PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0073107
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that higher levels of systemic inflammation in a community sample of non-demented subjects older than seventy years of age are associated with reduced diffusion anisotropy in brain white matter and lower cognition. Ninety-five older persons without dementia underwent detailed clinical and cognitive evaluation and magnetic resonance imaging, including diffusion tensor imaging. Systemic inflammation was assessed with a composite measure of commonly used circulating inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor-alpha). Tract-based spatial statistics analyses demonstrated that diffusion anisotropy in the body and isthmus of the corpus callosum was negatively correlated with the composite measure of systemic inflammation, controlling for demographic, clinical and radiologic factors. Visuospatial ability was negatively correlated with systemic inflammation, and diffusion anisotropy in the body and isthmus of the corpus callosum was shown to mediate this association. The findings of the present study suggest that higher levels of systemic inflammation may be associated with lower microstructural integrity in the corpus callosum of non-demented elderly individuals, and this may partially explain the finding of reduced higher-order visual cognition in aging.
Protein hydrolysates from the alga Chlorella vulgaris 87/1 with potentialities in immunonutrition

Abstract: chlorella vulgaris (chlorophyta, chlorophyceae) has received a particular attention in the programmes of microalgae utilisation in biotechnology. enzymatic hydrolysis of cell proteins represents a very promising method to increase protein digestibility and thus, for obtaining hydrolysates with improved nutritional and functional properties. however, this technology has been little approached and the biological evaluation of hydrolysates has had a strictly nutritional nature. the design of hydrolysis conditions that combined for the first time, the use of c.vulgaris 87/1 treated with ethanol and pancreatin at ph values of 7.5-8.0, led to a product with a degree of hydrolysis of 20-22% and yields of 50-55%, characterised by a high digestibility (97.2%) and nitrogen solubility over a wide ph range (2.0- 10.0). hydrolysis curves were fitted to an exponential model, common to many food proteins. the bulk of the product dry matter consists of soluble peptides and free amino acids (47.7%) with three main peptides of molecular masses between 2 and 5 kda. the oral administration of chlorella hydrolysate (500 mg/kg) to undernourished balb/c mice provided benefits in terms of liver protein metabolism and the induction of anabolic processes in gut mucosa. the hydrolysate also enhanced the immunological recovery, as judged by the stimulation of haemopoiesis, monocyte-macrophage system activation, as well as humoral and cell mediated immune functions, like t-dependent antibody response and the reconstitution of delayed-type hypersensitivity (dth) response. these results represent the first findings in the world concerning the immunomodulating effects of a microalgae protein hydrolysate.
Relativistic corrections to the Sellmeier equation allow derivation of Demjanov's formula
Peter C. Morris
Physics , 2010,
Abstract: A recent paper by V.V. Demjanov in Physics Letters A reported a formula that relates the magnitude of Michelson interferometer fringe shifts to refractive index and absolute velocity. We show here that relativistic corrections to the Sellmeier equation allow an alternative derivation of the formula.
MAL RADICAL EN EL ESTADO LOCKEANO: EL DESCUIDO DE LAS EMOCIONES POLíTICAS
Nussbaum,Martha C;

Abstract: Internal consistency and factorial structure of the Beck Hopelessness Scale among Mexican students The Beck Hopelessness Scale was applied in a sample of 971 male and female students, chosen at random sampling from Mexico City, with an average age of 16.75 years. Results were compared to those reported by Beck, Weissman, Lester and Trexler (1974). Results showed adequate reliability (≥ 0.70) in the total sample by gender. Factorial structure matched only in the Affective factor as reported by Beck et al. (1974) with respect to the total sample. Differences in saturation and factorial structure in both sexes were observed. It was concluded that the factor structure of Beck Hopelessness Scale registers different factor structure in the total sample, according to sex.

Nussbaum, Martha C.
Isegoría , 1995,
Abstract: Not available.
Nussbaum, Martha C.
Isegoría , 2002,
Abstract: The new possibilities opened up by scientific research, particularly in the area of genetic, raise hitherto unknown moral perplexities and, at the same time, do force us to rethink questions and redefine concepts which use to work adequately up to now. So, for example, regarding to theories of justice: we are used to having a relatively broad agreement on the concept of person, and the discussion was usually focused on the kind of goods which must be distributed to a given group of people. But the possibility of transforming people by changing their talents, and in this way, transforming some features of the population according to certain current criteria, opens up an important discussion insofar those transformations could be considered resources and, if so, been redistributed themselves. However, the fact that some sort of alterations could or, even more, should be made in order to achieve the good for future children embodies the risk consisting in the impoverishment and homogenization of the society, or the obliteration of valuable forms of life and culture. Since this incipient possibility arises paradoxes and disturbing threats, the rigorous reflection represents a basic indispensable critical tool.

Abstract: the objective of this study was characterizing the chemical composition of plant tissue in mint and its relation to the mineral concentration in soil. the fresh weight, dry weight, height and number of knots, and the elemental concentration in aerial part of plants from 35 commercial crops at the time of harvesting were evaluated, as well as the soil chemical properties. the concentration of macronutrients in the plant tissue of mint showed the next order (% dm): k (1.07-7.23) gt; n (1.57-4.74) gt; ca (0.66-1.36) gt; p (0.24-0.64) gt; mg (0.14-0.60), and that one for the microelements (mg·kg-1): fe (89-596), mn (19-303), zn (47-134), b (16-108), cu (8-13). no significant relations between the nutrients in soil and plant that permit to explain, in some degree, the growth variables were found. we would find significant correlations between mg and p in soil and their concentrations in plants (r=0,65** y 0,60* respectively) and between mn in soil and its concentration in plant (r=-0,60*). the best correlation was found between the k/ mg ratio in soil and mg in plant tissue (r=-0,73**) making these clear the antagonism between both nutrients and importance of cation balance in soil. the concentration of nutrients in mint was similar to the one reported in the other crops. in general, we can say that soils cultivated with mint donacute;t show limitations in regards to nutrient availability, probably, due to the intensive management of fertilization.
