Efficacy of a Topical Aromatic Rub (Vicks VapoRub®)-Speed of Action of Subjective Nasal Cooling and Relief from Nasal Congestion  [PDF]
Ron Eccles, Martez Jawad, David L. Ramsey, J. David Hull
Open Journal of Respiratory Diseases (OJRD) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojrd.2015.51002
Abstract: Vicks VapoRub® (VVR) is a pharmaceutical preparation containing a combination of levomenthol, eucalyptus oil, turpentine oil and camphor as active ingredients, and thymol, cedarwood oil, and white soft paraffin as excipients. VVR is a petrolatum-based ointment to be either applied topically to the chest, throat, and back or added to hot water and the aromatic vapours inhaled. When used topically, the actives are evaporated by body temperature and inspired. The main therapeutic effects are the feeling of relief from nasal congestion and relief from cough. These were primarily experienced by patients as the trigeminal and olfactory impact of the aromatics and were hypothesized to be experienced within minutes. This was a randomized, single-(Investigator) blind, controlled, 2-arm (VVR vs. petrolatum), parallel design pilot study in 50 otherwise healthy adult patients suffering from common cold and experiencing nasal congestion. Speed to detection of a sensation of nasal cooling and nasal decongestion was assessed following application of the recommended amount of product. The time to first experience of a sensation of nasal cooling was significantly (p < 0.001) faster for patients who received VVR compared to control (median times of 23 and 99 seconds respectively). VVR delivered a statistically significant sensation of nasal cooling at all times from 12 seconds to 15 minutes after product application. The time to first experience of a sensation of nasal decongestion was significantly (p = 0.0102) faster for patients who received VVR compared to control (median times of 62 and 126 seconds respectively). VVR delivered a statistically significant sensation of nasal decongestion at all times from 62 seconds to 15 minutes after product application. No adverse events were reported during the study. Conclusion: Patients using Vicks VapoRub® as directed experienced significant differences from control for sensation of nasal cooling in 12 seconds and the sensation of nasal decongestion in 62 seconds.

Abstract: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled exploratory trial, 35 human subjects suffering from early symptoms of common cold received Iota-Carrageenan (0.12%) in a saline solution three times daily for 4 days, compared to placebo.Administration of Iota-Carrageenan nasal spray reduced the symptoms of common cold (p = 0.046) and the viral load in nasal lavages (p = 0.009) in patients with early symptoms of common cold. Pro-inflammatory mediators FGF-2, Fractalkine, GRO, G-CSF, IL-8, IL-1α, IP-10, IL-10, and IFN-α2 were reduced in the Iota-Carrageenan group.Iota-Carrageenan nasal spray appears to be a promising treatment for safe and effective treatment of early symptoms of common cold. Larger trials are indicated to confirm the results.Common cold is the most prevalent contagious viral disease in humans. It is caused by a variety of viral pathogens with human rhinoviruses (HRV) being the most abundant ones. Affecting the upper respiratory system, symptoms like blocked nose, cough and sneezing are most common [1,2]. The socioeconomic losses associated with viral respiratory tract infections, however, are huge [3,4] with enormous direct and indirect costs for our health care system [5]. Colds also pose a threat for the very young or old, ailing and/or high risk groups like immunocompromised patients, COPD patients, asthmatics or lung transplant recipients [1,6]. A wide range of remedies is sold on prescription and over the counter, but evidence-based medicine systematic reviews conclude that there is still no reliable prevention or cure available and potential serious side effects of popular products also have to be considered. Given the multiple causes of common cold, the Cochrane collaboration suggested to focus future research efforts on non virus-specific compounds [7]. Effective formulations containing antiviral agents are needed for the safe and efficacious treatment of common cold symptoms and the containment of viral propagation. Potential side effects sh
Depletive Water Balance and High Vulnerability Due to Conflicts over Access and Rights  [PDF]

Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2014.611095
Abstract:

Sustainable water supply problem becomes strategic when inelastic demand levels are overhauling maximum available supplies. The situation is more acute when the groundwater recharge area is heavily populated, consist of urban, industrial and agricultural areas and above all have typical karstic morphology and extensive regions of thin or null soil cover. During winter season the infiltrated water mixed with the wastewater leaking from poorly designed cesspits and wastewater overflow from the treatment plants of the adjacent settlements. Currently, most of the recharge area is disturbed due to the ongoing urban development in Beitar Elite and Tzur Hadassah in conjunction with the planned Security Fence (apartheid wall) threatens to extend over ~70% of the aquifer recharge area. Such massive destruction in a small watershed leads to considerable decrease in springs discharge and could completely dry-out the springs at the upper part of the valley. The aim of this research is to improve understanding of the hydrologic processes controlling water quantity and quality of springs discharging small (<1E6 m3/yr) basin in the mountain aquifer.

BLACK GOLD & FLUCTUATION: A CRONIC EFFECT ANALYSIS ON OIL IMPORTER & EXPORTER ECONOMIES (1973-2009)
MUHAMMAD JAWAD
Academic Research International , 2012,
Abstract: This paper studies the macro-economic dynamics in oil exporting economies and oil importing economies using Panel VAR approach. This learning in divergent with the majority other researches which center of attention is only developing net oil exporters –instead ofimporters and exporters economies and in accumulation to explore macro-economic fluctuations, formulate accessible fresh approaching into the collision of oil shocks on macroeconomic variables. Instability on the supply side of the oil market give explanation thelargest part of the observed oil price unpredictability and are mainly caused and effect on the oil exporting economies. The oil shocks are due to demand and supply desired difference by the developing economies and developed economies. These shocks also negative effect oil importing economies (Pakistan, India & Bangladesh) GDP meanwhile these shocks also create impact and un-stability on oil exporting economies (Kuwait, Iran and Saudia) GDP.

A Zariski Topology for Modules
Jawad Abuhlail
Mathematics , 2010,
Abstract: Given a duo module $M$ over an associative (not necessarily commutative) ring $R,$ a Zariski topology is defined on the spectrum $\mathrm{Spec}^{\mathrm{fp}}(M)$ of {\it fully prime} $R$-submodules of $M$. We investigate, in particular, the interplay between the properties of this space and the algebraic properties of the module under consideration.
Semiunital Semimonoidal Categories (Applications to Semirings and Semicorings)
Jawad Abuhlail
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: The category $_{A}\mathbb{S}_{A}$ of bisemimodules over a semialgebra $A,$ with the so called Takahashi's tensor product $-\boxtimes_{A}-,$ is semimonoidal but not monoidal. Although not a unit in $_{A}\mathbb{S}%_{A},$ the base semialgebra $A$ has properties of a semiunit (in a sense which we clarify in this note). Motivated by this interesting example, we investigate semiunital semimonoidal categories $(\mathcal{V}%, \bullet, I)$ as a framework for studying notions like semimonoids (semicomonoids) as well as a notion of monads (comonads) which we call $\mathbb{J}$-monads ($\mathbb{J}$-% comonads) with respect to the endo-functor $\mathbb{J}:=\mathbf{I}\bullet -\simeq -\bullet \mathbf{I}:\mathcal{V}\longrightarrow \mathcal{V}.$ This motivated also introducing a more generalized notion of monads (comonads) in arbitrary categories with respect to arbitrary endo-functors. Applications to the semiunital semimonoidal variety $(_{A}\mathbb{S}%_{A},\boxtimes_{A},A)$ provide us with examples of semiunital $A$-semirings (semicounital $A$-semicorings) and semiunitary semimodules (semicounitary semicomodules) which extend the classical notions of unital rings (counital corings) and unitary modules (counitary comodules).
Exact Sequences of Semimodules over Semirings
Jawad Abuhlail
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce and investigate a new notion of exact sequences of semimodules over semirings relative to the canonical image factorization. Several homological results are proved using the new notion of exactness including some restricted versions of the Short Five Lemma and the Snake Lemma opening the door for introducing and investigating homology objects in such categories. Our results apply in particular to the variety of commutative monoids extending results in homological varieties.
A Note on Coseparable Coalgebras
Jawad Abuhlail
Mathematics , 2008,
Abstract: Given a coalgebra $C$ over a commutative ring $R,$ we show that $C$ can be considered as a (not necessarily counital) $C^{\ast op}$-coring. Moreover, we show that this coring has a left (right) counity if and only if $C$ is coseparable as an $R$-coalgebra.
Exact Sequences in Non-Exact Categories (An Application to Semimodules)
Jawad Abuhlail
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: We consider a notion of exact sequences in any -not necessarily exact- pointed category relative to a given (E;M)-factorization structure. We apply this notion to introduce and investigate a new notion of exact sequences of semimodules over semirings relative to the canonical image factorization. Several homological results are proved using the new notion of exactness including some restricted versions of the Short Five Lemma and the Snake Lemma opening the door for introducing and investigating homology objects in such categories. Our results apply in particular to the variety of commutative monoids extending results in homological varieties to relative homological varieties.
