Abstract: in this article we focus peul's (programa de estudos sobre o uso da língua) contribution to brazilian sociolinguistics, and, specifically, to variationist studies. we start by providing an overview of rio de janeiro variable phenomena. then we show the spread of variation domain and emphasize the systematicity and regularity of a linguistic variable - the formal parallelism - on phenomena of language variation and change, and show some patterns of correlation between language and social structure.

Abstract: the authors analyse the perceptions about the brazilian democracy, based on the information about the support to the political system and to its dynamics, the values and opinions about citizenship and individual rights, and the perception about the country problems. the data come from 2002 brazilian electoral study.

Abstract: this research was developed in two swine housings in the phases of nursery and finishing: in two pens each, in two farms located at salto county, sp, with the objective to evaluate ammonia and concentrations, and fungi presence besides estimating the occupational risk of exposure to these environmental agents. the evaluations were done according to recommended by the norms nr-15, niosh e acgih. results indicated significant difference in ammonia concentration in relation to the hour, the housing and to the day period. they also indicate negligence to sanitary ventilation matter in nursery housing with consequent higher level of ammonia; which are linked to the air circulation inside housing, the manure and curtain management, housing typology, and to local climate conditions; besides swine crowd and density. total dust concentration was higher in nursery buildings (0.84-9.16mg.m-3) than in finishing (0.84-3.34mg m-3), while inhale dust was higher in the nursery, however lower than 3.67mg m-3, and within the labor welfare limits. there were found fungi from genus aspergillus, penicillium and neurospora in suspension in the internal environmental of the studied housings.

Abstract: purpose: to determine the prevalence of lymphedema and its associated factors in breast cancer patients. methods: two hundred and fifty women that had undergone more than six months of breast cancer treatment and were being treated at an oncology reference hospital in juiz de fora, minas gerais, brazil. they were interviewed and submitted to physical evaluation. data from the patients' medical records regarding the treatment of breast cancer, the extent of axillary intervention and the tumor were analyzed. lymphedema was diagnosed when the difference between both upper limbs was 2 cm or more by perimetry. the groups of women with and without lymphedema were compared regarding the possible risk factors, and central tendency, dispersion, and prevalence were measured, with a significance level of 95%. results: one hundred and twelve women (44.8%) presented lymphedema. a significant difference was found between the groups of women with and without lymphedema regarding the median numbers of removed lymph nodes (p=0.02); presentation of superficial lymphatic thrombosis in the arm ipsilateral to the surgery (p<0.01); local application of radiotherapy, use of chemotherapy (p<0.01 for both); removal of the cuticles of the ipsilateral hand with pliers, and weightlifting after the treatment (p<0.01 and p=0.05, respectively). conclusions: the association between lymphedema and the mentioned factors requires an interdisciplinary approach to this condition. it is of paramount importance that health teams and patients become aware of the prevention and treatment of lymphedema, a condition often undervalued.

Abstract:

Tibolone, a synthetic steroid, is used in the treatment of natural or surgical menopause disturbs resultant of estrogenic deficiency. Isotibolone (Δ4-tibolone) is one of the three active metabolic degradation products of tibolone that displays progestagenic effects on carcinoma cell growth and gene regulation. Isotibolone can be present in raw material of tibolone due to some inadequate synthesis or storage. Its presence is necessary to be identified and quantified in active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), before its use in the manufacturing of medicines. After a recent study on the crystal structure determination of isotibolone, quantitative phase analyses of both tibolone and isotibolone in raw materials and tablets became possible to be conducted. X-ray powder diffraction is one recommended tool for this purpose, but it can be highly frustrating due to the extreme peak overlap when conventional laboratory equipments are used. In this work we show that the use of Brazilian Synchrotron Light Source X-ray powder diffraction data and the Rietveld method can be successfully applied to identify and quantify the isotibolone in two samples of tibolone raw materials.

Abstract: sugarcane juice is a very well-known and popular beverage in brazil, and provided it is properly exploited, it has a high market potential. the aim of this research was to evaluate the physicochemical, microbiological and sensory stability of pure sugarcane juice and mixed with fresh lemon and pineapple juice, subjected to a heat treatment (70 °c/25 min) and/or gamma radiation (2.5 kgy) and stored in high density polyethylene bottles. the data were evaluated by variance analysis and their mean values compared by tukey's test. processing of the sugarcane juice reduced the microorganism load without significantly altering the physicochemical composition, aroma and flavor of the beverages in comparison with the control. luminosity was higher in the product subjected to the heat treatment combined with gamma radiation than that resulting from the other treatments. the polyphenol oxidase activity in the processed beverages was significantly lower than in the control. the addition of fruit juice to the sugarcane juice did not modify the latter's physicochemical composition. however, the addition of 10% pineapple juice to the sugarcane juice increased the manganese and reduced sugars content when compared with pure sugarcane juice and with sugarcane juice mixed with 4% lemon juice.
