CKD markers may be helpful to predict the future risk of neuronal disease.

Abstract: Auxin signaling plays a key role in the regulation of various growth and developmental processes in higher plants. Auxin response factors (ARFs) are transcription factors that regulate the expression of auxin-response genes. The osarf24-1 mutant contains a truncation of domain IV in the C-terminal dimerization domain of a rice ARF protein, OsARF24. This mutant showed auxin-deficient phenotypes and reduced sensitivity to auxin. However, OsARF24 protein contains an SPL-rich repression domain in its middle region and acts as a transcriptional repressor. These results imply that the C-terminal dimerization domain, especially the C-terminal half of domain IV, is essential for the proper regulation of OsARF24 function as a transcriptional repressor in rice.
